Chapter 11: Amelia's Truth

The flashlight cut a narrow path through the darkness of the archive.

Dust drifted through the beam like ash suspended in time.

Douglas Mercer stared at the woman holding the pistol.

His voice cracked.

"Amelia..."

"I attended your funeral."

Amelia Brooks lowered the weapon, though she did not put it away.

"I know."

"It was easier that way."

Richard Sloan remained perfectly still.

Unlike Douglas, he showed no surprise.

Only resignation.

"So," Richard said quietly, "you finally decided to come out of hiding."

Amelia looked directly at him.

"I stopped hiding the day you started killing witnesses."

The words hung in the silent archive.

Douglas slowly turned toward Richard.

"Killing... witnesses?"

Richard didn't answer.

Fifteen Minutes Earlier

Amelia Brooks had entered Mercer Biotech through an underground maintenance tunnel built during the company's first headquarters expansion.

She knew every corridor.

Every blind spot.

Every forgotten entrance.

Because twenty-eight years earlier...

She had helped design the hospital security protocols that Douglas later adapted for his laboratories.

She wasn't breaking into Mercer Biotech.

She was walking through a building she had once helped create.

Hidden beneath her coat was the leather medical file she had protected for nearly three decades.

The last original copy.

If it survived...

Everything would change.

Present

Douglas struggled to steady his breathing.

"What truth?"

Amelia looked at him with deep sadness.

"You still believe Juliette's adoption was random."

Douglas frowned.

"It wasn't?"

"No."

She slowly placed the medical file on an old laboratory table.

"You chose Juliette."

"I arranged the paperwork."

"But neither of us knew..."

"...who was searching for her."

Richard closed his eyes.

"As I expected."

"You waited too long."

Douglas ignored him.

He carefully opened the file.

Inside were delivery records.

Adoption documents.

Medical reports.

Then...

A newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

LOCAL PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCHER AND WIFE KILLED IN SUSPICIOUS HOUSE FIRE

The article was dated...

Two days before Juliette's birth.

Douglas stared at it.

"No..."

Amelia nodded.

"Juliette's biological parents."

"They both died before she left the hospital."

Douglas whispered,

"They were scientists?"

"Yes."

"They worked for Blackwood Pharmaceuticals."

Douglas looked up sharply.

Arthur Blackwood.

Everything seemed to circle back to him.

Malibu Cliffs

Arthur Blackwood watched the ocean quietly.

Caroline stood beside him.

"You knew my sister's parents."

Arthur nodded.

"I employed them."

"Were they good people?"

"The best scientists I ever had."

"What happened?"

Arthur's face hardened.

"They discovered someone inside my company was stealing research."

"They intended to expose him."

"They never had the chance."

Caroline spoke the question forming in her mind.

"They were murdered."

Arthur answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

The Archive

Douglas slowly turned another page.

A laboratory photograph.

Two smiling researchers.

A newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the back was written:

Baby Juliette

His hands trembled.

He had never seen this photograph before.

He had spent twenty-five years believing Juliette had been abandoned.

Instead...

She had been orphaned.

Murdered parents.

Destroyed records.

Hidden identity.

He looked at Amelia.

"Who killed them?"

Amelia answered one word.

"Greed."

Richard gave a dry laugh.

"You always liked dramatic answers."

She looked at him coldly.

"No."

"I like accurate ones."

Victor Hale

Victor arrived outside Mercer Biotech just as emergency vehicles sped past him.

Not police.

Private security.

Too many.

Far too many.

His phone rang.

It was Caroline.

"I found Amelia."

Victor immediately accelerated.

"So did I."

"No."

Caroline's voice became urgent.

"She's at Mercer Biotech."

Victor's expression changed.

"I'm outside."

"Then don't go in."

"Why?"

Arthur's voice came onto the call.

"Because this isn't a conversation."

"It's an ambush."

Victor slammed on the brakes.

Almost instinctively, he looked toward the roof.

A faint red light.

A sniper's laser.

It swept across the front entrance before disappearing.

His pulse quickened.

Someone was waiting.

Not for him.

For whoever came out.

Inside the Archive

Richard finally spoke.

"You've all misunderstood the last ten years."

Douglas stared at him.

"Then explain."

Richard nodded.

"I will."

He took a slow breath.

"The fire was real."

"The illegal research was real."

"The stolen files were real."

"But none of them were my plan."

Douglas frowned.

"You're lying."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I covered it up."

"I profited from it."

"I buried evidence."

"But I didn't begin it."

Silence.

Amelia quietly said,

"I know."

Douglas looked between them.

"You know?"

Amelia nodded.

"Because I know who did."

Richard's face lost its color.

"No..."

She slowly spoke the name.

"Victor Cross."

The room fell silent.

Douglas searched his memory.

"I don't know anyone named Victor Cross."

"You shouldn't."

Amelia replied.

"That wasn't his real name."

Caroline

Arthur handed Caroline an old photograph.

A company retreat.

Dozens of Mercer Biotech employees.

Executives.

Scientists.

Engineers.

Caroline looked carefully.

"What am I looking for?"

Arthur pointed toward the back row.

A young man stood partially hidden behind Douglas and Richard.

Dark hair.

Confident smile.

Employee badge.

His name tag read:

Victor Cross

Arthur quietly said,

"Three months after this photograph..."

"...he disappeared."

Caroline looked closer.

Something about his face felt strangely familiar.

Not identical.

Just...

Similar.

Then realization struck.

She looked at Arthur.

"No..."

Arthur nodded slowly.

"You're seeing it too."

The man in the photograph bore an unmistakable resemblance...

...to Lily.

Mercer Biotech

Douglas whispered,

"Who was Victor Cross?"

Amelia answered softly,

"The man who murdered Juliette's parents."

"The man who stole Blackwood's research."

"The man who vanished after the fire."

She paused.

"And..."

"...Lily's grandfather."

Every person in the room froze.

Across the city, Caroline was still staring at the same photograph.

The resemblance she had noticed moments earlier suddenly became impossible to ignore.

If Amelia was right...

Then Lily wasn't simply caught in this story.

She was born from it.

And somewhere, after nearly thirty years in hiding...

The architect behind every tragedy might still be alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

Preparing for one final move.
