CHAPTER 13 The Son Daniel Abandoned

Nobody moved.
Adrian Voss stood at the entrance of the vault like someone who had been waiting years for this exact moment.
Not rushing.
Not angry.
Almost calm.
That was what frightened Corin most.
Anger was easy to understand.
Hatred was obvious.
But Adrian looked like someone who had carried the same wound for so long that the pain had become part of him.
Elena stood slowly.
“Adrian.”
Her voice broke.
The man looked at her.
For a second, his expression softened.
Then it disappeared.
“Don’t.”
One word.
A wall.
Elena stopped.
“I can explain.”
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Everyone always says that.”
His eyes moved toward Corin.
“Your father said it too.”
Corin felt his fists tighten.
“My father didn’t abandon you.”
Adrian looked at him.
The smile disappeared.
“You don’t know anything about him.”
Corin stepped forward.
“No.”
His voice was steady.
“I know he loved people.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
A flash of anger.
“You sound exactly like him.”
“Because he was my father.”
“And he was mine too.”
The words hit the room.
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the wound underneath everything.
Adrian was not just an enemy.
He was someone who believed he had been erased.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Adrian, whatever happened twenty years ago, killing Daniel and Amelia was not the answer.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Killing?”
A cold smile appeared.
“You still believe that story?”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Adrian walked into the vault.
“I did not kill Daniel Bellweather.”
Corin stared.
“Then who did?”
Adrian looked at Elena.
Then at the documents.
Then back at Corin.
“That is what I have been trying to find out.”
The answer shocked everyone.
“You’re saying you didn’t cause the accident?”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why were you working with Lorraine?”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Because Lorraine knew the same thing I knew.”
“What?”
“That someone else was controlling everything.”
The room became silent.
Again.
Another layer.
Another hidden door.
Corin felt exhausted.
Every answer seemed to open another mystery.
“Then why did you try to scare me?”
Adrian looked at him.
“I didn’t.”
“The messages.”
“I sent those.”
“Then how is that not trying to scare me?”
Adrian looked down.
“Because I needed you to stop trusting the wrong people.”
Corin’s eyes narrowed.
“You threatened Rory.”
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became sharper.
“I would never hurt a child.”
The certainty in his voice surprised everyone.
Even Corin.
Adrian continued:
“I know what it feels like to grow up without the truth.”
He looked at Rory’s sleeping photograph on Corin’s phone.
“I would never do that to another child.”
Elena moved closer.
“Adrian, you need to tell him everything.”
Adrian looked away.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because he will hate me.”
Corin answered:
“Try me.”
Adrian looked at him.
For a moment, he saw Daniel.
The same stubbornness.
The same refusal to walk away.
Finally, Adrian sighed.
“Twenty years ago, my mother discovered corruption inside Bellweather Holdings.”
Corin listened.
“She found that Victor Blackthorne’s family had been betrayed by your grandfather.”
Thomas nodded slowly.
“The original scandal.”
“Yes.”
Adrian continued.
“Your grandfather destroyed their company to expand Bellweather.”
He looked at Corin.
“Victor lost everything.”
“But Daniel didn’t do that.”
“No.”
Adrian’s voice softened.
“Daniel tried to fix it.”
He walked toward an old photograph.
“He found my mother.”
Elena looked down.
“He found me.”
Corin understood.
“Then why hide you?”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Because your grandfather threatened him.”
The room froze.
“Threatened him with what?”
Adrian looked at Corin.
“With me.”
A silence.
“Your grandfather told Daniel that if he acknowledged me publicly, Victor would use me as a weapon.”
Corin frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does when you understand my father.”
Adrian looked at him.
“He sacrificed his relationship with me to keep me alive.”
Corin felt something change.
Because that sounded exactly like Daniel.
A man who carried pain alone.
A man who believed protecting people meant pushing them away.
Adrian reached into his coat.
He removed a small envelope.
“I found this after Daniel died.”
He handed it to Corin.
The handwriting immediately made his heart stop.
His father’s.
Another letter.
Corin opened it.
Adrian,
If you are reading this, then I failed.
Not because I died.
But because I never found a way to explain why I left.
Corin read silently.
Adrian watched.
You deserved a father who could be there.
You deserved my name.
You deserved my protection.
But I made a choice.
I chose your life over my happiness.
Adrian looked away.
His eyes were wet.
Corin continued.
One day, you may hate me.
I understand.
But please remember this.
I never abandoned you.
I disappeared because I loved you.
The letter shook in Corin’s hands.
For the first time, he saw the same pain in Adrian that he saw in himself.
Two sons.
Both hurt by the same man.
Both believing they had been forgotten.
Then Thomas suddenly looked at the documents on the table.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
Thomas grabbed the original records.
“Adrian, when did you find out about Victor?”
“Years ago.”
“No.”
Thomas looked shocked.
“This timeline is wrong.”
“What do you mean?”
Thomas pointed at the papers.
“The accident.”
He looked at Corin.
“Your parents died because they were close to exposing Victor.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
“But Victor was not controlling Lorraine.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
Thomas flipped through the documents.
“Lorraine was working with someone else.”
Everyone stared.
“Who?”
Thomas looked at the final page.
A bank transfer.
A hidden account.
A name.
The room went completely still.
Because the person receiving money from Lorraine was not Victor.
Not Adrian.
Not anyone they expected.
It was someone inside the court.
Someone who had access to the entire case.
Someone who had been protecting evidence.
Someone who had been guiding every step.
Thomas whispered:
“No…”
Judge Caskey looked at the document.
Her face turned pale.
“Impossible.”
Corin looked between them.
“Who?”
Thomas slowly turned the paper around.
The name was written clearly.
The person who had been secretly financing Lorraine’s plan.
The person who wanted Rory separated from Corin.
The person who had manipulated the custody battle.
Was:
Judge Miriam Caskey.
The room exploded.
“No.”
Miriam stepped back.
“That is not true.”
Thomas stared at the document.
“The account number matches.”
“I was investigating Lorraine!”
“Then explain this.”
Miriam looked at the paper.
For the first time…
She had no answer.
Corin stared at the woman he thought protected him.
The woman his parents trusted.
The woman who seemed like the only person who understood.
His voice was barely audible.
“Why?”
Miriam looked at him.
And the expression on her face was not guilt.
It was sadness.
“Because I was trying to stop something much bigger.”
Nobody understood.
Then she whispered:
“I was never working for Lorraine.”
A pause.
“I was working for your mother.”
Corin froze.
“What?”
Miriam looked at Elena.
Then Adrian.
Then Corin.
“Because Amelia Bellweather asked me to become the villain.”
The vault went silent.
And suddenly…
The person everyone suspected might be innocent.
May you like
And the person everyone trusted might have been hiding the biggest secret of all.
