Chapter 13: The Senator's Offer

The old farmhouse fell silent as the black limousine came to a stop.

Victor Cross walked to the front porch without urgency.

Richard Sloan remained inside, watching through the window.

The rear door of the limousine opened.

A tall man stepped out.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His navy suit carried no insignia.

Only a small American flag pin rested on his lapel.

He looked less like a politician than a man accustomed to never being questioned.

Victor inclined his head.

"Good evening, Senator Warren Ellison."

Ellison smiled politely.

"You're getting old, Victor."

"So are you."

"But one of us can still afford better doctors."

Richard watched uneasily.

This wasn't the conversation of allies.

It sounded like two men who had survived each other for decades.

Mercer Estate

Nathaniel stood beside Juliette in the library.

The confession had changed everything.

He no longer believed she had murdered Caroline.

But he knew she had hidden the truth.

"There's something else," Nathaniel said quietly.

Juliette looked at him.

"The wedding wasn't chosen randomly."

"I know."

"No."

Nathaniel handed her a printed invitation.

She frowned.

It looked identical to every invitation sent to guests.

Until she noticed a tiny mark beneath the embossed Mercer crest.

A handwritten Roman numeral.

XIII

"What does that mean?"

Nathaniel answered,

"Only thirteen invitations had this mark."

"Those thirteen guests were all connected to Mercer Biotech twenty years ago."

Juliette's face slowly paled.

"The wedding wasn't just a celebration."

"It was a reunion."

The Farmhouse

Senator Ellison accepted a cup of coffee from Victor Cross.

"I assume they're moving faster than expected."

Victor nodded.

"Arthur revealed himself."

"Amelia too."

"And Caroline?"

"She's beginning to ask the right questions."

The Senator looked toward Richard.

"And you?"

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I made mistakes."

Ellison laughed softly.

"Mistakes?"

"You started a fire that became national history."

"You buried witnesses."

"You altered evidence."

"I'd call those accomplishments."

Richard remained silent.

He no longer admired the Senator.

Perhaps he never truly had.

The Observatory

Victor Hale spread dozens of photographs across a large table.

Caroline stood opposite him.

Arthur leaned against the wall.

Margaret poured coffee.

For the first time, everyone involved in the investigation occupied the same room.

Victor circled thirteen faces.

"These people attended the wedding."

He drew connecting lines.

"They also attended a Mercer Biotech retreat twenty years ago."

Another line.

"They all donated to Senator Warren Ellison's campaign."

Caroline frowned.

"A senator?"

Arthur quietly nodded.

"I warned Douglas years ago."

Victor looked up.

"You knew?"

Arthur sighed.

"I suspected."

"I never proved it."

He pointed to another photograph.

Twenty years earlier.

Mercer Biotech groundbreaking ceremony.

Douglas Mercer.

Richard Sloan.

Arthur Blackwood.

Several executives.

Standing in the center...

Senator Warren Ellison.

Smiling.

Holding ceremonial golden scissors.

Arthur spoke quietly.

"Nothing important happened inside Mercer Biotech..."

"...without Ellison knowing."

Mercer Biotech Headquarters

Douglas Mercer sat alone inside his office.

His secretary entered hurriedly.

"Sir."

"You have a visitor."

"I don't have appointments today."

"He says you owe him thirty years."

Douglas looked up.

The secretary stepped aside.

Senator Warren Ellison entered with the confidence of a man entering his own office.

Douglas slowly stood.

"I didn't invite you."

Ellison smiled.

"You never had to."

The secretary quietly closed the door behind them.

Ellison admired the skyline.

"Beautiful view."

Douglas remained standing.

"What do you want?"

The Senator turned.

"I came to save your family."

Douglas laughed bitterly.

"You're thirty years late."

Ellison ignored the remark.

"They're reopening the fire."

"I know."

"They're reopening Project Helix."

"I know."

"They're reopening Juliette's adoption."

Douglas stared.

"I know."

Ellison smiled.

"Excellent."

"Then you understand why everyone involved will lose."

Douglas folded his arms.

"What are you proposing?"

The Senator walked closer.

"A trade."

The Offer

"You tell Caroline to stop."

"You tell Arthur to disappear again."

"You convince Victor Hale to surrender every copy of his evidence."

Douglas narrowed his eyes.

"And if I refuse?"

Ellison answered without emotion.

"Lily dies."

The room became perfectly still.

Douglas's expression hardened.

"You would threaten a child?"

Ellison looked almost offended.

"I didn't."

"I merely explained what desperate people often do."

Douglas took one step forward.

"If anyone touches that little girl..."

Ellison interrupted.

"They already have."

He placed a small envelope on the desk.

Douglas opened it.

Inside were three photographs.

Lily leaving school.

Lily playing in a park.

Lily sleeping inside the observatory.

Every photograph had been taken within the last week.

Douglas slowly looked up.

His hands were shaking with anger.

"You monster."

Ellison smiled sadly.

"No."

"I'm simply the last man still trying to keep this country stable."

Elsewhere

Caroline tucked Lily into bed.

The little girl hugged her stuffed rabbit.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Will Aunt Julie come visit someday?"

Caroline paused.

"I don't know."

"I hope she does."

"Why?"

Lily smiled sleepily.

"Because everyone looks happier in the old pictures."

Caroline gently kissed her forehead.

"So did I."

After Lily fell asleep, Caroline quietly closed the bedroom door.

Margaret waited in the hallway.

"What is it?"

Caroline looked troubled.

"I've spent ten years trying to prove who destroyed my family."

"And?"

"I'm beginning to think..."

"...my family was only the first target."

The Farmhouse

Richard Sloan stepped outside alone.

The night air felt unusually cold.

He heard footsteps behind him.

Victor Cross joined him on the porch.

Richard spoke without looking at him.

"Did we ever have a choice?"

Victor answered honestly.

"No."

Richard gave a tired smile.

"I thought so."

He reached into his coat and removed a small flash drive.

"I made copies."

Victor turned slowly.

"Of what?"

"Everything."

"The original Project Helix archives."

Victor's calm expression finally cracked.

"You kept copies?"

"I kept insurance."

Richard looked toward the distant highway.

"If I disappear..."

"...give them to Caroline."

Victor stared at the flash drive for a long moment.

Then, for the first time in thirty years, he realized the game had slipped beyond his control.

Somewhere in the darkness beyond the farmhouse, the faint red dot of a sniper's laser settled briefly on Richard Sloan's chest...

...and then disappeared.

Someone else had arrived.

Someone who wasn't waiting for the truth.

May you like

Someone had come to erase the last witness before he could speak.
