Chapter 14: The Shot in the Dark

The red laser vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
Richard Sloan froze.
Years of living behind layers of deception had sharpened one instinct above all others.
When danger became invisible...
Run.
Victor Cross saw the fear in Richard's eyes.
"Down!"
The crack of a high-powered rifle shattered the silence.
The bullet punched through the farmhouse window, spraying shattered glass across the wooden floor.
Richard threw himself behind an old pickup truck parked beside the porch.
Victor pulled a pistol from beneath his coat and dragged Senator Warren Ellison behind a stone wall.
Another shot.
Then another.
The sniper wasn't firing wildly.
Every round landed exactly where Richard had been a second earlier.
Someone wasn't trying to frighten him.
Someone had come to execute him.
Los Angeles
Victor Hale's encrypted phone vibrated.
One sentence appeared.
RICHARD IS UNDER ATTACK.
No sender.
No location.
Just the message.
Arthur looked over Victor's shoulder.
"Can you trace it?"
Victor shook his head.
"Military-grade encryption."
Caroline stepped closer.
"Who sent it?"
"I don't know."
"But whoever did..."
"...wants Richard alive."
Arthur grabbed his coat.
"We're leaving."
The Farmhouse
The gunfire stopped.
Silence returned.
Richard remained behind the truck, breathing heavily.
Victor Cross slowly looked toward the hills through a pair of binoculars.
"He's gone."
Richard shouted back,
"How do you know?"
Victor lowered the binoculars.
"Because professionals never fire more than necessary."
Ellison dusted off his suit.
"That wasn't one of mine."
Victor looked at him.
"I know."
Ellison frowned.
"You believe me?"
Victor's answer was immediate.
"If you wanted Richard dead..."
"...he would've died before hearing the first shot."
Richard slowly emerged from cover.
Blood stained his left sleeve.
A shallow wound.
Nothing fatal.
Then he noticed something beside the truck.
A black envelope.
It hadn't been there before.
He carefully opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
The Malibu Retirement Estate.
Taken moments before the fire.
On the back, five handwritten words:
You survived once. Not twice.
Richard's face turned pale.
Victor Cross quietly took the photograph.
"I know this handwriting."
Ellison looked up.
"So do I."
Mercer Estate
Nathaniel stood in Douglas Mercer's study.
The old billionaire poured two glasses of whiskey but touched neither.
"Tell me honestly," Douglas said.
"Do you still trust my daughter?"
Nathaniel took a long time to answer.
"I trust the woman she's becoming."
Douglas nodded slowly.
"And the woman she was?"
Nathaniel looked toward the rain outside.
"I think she spent ten years punishing herself for something she didn't fully understand."
Douglas closed his eyes.
"I failed both of them."
Nathaniel remained silent.
Douglas continued.
"I raised Caroline to believe kindness solved everything."
"I raised Juliette to believe perfection solved everything."
He laughed bitterly.
"I taught neither of them how to survive evil."
A knock interrupted them.
The housekeeper entered.
"Sir..."
"A package arrived."
"No return address."
Douglas accepted the package.
Inside lay a small digital voice recorder.
He pressed Play.
Static.
Then a woman's voice.
Estelle Mercer.
His late wife.
"Douglas...
If you're hearing this...
Then I failed."
His hands began trembling.
Nathaniel watched quietly.
"I know who started hunting our family."
"I know why Juliette's parents died."
"I know why Caroline was in danger."
Douglas's breathing stopped.
Nathaniel stared at the recorder.
Neither had expected Estelle to leave behind a message.
"But there's one thing neither Arthur..."
"...nor Richard..."
"...nor even Victor Cross knows."
A pause.
Then one sentence that changed everything.
"The person behind all of this..."
"...is already inside our family."
The recording ended abruptly.
Douglas looked up slowly.
"No..."
Nathaniel whispered,
"Someone in your family?"
Douglas answered quietly.
"There are only three of us left."
Him.
Juliette.
Caroline.
The Observatory
Lily couldn't sleep.
She quietly climbed out of bed and walked toward the kitchen for a glass of water.
As she passed the investigation room...
She noticed something strange.
One photograph had fallen from the wall.
She picked it up.
It was an old Mercer family Christmas picture.
Behind the frame...
A folded piece of paper had been hidden.
Lily unfolded it.
She couldn't understand most of the words.
But she recognized one name.
Juliette.
Caroline entered moments later.
"Lily?"
The little girl smiled.
"I found a secret note."
Caroline gently took the paper.
Her smile disappeared.
It wasn't a note.
It was part of Estelle Mercer's diary.
Apparently hidden behind the photograph years ago before someone else had acquired it.
The visible lines read:
"Juliette asked me today whether love could be inherited."
"I told her no."
"She cried for hours."
Then, lower on the page...
A final sentence.
"I fear someone has already begun teaching her to hate."
Caroline stared at the handwriting.
Not once in all these years had she considered one possibility.
What if Juliette hadn't become jealous on her own?
What if someone had carefully nurtured that jealousy from childhood?
The Farmhouse
Victor Cross folded the threatening photograph and slipped it into his pocket.
Richard sat on the porch steps, exhausted.
"Do you know who the sniper was?"
Victor answered honestly.
"No."
Ellison looked toward the dark hills.
"But I know one thing."
"What?"
Ellison's usually composed face had become unusually serious.
"The man who fired tonight..."
"...doesn't work for me."
Victor slowly turned.
"And that frightens you?"
Ellison nodded.
"For thirty years..."
"...I believed I knew every powerful person involved."
He looked into the darkness where the sniper had disappeared.
"I was wrong."
Far away, hidden among the pine trees overlooking the farmhouse, a lone figure packed away a precision rifle.
The face remained concealed beneath a hood.
Before leaving, the figure spoke into a satellite phone.
"The warning has been delivered."
A calm female voice replied,
"Good."
"And Richard Sloan?"
"He'll talk now."
The woman answered with quiet certainty.
"Exactly as planned."
The call ended.
The sniper disappeared into the forest, leaving behind only footprints that the coming rain would erase before sunrise.
For the first time, every player in the game understood the same terrifying truth.
There was still someone they had never seen.
Someone who had manipulated killers, executives, politicians, and billionaires alike from the shadows.
May you like
And that invisible hand had finally begun revealing itself.
