CHAPTER 11 The Promise Daniel Broke

The warehouse became completely silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence where everyone was afraid that even breathing too loudly might disturb the truth waiting in front of them.

The voice from the recorder remained frozen in their minds.

“Daniel. You promised you would never tell Corin.”

Not Amelia.

Not Lorraine.

Someone else.

A woman they had never heard before.

Thomas immediately picked up the recorder.

“Impossible.”

Corin looked at him.

“What?”

Thomas turned the device over.

“This recorder was not supposed to activate.”

“Why?”

“Because this is not a normal recording.”

He opened the back panel.

Inside was a small mechanism.

“A delayed trigger.”

Judge Caskey frowned.

“Meaning?”

Thomas looked at everyone.

“Someone programmed it to play only after a specific event.”

Corin understood.

“After my parents died?”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

The realization made his stomach turn.

His father had known.

He had prepared messages.

Files.

Hidden rooms.

Even this.

Daniel Bellweather had built a trail leading his son toward the truth.

But why?

What was he afraid Corin would discover?

The recorder played again.

The woman’s voice returned.

“Daniel, you don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Daniel answered.

His voice sounded younger.

Angrier.

“I understand exactly.”

“You think telling him will protect him?”

“Yes.”

“It will destroy him.”

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“He deserves to know.”

The woman became emotional.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“He deserves a childhood.”

Corin felt his chest tighten.

Because that sounded like something his mother would say.

Someone protecting a child.

Someone afraid of hurting him.

Daniel replied:

“I cannot keep lying to my son.”

The woman whispered:

“But you already did.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then Corin spoke.

“Who is she?”

No one answered.

He looked at Thomas.

“You know, don’t you?”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“You recognized the voice.”

“I recognized the situation.”

Corin stared.

“Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Don’t give me another half-answer.”

Thomas looked away.

And that was enough.

Corin stepped closer.

“You know something.”

Thomas remained silent.

“Thomas.”

The lawyer finally sighed.

“I know there was someone else involved in Daniel’s past.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know her name.”

“Then what do you know?”

Thomas looked at the recorder.

“Your father had a secret.”

Corin’s jaw tightened.

“Another one.”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

Thomas hesitated.

Then said:

“A child.”

The room froze.

For several seconds, nobody understood.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“What?”

Thomas looked at Corin.

“Before Daniel married Amelia…”

He paused.

“He had another relationship.”

Corin stared.

“No.”

Thomas continued carefully.

“There was a woman.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

“And the child?”

Thomas looked down.

“The child was hidden.”

Corin felt dizzy.

A secret child.

His father.

A whole part of his life he never knew existed.

“How old?”

Thomas looked at the documents.

“Approximately twenty years old.”

Corin did the math.

His mind stopped.

Twenty years old.

An adult.

Someone who had existed before him.

Someone who knew Daniel.

Someone who might have a reason to hate him.

A cold thought entered his mind.

“The person behind this…”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Could be that child.”

Back at the Bellweather house, the investigation changed completely.

The focus was no longer Lorraine.

It was the missing person.

Daniel’s first child.

They searched every record.

Every document.

Every old connection.

Then Judge Caskey found something.

A birth certificate.

Hidden.

Modified.

Almost erased.

The name of the father:

Daniel Bellweather.

The mother:

Elena Voss.

Corin stared at the name.

“Who was she?”

Thomas answered quietly.

“Someone your grandfather tried to hide.”

“Why?”

“Because she was connected to the original Bellweather family scandal.”

Corin looked confused.

“How?”

Thomas opened another file.

Inside was a newspaper article.

A young woman.

Elena Voss.

A talented accountant.

Someone who discovered financial crimes inside Bellweather Holdings.

Someone who disappeared after accusing the company of corruption.

Corin looked at the date.

Twenty years ago.

The same time period as Daniel’s mistake.

Then another document appeared.

A private settlement.

Signed by:

Daniel Bellweather.

And Elena Voss.

The agreement had one condition.

The child must never be connected to the Bellweather name.

Corin looked up.

“My father erased his own child?”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“He protected the child.”

“From what?”

Thomas looked at the document.

“From the same people who are attacking you now.”

That night, Corin could not sleep.

He sat beside Rory’s bed.

Watching him.

Thinking about everything.

His father.

His mother.

Lorraine.

The hidden child.

The accident.

Every answer created another question.

Rory suddenly opened his eyes.

“Corin?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you sad?”

The question surprised him.

“Why?”

“Because you look like when Mom was sad.”

Corin looked down.

“What do you mean?”

Rory rubbed his eyes.

“When Mom was sad, she smiled a lot.”

The words hit him.

Because children noticed things adults ignored.

“Did Mom ever talk about Dad being afraid?”

Rory thought.

Then nodded.

“Once.”

Corin leaned closer.

“When?”

“Before they went away.”

Corin froze.

“What did she say?”

Rory looked at him.

“She told Dad…”

The boy tried to remember.

“She said…”

His voice became quieter.

“‘You can’t save everyone by sacrificing yourself.’”

Corin stopped breathing.

Because that sentence connected everything.

His father had made a choice.

A choice he believed was necessary.

A choice someone hated him for.

The next morning, Evelyn found something hidden in Amelia’s old belongings.

A diary.

Not a normal diary.

A small black notebook.

Only a few pages were written.

The first page had a title:

THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL

Corin opened it.

The first sentence destroyed everything he thought he knew.

Daniel did betray someone.

But he did it because he was trying to save me.

Corin continued reading.

Twenty years ago, Daniel discovered that Victor Blackthorne was planning to destroy the Bellweather family.

Victor did not want money.

He wanted revenge.

Because Daniel’s father destroyed his family.

Corin looked at Thomas.

“Victor Blackthorne.”

Thomas nodded.

“The man behind Lorraine.”

The diary continued.

Daniel made a deal.

He would give up his position in the company.

He would hide Elena and her child.

He would carry the blame.

In exchange, Victor promised he would leave the family alone.

Corin’s hands shook.

His father was not the villain.

He was the shield.

But then he read the next line.

And everything changed again.

Daniel broke the deal.

Because he discovered Victor never intended to stop.

And when Daniel tried to expose him…

Victor came after our children.

The final page contained only one sentence.

Written differently.

As if Amelia had written it in a hurry.

Corin, if you find this, remember one thing:

The person you should fear is not the one who hates your father.

It is the one who loves him.

Corin stared.

“What does that mean?”

Then the house alarm suddenly activated.

Everyone jumped.

A security notification appeared on Evelyn’s phone.

Someone had entered the Bellweather family vault.

The place where all original company records were stored.

Thomas checked the camera footage.

A person stood inside.

A woman.

She turned toward the camera.

Her face was visible.

Corin felt the world stop.

Because he knew her.

Everyone knew her.

She was not a stranger.

She was not dead.

She was not hidden.

She had been watching them the entire time.

The woman smiled at the camera.

Then she whispered:

“Corin…”

A pause.

“You finally found me.”

The name appeared on the screen.

May you like

ELENA VOSS.
