Chapter 7 - The Dead Woman ReturnsNobody moved.

Grace stood in the doorway.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Ethan stared at her as if looking at a ghost.
“Mom?”
Grace’s eyes filled with tears.
“My son.”
Ethan rushed toward her.
Then stopped.
Something about the moment felt wrong.
Too easy.
Too convenient.
He looked at Madison.
“Explain.”
Madison lowered the gun.
Grace entered the room.
“I was never dead.”
Ethan’s voice shook.
“Fifteen years.”
“I had to disappear.”
“Why?”
Grace looked at Clara.
“Because I was betrayed.”
Clara stood frozen.
Grace approached her.
“You did well.”
Clara started crying.
“I couldn't protect her forever.”
Grace looked toward Lily.
“I know.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“You knew Clara?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lily?”
Grace nodded.
“She was mine to protect.”
Ethan’s mind raced.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
“Because your father wanted me dead.”
“Why?”
Grace looked toward the window.
“Because he knew I had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“Everything.”
She handed Ethan a small memory drive.
“Your father built a private network.”
Ethan took it.
“He controlled people inside Whitmore Systems.”
“More than that.”
Grace's voice trembled.
“He controlled judges. Police officers. Politicians. Bankers.”
Ethan stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Grace looked at Madison.
“Tell him.”
Madison remained silent.
Grace turned back to Ethan.
“Madison wasn't the architect.”
Ethan’s heart sank.
“Then who?”
Grace whispered:
“Your father.”
A cold silence filled the room.
“My father died nine years ago.”
Grace nodded.
“And he has continued running everything from the shadows.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Grace looked directly into his eyes.
“Your father faked his death.”
The door behind them slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
The clinic security alarm began screaming.
Thomas ran to the hallway.
“Someone locked the building down.”
Madison looked at Grace.
“You promised.”
Grace answered coldly.
“I promised I would bring Ethan the truth.”
“You said you would not expose me.”
“You stopped being worth protecting when you hurt Clara.”
Madison’s face hardened.
Ethan stared at her.
“You knew all of this.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you come to me?”
Madison’s voice cracked.
“Because I wanted protection.”
“From my father?”
She nodded.
“He threatened my family.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“So you ruined my life to save yours?”
“I had no choice.”
“There is always a choice.”
A loud explosion came from the lobby.
The building shook.
Thomas ran back.
“We need to leave.”
Ethan grabbed Clara’s hand.
“Take Lily.”
They began moving.
Suddenly, Grace grabbed Ethan’s arm.
“Wait.”
“What?”
She whispered:
“There is one thing you still don't know.”
“What?”
Grace looked at Lily.
“Your father didn't want her dead.”
Ethan frowned.
“Then what?”
Grace’s expression became terrified.
“He wanted to use her.”
“For what?”
Grace leaned closer.
“Because Lily carries something that belongs to Whitmore Systems.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
May you like
Grace whispered:
“The original ownership key.”
