Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the EstateThe gunshot shattered the mansion's silence.

Nathan immediately pulled Isabella behind the piano.
Celeste crouched beside them.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
A guard's voice echoed through the corridor.
“Sir! We've been breached!”
Richard's voice answered.
“Lock the west gates!”
Nathan looked at Celeste.
“Who fired the shot?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why aren't you surprised?”
Celeste stared into the darkness.
“Because this isn't about the party anymore.”
She opened the hidden panel behind the piano.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
Isabella stared.
“There was a passage underneath the music room?”
“Every old family has secrets.”
Celeste looked at her.
“Ours just happens to have bodies.”
They descended.
The hidden tunnel smelled of earth and old stone.
Isabella's injured wrist throbbed.
After several minutes, they reached an iron door.
Celeste used the key from her necklace.
Inside was a small chamber.
At the center stood a wooden table.
On it were dozens of files.
Each had a name.
Politicians.
Businessmen.
Judges.
Police commissioners.
People who had attended the party.
People who feared the Vale family.
Isabella stared.
“What is this?”
“Leverage.”
Nathan picked up a file.
“This is blackmail.”
Celeste nodded.
“Father has spent decades collecting secrets.”
Isabella opened another.
Then another.
Every file contained evidence of something terrible.
Fraud.
Bribery.
Affairs.
Murder.
Her father's empire had never been built on business alone.
It had been built on fear.
And then Isabella noticed one file that was different.
No name.
Only a red symbol.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph of herself as a child.
Another photograph showed Helena carrying an infant.
A third showed Vivienne.
And beneath them was a handwritten note.
SUBJECT: GIRL MUST NEVER LEARN THE TRUTH.
Isabella felt sick.
“Why am I a subject?”
Celeste took the file.
“Because you're the heir.”
“I thought you were.”
“I was.”
She looked away.
“Until Father discovered you had something he couldn't control.”
“What?”
“Public legitimacy.”
Isabella frowned.
Celeste continued.
“Your biological records were altered. But old documents exist. If they become public, Father's entire inheritance structure collapses.”
Nathan understood.
“You're not fighting over the company.”
Celeste shook her head.
“We're fighting over who has the legal right to own it.”
Suddenly the iron door slammed shut.
Everyone froze.
Someone was on the other side.
Nathan rushed to it.
“Open!”
No response.
Then a voice came through.
Richard.
“You should have left this alone.”
Isabella stepped forward.
“Why did you lie about Mother?”
Silence.
Then Richard answered.
“Because the truth destroys families.”
“You destroyed ours.”
“I protected it.”
“You tried to kill me!”
A pause.
Then:
“I didn't.”
Isabella stared at the door.
“Celeste pushed me.”
Richard did not answer.
Celeste looked horrified.
“Father…”
His voice returned.
“She wasn't supposed to push you.”
Celeste's face went white.
Isabella slowly turned toward her.
“What did he mean?”
Celeste began to cry.
“Isabella…”
“What did he mean?”
Celeste whispered:
“I was supposed to scare you.”
“You were supposed to what?”
“I was told to make you leave the staircase.”
“And then?”
Celeste closed her eyes.
“Someone else was standing behind me.”
The chamber went silent.
Nathan whispered:
“Who?”
Celeste looked toward the darkness.
“I don't know.”
Then the lights in the chamber turned on.
A hidden monitor flickered to life.
Security footage appeared.
The staircase.
The party.
Isabella walking toward the steps.
Celeste approaching behind her.
Then, just before Celeste pushed her, another figure appeared at the top of the staircase.
A man.
Tall.
Wearing a black suit.
He watched.
He waited.
And when Celeste stepped forward—
he smiled.
Isabella leaned closer.
She knew that face.
Everyone in the chamber knew it.
Nathan whispered:
May you like
“That's impossible.”
Because the man on the screen had been dead for eleven years.
