CHAPTER 2: THE NANNY’S HIDDEN PAST

The storm outside the Blackwood mansion grew louder.
Rain crashed against the enormous windows, turning the city lights of Chicago into blurred shadows.
Inside the mansion, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Victor Blackwood had learned something important during his years in power.
Silence was rarely empty.
Sometimes silence was a warning.
Sometimes it was the moment before a truth destroyed everything.
And tonight, the silence belonged to Lily.
Victor stood in the center of the foyer, holding Ethan tightly against his chest.
His son had finally stopped crying.
But the little boy refused to let go of him.
Every few seconds, Ethan looked toward Serena with frightened eyes, then quickly hid his face again.
That small reaction told Victor everything.
Children did not know how to fake fear.
They could not manipulate.
They could not create complicated lies.
They only knew what made them feel safe.
And right now, Serena Montigue was the person his son feared most.
Victor looked at Lily.
The young woman who had spent six months protecting Ethan.
The woman who had just risked her own life for his child.
But Serena’s words remained in his mind.
Ask your precious nanny why she never told you the truth about her past.
Victor had built an empire by discovering secrets.
Information was power.
And Lily had just become the biggest unanswered question in his world.
“Lily.”
Her eyes lifted.
“Yes, Mr. Blackwood?”
“Is there something you need to tell me?”
The question was gentle.
But Lily immediately understood what he meant.
Her face became pale.
Serena watched from across the room with a satisfied smile.
She had finally found a weakness.
For months, she had tried to remove Lily from the mansion.
She had complained that the nanny was too close to Ethan.
She had accused Lily of crossing boundaries.
But Victor always defended Lily.
Because every time he came home, he saw the same thing.
His son smiling.
His son learning.
His son becoming happier.
And Lily was always there.
Serena hated that.
She hated that a simple nanny had earned Ethan’s trust faster than she ever could.
But now she had found the weapon she needed.
A secret.
Lily lowered her eyes.
“I…”
She stopped.
Victor noticed the hesitation.
“Look at me.”
Slowly, Lily raised her head.
There was fear in her eyes.
Not fear of Victor.
Fear of what would happen if the truth came out.
“I’m listening,” Victor said.
Lily took a shaky breath.
“My name is not Lily Carter.”
The room became completely still.
Serena smiled.
“There it is.”
Victor ignored her.
“Then what is your name?”
Lily looked down.
“Lillian Rose Hale.”
The name meant nothing to most people.
But Victor was not most people.
His mind immediately began searching through memories.
Hale.
The name sounded familiar.
Not because of wealth.
Not because of politics.
Because of blood.
Years ago, there had been a family in Chicago known for one thing.
Loyalty.
The Hale family had worked with some of the oldest organizations in the city.
Including Victor’s father.
But the Hales disappeared after a violent conflict fifteen years ago.
Everyone believed they were gone.
Dead.
Erased.
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“Are you related to Thomas Hale?”
Lily looked surprised.
“Yes.”
A cold feeling moved through Victor.
Thomas Hale.
His father’s most trusted security adviser.
A man who had died protecting the Blackwood family.
A man whose death had changed the balance of power in Chicago.
“You’re his daughter?”
Lily nodded.
“My father was killed when I was five.”
Victor remained silent.
He remembered that night.
He remembered his father coming home covered in blood.
He remembered hearing that Thomas Hale had sacrificed himself during an attack.
But there was one thing nobody knew.
Thomas Hale had a daughter.
A child who disappeared afterward.
“I thought you were dead,” Victor said quietly.
Lily looked away.
“Everyone did.”
Serena crossed her arms.
“Isn’t this convenient?”
Victor looked at her.
She continued.
“She hides her identity, enters your house, gets close to your son, and you expect me to believe she has no plan?”
Lily’s expression broke.
“That’s not true.”
“Then why didn’t you tell him?”
Lily had no answer.
Because the answer was complicated.
Because the truth was dangerous.
Because she had spent years running from the Blackwood world.
“I wasn’t trying to hide anything,” Lily whispered.
Victor watched her carefully.
“Then explain.”
Lily closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked exhausted.
Like someone who had carried a heavy secret for too long.
“When my father died, I was taken away.”
Victor frowned.
“Taken away by who?”
Lily hesitated.
“My mother.”
Victor waited.
“She told me the Blackwoods were dangerous. She told me my father died because he trusted the wrong people.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“My family?”
“No.”
Lily looked at him.
“Not your family.”
A pause.
“Someone inside it.”
The words landed like a stone falling into deep water.
Victor’s eyes became colder.
“Who?”
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Serena laughed softly.
“Of course she doesn’t know.”
But Victor ignored her.
“Keep going.”
Lily continued.
“My mother changed our names. We moved constantly. She spent years afraid someone would find us.”
“Why?”
“Because before my father died, he discovered something.”
Victor’s attention sharpened.
“What?”
Lily swallowed.
“He discovered someone was selling information about the Blackwood family.”
The mansion seemed to become colder.
Victor’s jaw tightened.
A traitor.
Inside his organization.
A person who had betrayed his family from within.
Something that had always bothered him.
Because his father’s death had never made complete sense.
The official story was simple.
An enemy attack.
A tragic loss.
But Victor had always suspected there was more.
“You knew this when you came here?”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why become Ethan’s nanny?”
Lily looked at the child in his arms.
Her expression softened.
“Because I needed a job.”
Then she smiled sadly.
“And because I love children.”
Victor studied her.
There was no manipulation in her voice.
No hidden ambition.
Only pain.
Serena stepped forward.
“You’re really going to believe this?”
Victor turned toward her.
“Enough.”
One word.
But it carried the weight of a command.
Serena stopped.
Victor looked back at Lily.
“One more question.”
Lily waited.
“Why did you hide your identity from me?”
The question hurt her.
Because she knew the answer would sound suspicious.
“Because I knew exactly who you were.”
Victor remained silent.
“The most powerful man in Chicago.”
She looked at Ethan.
“And the father of the child I was hired to protect.”
Her voice became quieter.
“I was afraid if you knew my name, you would see me as a problem instead of a person.”
For the first time that night, Victor saw something beyond the secret.
He saw a young woman who had spent her entire life running.
Running from enemies.
Running from memories.
Running from a world she never chose.
Then Ethan suddenly moved.
The little boy reached toward Lily.
A tiny hand extended through the air.
“Li…”
Everyone froze.
It was the first word Ethan had spoken since the incident.
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
She stepped closer.
Victor allowed it.
Ethan grabbed her finger.
And Lily immediately broke.
All the strength she had forced herself to hold disappeared.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“I’m so sorry I couldn’t protect you sooner.”
Victor watched the scene quietly.
Something changed inside him.
Because he realized something.
Serena had spent months trying to prove Lily was dangerous.
But tonight, Lily had proven the opposite.
She had stood between his son and danger.
Even when nobody stood between danger and her.
Then Victor’s phone rang.
The screen showed a message from his head of security.
Victor answered.
“Speak.”
The voice on the other end sounded urgent.
“Sir… we checked the mansion cameras.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“And?”
A pause.
Then the man said:
“Someone deleted the footage from tonight.”
Victor looked slowly around the mansion.
That was impossible.
Only a few people had access.
Only trusted people.
The traitor was not outside.
The traitor was already inside.
Then another message arrived.
A single photograph.
Victor opened it.
And his blood ran cold.
It was a picture taken years ago.
A picture of Thomas Hale.
Standing beside someone Victor knew very well.
Someone who was supposed to be loyal.
Someone who was still alive.
Under the photograph was one sentence:
"Your father's killer has been protecting you all along."
Victor stared at the message.
For the first time in many years...
He felt uncertain.
Because the enemy he had been hunting...
May you like
Might have been standing beside him the entire time.
