Chapter 8: The Devil Behind the Curtain

The wind swept across the Malibu cliffs, carrying the scent of salt and rain.
No one spoke.
Victor Hale stared at the elderly man as though he had seen a ghost.
Arthur Blackwood smiled faintly.
"I suppose that's an appropriate expression."
Caroline looked from one man to the other.
"Someone tell me what's happening."
Victor's voice was barely audible.
"Arthur Blackwood founded Mercer Biotech."
Caroline frowned.
"No."
"My father founded Mercer Biotech."
Arthur shook his head.
"That's what history says."
"It isn't what happened."
Twenty-eight years earlier...
Mercer Biotech had not yet existed.
Douglas Mercer was a brilliant young biochemist.
Arthur Blackwood was already a legendary pharmaceutical investor.
The two men shared an ambitious dream.
Revolutionize medicine.
Save millions of lives.
Become the future of American biotechnology.
Arthur supplied the money.
Douglas supplied the science.
Together, they built the company from a rented laboratory in San Diego.
For years, everything worked.
Until the investors demanded impossible profits.
Arthur wanted faster growth.
Douglas wanted safer research.
Their partnership slowly collapsed.
One rainy evening, Arthur offered Douglas a choice.
"Sign the expansion proposal."
Douglas looked at the documents.
Human trials in countries with almost no oversight.
Unregistered laboratories.
Offshore shell companies.
He pushed the papers back.
"I won't build an empire on dead children."
Arthur's expression never changed.
"Then someone else will."
That night...
Douglas bought Arthur's shares using emergency financing.
Public records showed Arthur Blackwood had retired.
Five years later...
He officially died during a private yacht accident in the Pacific.
Except...
He hadn't.
He had disappeared.
Waiting.
Watching.
Building something far larger.
Present Day
Caroline struggled to process everything.
"You faked your death?"
Arthur nodded.
"It was... convenient."
"Why reveal yourself now?"
"Because the people responsible have nearly destroyed each other."
Victor interrupted.
"You expect us to believe you're helping?"
Arthur chuckled softly.
"No."
"I expect you to believe I dislike unfinished business."
He looked directly at Caroline.
"The fire was never meant to kill you."
Silence.
Even the wind seemed to stop.
Caroline slowly stepped closer.
"What did you say?"
Arthur repeated calmly,
"You were never the target."
Across Los Angeles...
Juliette sat alone inside the Mercer Estate library.
Nathaniel hadn't returned home.
Douglas refused to answer her calls.
Victor had disappeared.
Every familiar certainty was crumbling.
She reached into her wedding gown bag and removed the antique brass key.
West Wing
Her hands trembled.
For years she had convinced herself memory could be rewritten.
That guilt eventually became silence.
Now...
The silence was speaking.
She unlocked an old cabinet hidden behind the library bookshelves.
Inside rested a small wooden box.
She had never shown it to anyone.
Slowly she opened it.
Inside lay dozens of burned objects.
A melted hair clip.
A scorched birthday card.
Half of Caroline's silver bracelet.
And beneath everything...
A folded sheet of paper.
Written in childish handwriting.
Best Sisters Forever
Two signatures.
Caroline.
Juliette.
A tear rolled silently down Juliette's cheek.
"I never wanted this..."
she whispered.
For the first time in ten years...
She wasn't speaking to anyone else.
She was speaking to herself.
Malibu Cliffs
Caroline's voice became sharp.
"If I wasn't the target..."
"...who was?"
Arthur looked toward the ocean.
"Douglas."
Victor narrowed his eyes.
"The company archives."
Arthur nodded.
"Exactly."
"The fire was meant to destroy evidence."
"What evidence?"
Arthur turned toward Victor.
"You've already seen part of it."
"The maintenance worker."
Victor immediately understood.
"He wasn't stealing files..."
Arthur finished the sentence.
"...he was retrieving them."
Caroline frowned.
"Then who started the fire?"
Arthur remained silent.
For several long moments...
Only crashing waves answered.
Finally he spoke.
"I hired someone."
Victor's hand instinctively moved toward the pistol beneath his jacket.
Arthur noticed.
"You may want to hear the rest before deciding whether to shoot me."
"I ordered my employee to enter the retirement estate."
"He was supposed to recover documents proving Mercer Biotech executives had created illegal offshore laboratories."
"He was never instructed to harm anyone."
"What happened instead..."
"...was chaos."
Arthur's voice carried something almost resembling regret.
"The electrical system failed earlier than expected."
"The fire spread too quickly."
"My man escaped."
"But someone else..."
"...used the confusion."
Caroline's heartbeat quickened.
"Juliette."
Arthur slowly shook his head.
"No."
Victor looked stunned.
"If not Juliette..."
Arthur met both of their eyes.
"Someone locked your bedroom after the fire had already started."
Neither Caroline nor Victor spoke.
Arthur continued.
"And according to my employee..."
"...the person wasn't your sister."
Mercer Estate
Nathaniel quietly entered the mansion.
The house felt unusually empty.
A housekeeper approached.
"Mrs. Ashford is in the library."
Nathaniel nodded.
As he walked past the grand staircase...
He heard quiet crying.
He stopped.
The sound came from behind the hidden library door.
Juliette.
He had never heard her cry before.
Carefully, he pushed the door open just enough to see inside.
Juliette sat on the floor.
The wooden memory box lay open beside her.
Nathaniel could see photographs.
Burned keepsakes.
And one sentence she whispered over and over.
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm sorry..."
Nathaniel closed the door without entering.
His confusion deepened.
Was this the grief of an innocent survivor?
Or the guilt of someone responsible?
He no longer knew.
Malibu
Arthur removed a weathered leather notebook from inside his coat.
"I've kept this for twelve years."
He handed it to Caroline.
She opened the first page.
It wasn't a diary.
It was a surveillance log.
Every movement inside the retirement estate had been recorded by Arthur's operative.
Time.
Location.
Observations.
Then...
One final entry.
11:42 PM
Smoke visible.
Girl identified as Caroline enters west bedroom.
11:45 PM
Young female identified as Juliette enters corridor.
Argument heard through closed door.
Caroline read faster.
The next line made her stop breathing.
11:47 PM
Unknown adult male arrives.
Young female flees corridor.
Adult male locks bedroom from outside.
Victor slowly looked up.
"Unknown adult male..."
Arthur nodded.
"My operative never saw his face."
"But he remembered one detail."
"What?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"He wore a Mercer Biotech executive access badge."
The realization struck all three of them at once.
If the notebook was genuine...
Then Juliette had not locked the door.
She had been there.
She had argued with Caroline.
She had run away.
But someone else had arrived afterward.
Someone with authority inside Mercer Biotech.
Someone who had turned a family tragedy into the perfect cover for another crime.
Far away, inside Mercer Biotech headquarters, a lone executive watched security footage from his private office.
His silver cufflinks reflected the city lights.
On his desk rested a framed newspaper from ten years earlier.
MERCER DAUGHTER DIES IN TRAGIC FIRE
He smiled.
Then quietly fed another confidential file into a paper shredder.
Some secrets had survived a decade.
May you like
He intended to make sure they did not survive another day.
