Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE HIDDEN ROOMShe Had Been Alive the Entire TimeThey carried her into the medical suite.

Her pulse was weak but steady.

Noah sat outside the door.

Anna stood beside him.

Neither child spoke.

Sylvester stood over the woman.

The woman who had supposedly been dead for eleven years.

Doctors arrived.

The examination revealed multiple old injuries.

A scar along her shoulder.

A healed fracture.

Surgical marks.

Signs she had spent years receiving medical treatment under a false identity.

When she woke, the first person she asked for was Noah.

"He's here."

She smiled weakly.

Noah entered.

She reached for him.

He hesitated.

Then stepped into her arms.

For the first time in years, the boy cried.

Sylvester watched from the doorway.

His wife whispered:

"I'm sorry."

Noah's face pressed against her shoulder.

"You were dead."

"I wanted to come home."

"Why didn't you?"

She looked toward Sylvester.

"Because someone made sure I couldn't."

"Who?"

She closed her eyes.

"Victor."

Sylvester's jaw tightened.

"Tell me everything."

She took a slow breath.

"Eleven years ago, I discovered that the family trust had been redirected through offshore accounts."

She explained that several people had been siphoning money from companies connected to the trust.

Victor Kane coordinated the network.

Evelyn had helped maintain the legal structures.

But there was something worse.

The stolen money wasn't the true objective.

The money funded private operations.

Surveillance.

Identity changes.

Bribery.

Witness disappearances.

And medical experiments.

"What kind of experiments?"

She looked at Sylvester.

"Memory conditioning."

Silence.

"They were trying to create people who could be trained to carry false identities without questioning them."

Anna stiffened.

"That's what they did to me."

Her mother nodded.

"Yes."

Sylvester stared at Anna.

"How?"

"They would move you every few months. Change your name. Change the school. Tell you your memories were wrong."

Anna's hands trembled.

"They told me I had never had a brother."

Her mother looked at Noah.

"They wanted to erase the connection between you."

"Why?"

"Because twins share the same inheritance rights."

Sylvester frowned.

"That still doesn't explain why they'd go this far."

His wife looked at him.

"It does when you know what the trust actually controls."

She reached beneath her blanket and removed a tiny key.

It looked almost identical to the key recovered from the assassin.

"This opens the original trust vault."

Sylvester took it.

"Where?"

"My father built it beneath the old lake house."

Sylvester froze.

"The place where we used to spend summers?"

"Yes."

"That's where Victor wants us."

"No."

Her voice became urgent.

"Victor doesn't want the vault opened."

"Then what does he want?"

She looked at Noah and Anna.

"He wants the twins."

"Alive?"

"For now."

The room fell silent.

She continued.

"The vault contains evidence."

"What evidence?"

"Names."

"Whose names?"

She looked directly at Sylvester.

"Judges. Doctors. bankers. politicians. Security contractors. People who believed they were untouchable."

Sylvester's expression darkened.

"Then we go to the police."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because some of them work for the people inside the file."

Before Sylvester could respond, every phone in the mansion began ringing at once.

One guard answered.

His face changed.

"Sir."

"What?"

"The police have arrived."

Sylvester looked toward the windows.

Dozens of vehicles surrounded the property.

Lights flashed.

But the guard was still speaking.

"They aren't local police."

"Who are they?"

The guard swallowed.

"They're federal agents."

Sylvester stepped toward the door.

Then every agent outside raised weapons.

Not at the mansion.

At the guards.

A voice came through the loudspeaker.

"Sylvester Stallone, step away from the children."

His wife whispered:

"That's not the government."

"How do you know?"

"Because I recognize the man giving the order."

Sylvester looked toward the entrance.

A familiar figure stepped out from the vehicles.

Victor Kane.

He held an official-looking badge.

"Mr. Stallone," he announced, "we are here to arrest you for kidnapping two children."

Sylvester looked at his wife.

Then at Noah and Anna.

May you like

Victor smiled.

"And we have a warrant."
