CHAPTER 12 The Woman Who Disappeared

The security footage remained frozen.
Elena Voss.
The name that had existed only in old documents.
The woman who disappeared twenty years ago.
The woman connected to Daniel’s biggest secret.
The woman who was supposed to be hidden from the world.
Was standing inside the Bellweather family vault.
Alive.
And waiting.
Corin stared at the screen.
His mind struggled to catch up.
For weeks, everyone had been searching for ghosts.
A dead attorney.
A hidden enemy.
A missing child.
A forgotten betrayal.
But the person at the center of everything was not hiding anymore.
She wanted to be found.
Thomas immediately grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Corin looked at the screen.
“No.”
Thomas frowned.
“Corin, this person may be dangerous.”
“She came here.”
“Yes.”
“But she didn’t run.”
That made everyone pause.
Corin continued.
“She wanted us to see her.”
Judge Caskey looked at him carefully.
“That is true.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Then what do you want to do?”
Corin looked at the woman on the screen.
The woman his father had protected.
The woman who might know why his family was destroyed.
“I want answers.”
The family vault was located beneath the old Bellweather estate.
A place Corin had never entered.
His father had always called it “the room where history sleeps.”
At the time, Corin thought it was just another strange thing adults said.
Now he understood.
History was not sleeping.
It was waiting.
The group entered carefully.
Thomas first.
Then Judge Caskey.
Then Evelyn.
Corin followed.
He refused to stay behind.
Not anymore.
The vault was colder than he expected.
Rows of locked cabinets lined the walls.
Old documents.
Family records.
Photographs.
The entire Bellweather history hidden underground.
Then they saw her.
Elena Voss stood near the center of the room.
She looked older than the photographs.
Her hair had turned silver.
Her face carried years of pain.
But her eyes were familiar.
Too familiar.
Because Corin saw something there.
The same sadness his father had.
The same kindness his mother had.
Elena looked at him.
And tears immediately filled her eyes.
“You look like him.”
Corin stopped.
The words were not what he expected.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Just sadness.
“Like who?”
She smiled faintly.
“Daniel.”
The name felt strange coming from her.
Not because she said it.
Because she said it like someone who missed him.
Corin stepped forward.
“Are you the person who sent the messages?”
Elena looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because nobody else was going to tell you the truth.”
Corin’s voice hardened.
“Then tell me.”
Elena nodded.
“I owe you that.”
She looked around the vault.
“This room contains everything your family tried to hide.”
Thomas interrupted.
“Not everything.”
Elena looked at him.
A small smile appeared.
“Thomas Hayes.”
Thomas froze.
“You know me?”
“I knew your father.”
The room became silent.
Elena continued.
“Your father was one of the only people who believed me.”
Thomas stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“He tried to expose Victor Blackthorne.”
Thomas’s expression changed.
“And he died because of it.”
Elena did not answer.
She did not need to.
Corin looked at Elena.
“You knew my father.”
“Yes.”
“Were you together?”
The question was difficult.
Everyone knew it.
Elena looked away.
“For a short time.”
Corin swallowed.
“Then you had a child.”
Her eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Elena looked at him.
The answer came quietly.
“Me.”
Nobody understood.
“What?”
Elena looked at Corin.
“The child was not my child.”
A pause.
“The child was Daniel’s.”
Corin felt confused.
“But you said…”
Elena took a deep breath.
“My son.”
The room went silent.
Corin understood.
The missing child.
Daniel’s first child.
The person everyone had been searching for.
Was not a stranger.
It was someone connected to Elena.
“Where is he?”
Elena looked away.
“He is closer than you think.”
A cold feeling entered the room.
Corin looked at Thomas.
Then Evelyn.
“Who?”
Elena did not answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward an old cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside was a file.
The cover contained a name.
ADRIAN VOSS.
Corin read it.
“Voss?”
Elena nodded.
“My son took my last name.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel wanted him protected.”
“Protected from who?”
Elena looked directly at him.
“From Victor Blackthorne.”
Thomas opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
A young man.
Around twenty years old.
Dark hair.
Sharp features.
Corin stared.
He looked nothing like him.
But there was something unsettling.
The eyes.
The expression.
A familiar sadness.
Thomas turned the page.
The documents showed Adrian’s entire history.
Private schools.
Different identities.
Hidden locations.
Always moving.
Always protected.
Then Corin saw the final page.
A recent photograph.
Taken two months ago.
The man standing beside Lorraine.
Corin recognized him.
The person in the background of the old photograph.
The person controlling everything.
Adrian Voss.
“No.”
Evelyn whispered.
“What?”
She pointed at the picture.
“I’ve seen him.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Where?”
Evelyn’s face became pale.
“He was at the funeral.”
Corin froze.
“What?”
“The man standing near the entrance.”
She covered her mouth.
“I thought he was just another guest.”
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“He was watching.”
The truth became clearer.
Adrian had been there.
When the family collapsed.
When Corin lost his parents.
When Lorraine started her plan.
He had watched everything.
Elena sat down.
“I tried to stop him.”
Corin looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You knew he was involved?”
She closed her eyes.
“I knew he was angry.”
“How angry?”
Elena looked at him.
“Angry enough to believe destroying the Bellweather family would finally make things right.”
Corin felt his chest tighten.
“Why?”
Elena looked around the vault.
“Because Adrian believed Daniel abandoned him.”
“But my father protected him.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would he hate him?”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Adrian never knew the whole truth.”
“What truth?”
Elena whispered:
“Daniel did not abandon him.”
A pause.
“Daniel chose to disappear from his life because Victor threatened to kill him.”
Corin looked shocked.
“He never knew?”
“No.”
“Why didn’t Daniel tell him?”
Elena looked at him.
“Because Victor made Daniel choose.”
The room went silent.
“What choice?”
Elena answered:
“His son…”
She paused.
“Or his entire family.”
Suddenly, the vault lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
A sound came from the entrance.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone was walking toward them.
Elena’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“No.”
Corin looked at her.
“What?”
She whispered:
“He followed me.”
The footsteps stopped.
A man appeared in the doorway.
Tall.
Calm.
Wearing a dark coat.
His eyes moved through the room.
First to Elena.
Then Thomas.
Then Judge Caskey.
Finally…
To Corin.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the man smiled.
Not warmly.
Sadly.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
Corin stared.
“Adrian?”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
The son Daniel never spoke about.
The person behind Lorraine.
The person everyone had been searching for.
Adrian Voss stepped into the vault.
And said:
May you like
“Now you finally know why your father deserved to lose everything.”
