Chapter 1 - The Gathering at the Grand EstateThe chandeliers of the grand estate cast a brilliant, glittering luminescence over the marble floors below, illuminating a gathering of society's most elite figures. Elegantly dressed guests milled about the spacious hall, laughing softly, clinking crystal glasses filled with champagne, and exchanging polished pleasantries.

Every detail of the evening had been meticulously planned to project perfection, power, and untouchable status.

Yet beneath that veneer, something was wrong.

It began with the whispers.

Two women leaned toward one another near the fireplace. A silver-haired businessman abruptly stopped laughing when Evelyn Vale entered the room. An elderly aunt who had spent years praising the family suddenly looked away when she saw the young woman in purple.

And at the center of it all stood twenty-four-year-old Isabella Vale.

She wore a delicate light-purple gown that softened her features and made her appear almost painfully innocent beneath the massive chandelier.

Tonight was supposed to be her engagement celebration.

Tonight was supposed to be the night the Vale family welcomed her officially into its inner circle.

Instead, Isabella felt as though every person in the ballroom was waiting for her to fail.

Her father, Richard Vale, stood at the far end of the room beside several powerful investors. The patriarch of the Vale dynasty was known throughout the city as a man who could destroy a competitor with a single phone call.

He rarely smiled.

Tonight, he had not smiled once.

His wife, Helena, looked elegant in emerald silk.

His eldest daughter, Celeste, stood beside her in a striking red dress.

Celeste was thirty, beautiful, brilliant, and notoriously ruthless.

Her eyes followed Isabella constantly.

Whenever their gazes met, Celeste smiled.

But there was nothing warm about the smile.

It was the expression of someone watching a door she intended to lock forever.

Isabella had spent years convincing herself that Celeste simply disliked her.

Tonight, she realized something far more frightening.

Celeste hated her.

Across the room, Isabella's fiancé, Nathaniel Cross, approached with a champagne flute in his hand.

“You look nervous.”

Isabella forced a smile.

“Do I?”

“Only to someone who knows you.”

Nathan leaned closer.

“Your father wants to speak with you.”

Isabella's stomach tightened.

“About what?”

Nathan hesitated.

“I don't know.”

He glanced toward Richard.

“But whatever it is, you should go.”

Isabella nodded.

She turned toward her father.

That was when Celeste stepped into her path.

“Isabella.”

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

“Celeste.”

Celeste looked her up and down.

“Beautiful dress.”

“Thank you.”

“I almost wore purple tonight.”

Isabella blinked.

“You did?”

Celeste smiled.

“But I thought it would be cruel.”

“What would?”

“Making everyone compare us.”

Before Isabella could respond, Celeste leaned closer.

“Enjoy the evening while you can.”

Then she stepped aside.

Isabella watched her disappear into the crowd.

A chill ran down her spine.

She tried to dismiss it.

Perhaps Celeste was simply being unpleasant.

Perhaps she was nervous about the engagement.

Perhaps—

A voice interrupted her thoughts.

“Miss Vale?”

It was Arthur, one of the family's oldest servants.

He appeared pale.

“The master asked that you bring the blue folder from the study.”

“The blue folder?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Arthur lowered his voice.

“He said it concerns your mother.”

Isabella froze.

Her mother had been dead for nine years.

“What about my mother?”

Arthur looked toward the balcony.

Then toward Celeste.

“I don't know.”

He swallowed.

“But I suggest you get the folder quickly.”

Isabella left the ballroom.

She walked toward the grand staircase.

The staircase curved dramatically upward, its white marble steps gleaming beneath the chandelier. The ornate handrail had been imported from Italy decades earlier.

At the bottom of the stairs, Isabella suddenly heard something.

A faint scrape.

She turned.

Nobody.

She continued upward.

Halfway to the landing, she felt a hand grip her shoulder.

She gasped and spun around.

Celeste stood behind her.

“Leaving already?”

“No. I'm going to the study.”

Celeste's eyes flickered toward the upper hall.

“You shouldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because some things are better left buried.”

Isabella stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Celeste's expression changed.

For one fleeting second, the mask disappeared.

There was raw fear in her eyes.

Then it vanished.

“You'll understand soon.”

Celeste stepped closer.

Isabella instinctively moved backward.

One step.

Then another.

Her heel landed dangerously close to the edge.

Celeste's hand tightened around her arm.

And suddenly Isabella saw something in her sister's face that she had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Decision.

Celeste shoved her.

Isabella screamed.

Her body twisted.

The world became a blur of white marble and flashing crystal.

Then—

CRASH!

Her shoulder struck the edge of the staircase.

Her head slammed against the railing.

Gasps exploded through the ballroom.

Someone screamed her name.

Isabella fell again.

Then everything went black.

But just before consciousness disappeared, she heard Celeste whisper something.

Something no one else seemed to hear.

“You were never supposed to find out.”

May you like

And at the top of the staircase, someone else quietly closed the door to the study.

The blue folder was gone.
