CHAPTER 8: THE BETRAYAL OF ADRIAN CROSS

The warehouse became a prison of silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because sometimes the most shocking betrayals were not the ones committed by enemies.

They were the ones committed by the people who knew exactly where your heart was buried.

Victor Blackwood stared at Adrian Cross.

The man standing across from him was not a stranger.

That was what made it worse.

Victor remembered being a child and hiding behind Adrian during thunderstorms.

He remembered Adrian teaching him how to hold a weapon.

How to negotiate.

How to survive.

When Victor’s father died, Adrian was the one who stayed.

When everyone else saw a young boy with a broken family, Adrian saw the future head of the Blackwood empire.

He had always been there.

Every victory.

Every loss.

Every moment.

And now he stood there holding a weapon.

“You.”

Victor’s voice was almost a whisper.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Victor looked at the gun in his hand.

Then back at his face.

“All these years…”

His voice became colder.

“All these years you stood beside me.”

Adrian did not deny it.

“Yes.”

“You watched me trust you.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“You watched me search for my father’s killer.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“I did.”

Victor laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

A sound filled with disbelief.

“And you let me search in the wrong direction.”

Adrian looked away.

“I tried to protect you.”

Victor’s eyes sharpened.

“Everyone says that.”

A pause.

“Everyone who destroys my life says they were protecting me.”

The words hit Adrian.

Because somewhere deep inside, he knew Victor was right.

Richard watched from above.

A cold smile appeared.

“This is the problem with the Blackwood family.”

Everyone looked at him.

Richard continued.

“You always believe loyalty means someone loves you.”

He walked slowly down the stairs.

“But sometimes loyalty is just a cage.”

Victor ignored him.

His eyes remained on Adrian.

“Tell me the truth.”

Adrian stayed silent.

Victor stepped closer.

“For once in your life, stop protecting me.”

The old man’s face tightened.

Then he finally spoke.

“The night your father died…”

The warehouse became still.

“I was there.”

Victor froze.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Lily looked shocked.

“You were there?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

Victor’s voice became dangerous.

“Then tell me what happened.”

Adrian looked at the ground.

“Your father discovered Richard was working with enemies of the family.”

Richard laughed.

“Working with enemies?”

Adrian looked at him.

“You sold information.”

Richard smiled.

“And your father wanted me dead because of it.”

Victor looked between them.

“So Richard killed my father?”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Adrian continued.

“Richard planned it.”

He looked toward his uncle.

“But he was not the one who pulled the trigger.”

The silence became unbearable.

Victor stared.

“Then who?”

Adrian looked at him.

And for the first time in fifteen years…

Victor saw real pain in Adrian’s eyes.

“Me.”

The word destroyed the room.

Lily covered her mouth.

Thomas looked stunned.

Victor did not move.

He simply stared.

“No.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I did not want to.”

Victor’s voice became louder.

“You killed my father?”

“I was ordered.”

“By who?”

Adrian looked at Richard.

Victor followed his gaze.

Richard smiled.

“I knew Adrian was useful.”

Victor looked back at Adrian.

“You chose him.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I chose survival.”

Victor stepped back.

The man who had taught him everything had just admitted he murdered the one person Victor loved most.

His father.

The person who shaped his entire life.

The person whose death created the man Victor became.

“You lied to me.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“For fifteen years.”

“Yes.”

Victor’s expression became empty.

“And you expected me to forgive you?”

“No.”

Adrian lowered the weapon slightly.

“I never expected forgiveness.”

“Then why?”

The question came quietly.

Why confess now?

Why reveal everything?

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“Because your son deserved the truth.”

Victor followed his gaze.

Ethan was still there.

Still innocent.

Still unaware that his family was tearing itself apart.

Adrian continued.

“Your father made me promise something before he died.”

Victor stared.

“What?”

“To protect you.”

A bitter smile appeared on Adrian’s face.

“And I failed.”

Victor said nothing.

“You were supposed to hate me.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You were supposed to see me as the monster.”

A pause.

“Because if you knew the truth, Richard would have killed you too.”

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Victor noticed.

“You were afraid of him.”

Adrian looked at Richard.

“Yes.”

Richard laughed.

“Afraid?”

Adrian’s eyes became cold.

“You have no idea what you created.”

Richard stepped forward.

“I created nothing.”

He looked at Victor.

“I simply corrected a mistake.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“My father?”

Richard smiled.

“Your father was weak.”

The room became colder.

“He cared about loyalty. Honor. Family.”

Richard shook his head.

“That is why he lost.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You’re wrong.”

Richard looked at him.

“Still defending him after all these years?”

Thomas’s voice hardened.

“Your brother was a better man than you will ever be.”

Richard laughed.

“And yet he died.”

Victor’s fists tightened.

But before he could move, Ethan suddenly cried out.

“Daddy!”

Everyone turned.

The little boy had started crying.

The sound changed everything.

Because this was no longer about revenge.

No longer about old wounds.

A child was caught in the middle.

Victor moved instantly toward him.

But Richard raised his weapon.

“Stop.”

The entire room froze.

Victor’s eyes became dangerous.

“If you hurt him…”

Richard interrupted.

“I don’t want to hurt him.”

He looked at Ethan.

“I never wanted him involved.”

“Then why take him?”

Richard’s expression changed.

“Because you would never listen.”

A pause.

“You were too much like your father.”

Victor stared.

Richard continued.

“You built an empire on fear. You forgot the people destroyed along the way.”

Victor looked confused.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard’s eyes darkened.

“Your father destroyed my family.”

Thomas immediately spoke.

“That’s a lie.”

Richard looked at him.

“You know it isn’t.”

Victor looked between them.

“What family?”

Nobody answered.

Then Richard smiled.

“The family your father erased.”

A heavy silence.

Then Richard said:

“The family of the man Thomas Hale was protecting.”

Victor’s eyes moved toward Thomas.

Thomas looked away.

And that reaction told Victor everything.

There was another secret.

Another layer.

Another betrayal hidden beneath the first.

Richard stepped closer.

“You wanted the truth, Victor.”

He smiled.

“Now you’re going to get all of it.”

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Adrian’s phone.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What is it?”

Victor asked.

Adrian slowly turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

"The final piece is inside the Blackwood mansion."

Victor’s heart sank.

Because while they had been chasing the past…

Someone had been moving in the present.

Someone else was inside his home.

And Ethan was only the beginning.
