CHAPTER 1: THE SOUND OF BETRAYAL

Victor Blackwood had heard thousands of screams in his lifetime.
Some came from enemies who begged for mercy.
Some came from men who thought they could challenge his empire.
Some came from people who discovered too late that crossing the Blackwood family meant walking into a storm they could never escape.
But none of those screams had ever frozen him in place.
Until tonight.
Because this scream belonged to his son.
Victor stood in the shadow of the mansion hallway, his hand still resting on the golden handle of the front door he had just closed behind him.
He had returned three hours earlier than planned.
A business meeting in New York had ended unexpectedly, and instead of staying overnight, he had decided to come home.
For years, people had whispered that Victor Blackwood had no weaknesses.
They said he was made of stone.
They said nothing could reach him.
They were wrong.
Because there was one person in this world who could bring him to his knees.
Fourteen-month-old Ethan.
His son.
The only piece of innocence Victor had left.
And now that innocence was crying in fear.
Victor’s eyes moved slowly through the grand foyer.
The massive chandelier above him illuminated the scene like a cruel spotlight.
Serena Montigue stood in the center of the room.
The woman he had trusted.
The woman he had planned to marry.
The woman everyone believed would soon become the next Mrs. Blackwood.
But Victor no longer saw the elegant woman who appeared beside him at charity galas.
He no longer saw the woman who smiled perfectly for cameras.
He saw the monster hiding behind the mask.
His eyes shifted lower.
Ethan was on the marble floor.
His small body shook.
His face was wet with tears.
And beside him was Lily.
The nanny who had cared for his son for six months.
The woman Serena always called insignificant.
The woman Serena believed nobody would ever defend.
But Victor had seen everything.
He had seen Lily crawling across the floor despite being injured.
He had seen her protect Ethan while nobody protected her.
He had heard Serena’s threats.
Nobody will ever find you.
The words echoed inside his head.
A dangerous silence filled the mansion.
Serena suddenly noticed something was wrong.
She looked toward the hallway.
Her confident expression disappeared.
For a brief second, fear crossed her face.
Then it vanished.
Because Serena Montigue was a woman who survived by controlling every situation.
She quickly straightened her dress.
“Victor.”
Her voice changed instantly.
Soft.
Gentle.
Almost innocent.
“I didn’t expect you home so early.”
Victor did not answer.
His eyes remained fixed on Ethan.
“Pick him up.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Serena smiled nervously.
“Victor, sweetheart, you misunderstood what happened.”
“Pick. Him. Up.”
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Even Serena’s confidence began to crack.
“I was only trying to discipline him.”
Victor finally looked at her.
And Serena felt something she had never felt before.
Fear.
Not because he was shouting.
Not because he was threatening her.
But because he wasn’t.
Victor Blackwood was most dangerous when he became quiet.
“You call that discipline?”
Serena swallowed.
“Victor, Lily is manipulating you. She has always been jealous of my relationship with Ethan. She probably staged this whole thing.”
Lily stared at her in disbelief.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Serena was still lying.
“She’s lying,” Lily whispered.
Her voice was weak.
But Victor heard it.
He walked toward her first.
Not Serena.
Not Ethan.
Lily.
He crouched beside her.
“Are you hurt?”
Lily looked surprised.
Out of everything happening, she had expected him to ask about his son first.
“I’m okay.”
She wasn’t.
Her voice trembled.
Her hands shook.
Her face was pale.
Victor noticed everything.
He noticed the bruises forming on her arm.
The pain in the way she moved.
The fear she was trying desperately to hide.
“You’re not okay.”
Lily looked down.
“I tried to protect him.”
Victor’s expression changed.
Something inside him broke.
Because Lily wasn’t asking for sympathy.
She wasn’t trying to prove she was right.
She was only worried about Ethan.
Victor stood slowly.
Then he walked toward his son.
He carefully lifted Ethan into his arms.
The little boy immediately grabbed onto his father’s shirt.
Victor felt Ethan’s tiny fingers trembling against him.
“It’s okay,” Victor whispered.
His voice softened in a way nobody in the criminal world had ever heard.
“Daddy’s here.”
Ethan buried his face against him.
Victor closed his eyes for one second.
Then he turned back toward Serena.
The woman standing before him was no longer his future wife.
She was a threat.
And threats were something Victor Blackwood knew how to handle.
“Tell me the truth.”
Serena forced a laugh.
“Victor, you’re really going to believe a nanny over me?”
Victor stared at her.
“Yes.”
The answer came instantly.
Serena froze.
“Yes?”
Victor stepped closer.
“Because my son was terrified of you.”
Silence.
“And because Lily risked herself to protect him.”
Serena’s face hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Victor looked at her coldly.
“No.”
He glanced at Ethan.
Then at Lily.
“The mistake was trusting you.”
Serena’s breathing became faster.
She had spent months building her perfect image.
She had convinced everyone she was kind.
Elegant.
Loving.
But now the one person whose opinion mattered most had seen behind the curtain.
And Victor Blackwood never forgave betrayal.
Serena’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you know everything?”
Victor said nothing.
She smiled.
A small, dangerous smile.
“Victor… if you destroy me, you’ll lose more than you think.”
For the first time, Victor noticed something strange.
Serena wasn’t afraid enough.
A person caught hurting a child should be terrified.
But Serena looked like someone who still had a card left to play.
And that worried him.
“What are you hiding?”
Serena didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked toward Lily.
Then toward Ethan.
And whispered:
“Ask your precious nanny why she never told you the truth about her past.”
The room went silent.
Lily’s face changed.
Victor noticed.
And for the first time that night…
A new question entered his mind.
What was Serena talking about?
And why did Lily look like she was carrying a secret that could destroy everything?
Outside the mansion, thunder rolled across the Chicago sky.
Inside the Blackwood mansion, the first piece of a much darker truth had just been revealed.
