Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO DIEDThe Grave That Held NobodyMidnight was less than three hours away.

Sylvester refused to leave the mansion.

He sealed every entrance.

Called federal investigators.

Called his private security team.

And locked Evelyn inside the library under guard.

But the photograph kept bothering him.

The picture had been taken from inside the house.

Which meant someone was still there.

Noah and Anna were hidden in a reinforced room behind the wine cellar.

Sylvester sat across from them.

"So you two never knew each other?"

Anna shook her head.

"No."

"What did they tell you about your family?"

Anna stared at the floor.

"That my mother was dangerous."

Noah frowned.

"They told me my father didn't love me."

Anna looked at him.

"They told me my brother didn't exist."

Both children fell silent.

Sylvester closed his eyes.

A lifetime of lies had been built between two children who had never done anything wrong.

He asked Anna about her childhood.

She described different houses.

Different schools.

Different names.

Always supervised.

Always watched.

Whenever she asked about her mother, the adults gave her the same answer.

"She abandoned you."

Sylvester's voice lowered.

"Who raised you?"

Anna hesitated.

"A man named Thomas."

"Last name?"

"I never knew."

"Where is he now?"

Anna looked terrified.

"Dead."

Sylvester immediately noticed the pattern.

Everyone connected to the truth was dead.

He left the room and ordered a background search.

Then he called a private investigator.

"Find everything on Thomas. Don't use the usual databases."

Ten minutes later, the investigator called.

"There is no Thomas attached to Anna's records."

"Search financials."

Silence.

Then:

"Sir, we found something."

"What?"

"Payments were being made through a shell charity."

"Name?"

"The Rose Foundation."

Sylvester went still.

The Rose Foundation had been created by Evelyn eleven years earlier.

He had signed the paperwork without reading it.

Another piece clicked into place.

He returned to the library.

Evelyn was sitting quietly.

"You created the Rose Foundation."

She looked at him.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To protect children."

"From what?"

"From men like you."

Sylvester stared.

"You've had eleven years to tell me the truth."

"I was protecting Anna."

"Then why did you tell me she didn't exist?"

"Because if you knew, they'd kill both children."

"Who are they?"

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

"You still don't understand."

"Then explain."

She stood.

"The man you're looking for isn't outside this house."

Sylvester frowned.

"He is inside your family."

"Who?"

Evelyn looked at the ceiling.

Then toward a security camera.

"He's listening right now."

The lights flickered.

Every monitor switched on.

A man appeared on screen.

Mid-fifties.

Silver hair.

Calm smile.

Sylvester recognized him immediately.

His older brother's former attorney.

Victor Kane.

He had been a trusted family adviser for decades.

Victor leaned toward the camera.

"Good evening, Sylvester."

Sylvester stepped closer.

"You."

Victor smiled.

"You finally found the archive."

"What did you do to my children?"

Victor laughed softly.

"Your children?"

"Noah and Anna."

"You still think this is about them."

Victor lifted a file.

"Your wife discovered something eleven years ago."

"What?"

"The family trust."

Sylvester's expression changed.

Victor continued.

"The trust wasn't about money."

He placed a document against the camera.

"It contained controlling rights to several companies, properties, and private foundations."

"So?"

"So your wife wanted the trust divided equally between the twins."

Sylvester stared.

Victor smiled.

"Your family wanted everything."

"And you?"

"I wanted leverage."

Sylvester looked toward Evelyn.

"You worked with him."

She didn't deny it.

"I had no choice."

Victor continued.

"Your wife discovered what we were doing."

"Did you kill her?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"No."

He paused.

"She survived."

Sylvester's heart slammed.

"Where is she?"

Victor leaned back.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"Whether you bring the twins to the lake."

Sylvester slammed his fist into the monitor.

The screen shattered.

Noah came running.

"Dad!"

Sylvester turned.

Anna stood behind him.

"Where's Mom?"

Sylvester couldn't answer.

Because suddenly he heard footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming from the hallway.

A woman appeared.

White coat.

Dark hair.

Older than the woman in the photograph.

But unmistakably the same face.

Sylvester stopped breathing.

She looked at him.

"Hello, Sylvester."

His knees nearly gave way.

Noah whispered:

"Mom?"

The woman looked at the twins.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"I've been looking for you."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

The woman turned to her.

"You promised you'd keep them safe."

Evelyn whispered:

"I tried."

The woman shook her head.

"You protected the wrong person."

Sylvester stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

She looked at him with exhaustion.

May you like

"I'm the woman you buried."

And before anyone could respond, she collapsed.
