Chapter 14 - The Last Recording“Grandpa?”

Ethan's voice was barely audible.
Lily nodded.
“The man who came to Mommy's room.”
Clara froze.
“Lily, you never told me.”
“He told me not to.”
“Who?”
“Grandpa Robert.”
Ethan stared.
“But Robert is your…”
Lily shook her head.
“Not Grandpa Robert.”
Silence.
Then Grace covered her mouth.
“Alexander.”
Lily nodded.
“He taught me the game.”
Ethan turned toward Madison.
Madison looked horrified.
“Alexander used Lily.”
“Yes.”
“And the trust?”
“He needed her to activate it.”
Ethan looked at the screen.
The transfer process was still running.
Madison suddenly grabbed the keyboard.
“Can you stop it?”
“I don't know.”
“Try.”
They searched through the system.
Then Lily pointed at the screen.
“There.”
A tiny red symbol appeared in the corner.
“What is that?”
“The butterfly.”
Ethan frowned.
“What butterfly?”
“The one in the game.”
He remembered.
Red.
Blue.
Seven.
Three.
The sequence wasn't the password.
It was the override.
Ethan entered it.
The transfer stopped.
The system flashed.
TRANSFER FAILED.
Madison stared.
“We did it.”
Then the mansion doors exploded open.
Police flooded inside.
Ethan raised his gun.
An officer shouted:
“Drop your weapons!”
“What?”
“Ethan Whitmore, you are under arrest.”
Madison stared.
“For what?”
“Fraud.”
Ethan's face went pale.
“This is a setup.”
The officer held up a tablet.
“You transferred billions to offshore accounts.”
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
The documents showed Ethan's digital signature.
Perfectly forged.
Then another accusation.
Murder.
Clara looked horrified.
“What murder?”
The officer showed a photograph.
A dead man.
Victor Vale.
Timestamped two days earlier.
Ethan stared.
“But he was alive.”
Madison shook her head.
“This isn't possible.”
Then the officer added:
“And your fingerprints were found at the scene.”
Ethan looked toward Robert's old files.
Someone had planned everything.
Robert.
Alexander.
Or both.
He turned to Grace.
“Where is Robert?”
Gone.
Where was Alexander?
Gone.
Where was Clara?
Still here.
Where was Lily?
Still holding his hand.
The little girl looked up.
“He wants you arrested.”
Ethan knelt.
“Who?”
Lily answered:
“Grandpa.”
Then she pointed toward the mansion window.
A black car disappeared into the rain.
Ethan recognized the driver.
Robert.
He wasn't running.
He was watching.
And he was smiling.
Because everything had gone exactly according to plan.
Except one thing.
Lily.
The little girl suddenly opened her fist.
Inside was a tiny USB drive.
Ethan stared.
“Where did you get that?”
“Grandpa gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Before Mommy got hurt.”
Ethan plugged it into the system.
One file appeared.
FINAL TRUTH.
He opened it.
Robert appeared on screen.
But this time he looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not smiling.
“Ethan,” he said.
“If you're watching this, then you have survived.”
He paused.
“There is one truth I never told anyone.”
Ethan leaned closer.
Robert whispered:
“Your mother didn't disappear because of me.”
Grace's face turned pale.
“She disappeared because she discovered that Lily was not the only child.”
Ethan froze.
Robert continued.
“There is another Whitmore heir.”
A photograph appeared.
A baby.
Then a name.
EMMA WHITMORE.
Ethan stared.
“Who is Emma?”
Robert smiled.
“Your daughter.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
“I never had a daughter.”
Robert's voice became almost a whisper.
“You did.”
The recording ended.
Then the screen flashed one final sentence.
SHE IS STILL ALIVE.
Ethan looked at Clara.
Clara looked terrified.
“Why are you looking at me?”
Ethan's heart pounded.
Because suddenly he remembered something.
Five years ago, Clara had arrived at the mansion with Lily.
But she had never explained why Lily was the only child she brought with her.
And now there was another name.
Emma.
Another child.
Another heir.
Another secret.
Before Ethan could speak, Clara whispered:
“Ethan…”
May you like
She began crying.
“I never told you because I thought she was dead.”
