CHAPTER 11: THE MOTHER BEHIND THE MASK

For fifteen years, Victor Blackwood had carried the same wound.

A wound that never healed.

A wound created by a single moment.

The day he lost his mother.

He remembered the silence afterward.

The empty room.

The black suit.

The people around him whispering that he had to be strong.

That he was a Blackwood.

That Blackwoods did not break.

So he learned.

He buried his pain.

He turned grief into ambition.

He turned loneliness into power.

And now…

The impossible had happened.

His mother was alive.

Victor stood in the mansion hallway, unable to move.

Around him were people who had lied to him for years.

Adrian.

Thomas.

Serena.

Everyone had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except him.

The one person who had lived inside the lie.

His mother.

“Where is she?”

His voice was barely controlled.

The guard answered through the speaker.

“Control room, sir.”

Victor immediately moved.

Nobody stopped him.

Because everyone understood.

This was not a business decision.

Not a revenge mission.

This was a son looking for his mother.

The control room was hidden behind another secret entrance.

Another secret.

Another reminder that the Blackwood mansion was not a home.

It was a fortress built on buried truths.

Victor opened the door.

And stopped.

A woman stood inside.

Older.

Different.

But familiar.

Her dark hair was streaked with silver.

Her face carried years of pain.

But her eyes…

Her eyes were the same.

The eyes Victor remembered from childhood.

“Victor.”

One word.

One voice.

And suddenly he was eight years old again.

A child waiting at the door for his mother to return.

A child who never understood why she never did.

Victor’s face remained cold.

But his eyes betrayed him.

“You’re alive.”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Then Victor asked the question that had haunted him for years.

“Why?”

His mother looked down.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

Why did you leave?

Why did you let me believe you were dead?

Why did you make me grow up without you?

“I had no choice.”

Victor laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that.”

His mother looked hurt.

“I know.”

“No.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You don’t know.”

His voice became stronger.

“You don’t know what it was like.”

A pause.

“You don’t know what it felt like to lose you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought about you every day.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“But you stayed away.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

She did not deny it.

She did not create excuses.

She simply accepted the pain.

“Why?”

She took a breath.

“Because if I came back, you would die.”

Victor froze.

“What?”

His mother looked around the room.

“At first, I thought your father was the danger.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

She walked toward a table covered with documents.

“But I was wrong.”

She touched an old photograph.

“The real danger was the system around him.”

Victor looked at her.

“The Voss network.”

She nodded.

“You know about Daniel Voss.”

“Yes.”

Her expression became serious.

“Daniel Voss built something that survived generations.”

“A network.”

“Yes.”

She looked at Victor.

“A machine that controlled powerful people without anyone knowing.”

Victor remembered the documents.

The files.

The names.

The influence.

“And my father tried to destroy it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone say he was the villain?”

His mother looked away.

“Because Daniel Voss controlled the story.”

Victor understood.

Power was not only money.

Not only weapons.

Power was controlling what people believed.

“What happened the night you disappeared?”

His mother became quiet.

“That night, your father discovered the person closest to him was working for Voss.”

Victor already knew the answer.

“Adrian.”

She nodded.

“But Adrian was not the only one.”

Victor frowned.

“What do you mean?”

She looked at him.

“Someone else inside the family helped.”

Richard.

Victor immediately thought of his uncle.

“Richard?”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“Not Richard.”

Victor froze.

“Then who?”

Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

Everyone inside the mansion froze.

The emergency lights activated seconds later.

Victor immediately moved in front of his mother.

A habit.

Even after fifteen years.

Even after everything.

She was still his mother.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

Security rushed through the halls.

Then a message appeared on every screen in the mansion.

A video.

A man appeared.

Daniel Voss.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

Victor stared.

Impossible.

Everyone thought he was dead.

But apparently, death had become another lie in the Blackwood world.

Daniel spoke.

“Victor Blackwood.”

His voice echoed through the mansion.

“You finally opened the door.”

Victor watched silently.

Daniel continued.

“For years, I wondered if you would become like your father.”

A pause.

“Or worse.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“You’re the one behind this.”

Daniel smiled.

“I am the reason you exist.”

The room became silent.

Victor stepped closer to the screen.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel smiled.

“Your father wanted to destroy my work.”

A pause.

“So I changed the plan.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“What plan?”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“The Blackwood empire needed a new leader.”

A pause.

“Someone stronger.”

Victor’s blood ran cold.

“You.”

Daniel smiled.

“Yes.”

The words echoed.

“You were never just an heir.”

“You were an experiment.”

Nobody spoke.

Victor felt like the ground beneath him disappeared.

His entire life.

His choices.

His rise to power.

Was it all planned?

Daniel continued.

“Your father tried to save you from me.”

A pause.

“But he failed.”

Victor’s fists tightened.

“What did you do to him?”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“I gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“To betray everything he built…”

A pause.

“Or lose you.”

Victor stopped.

Daniel continued.

“He chose you.”

For the first time, Victor saw something different.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Sadness.

Because maybe…

His father had not been hiding secrets to hurt him.

Maybe he had been hiding them to protect him.

Daniel’s video continued.

“But now the choice belongs to you.”

The screen changed.

A countdown appeared.

24:00:00.

Victor stared.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered:

“A test.”

The countdown began.

23:59:59.

Daniel smiled.

“Destroy the Blackwood empire…”

A pause.

“Or become exactly what your father feared.”

The screen went black.

Silence returned.

Everyone looked at Victor.

The most powerful man in Chicago.

The man who had spent his life building control.

But now he faced the one battle he could not win with money or violence.

A battle against his own identity.

Lily stepped closer.

“Victor.”

He looked at her.

For a moment, he looked lost.

Then Ethan walked toward him.

The little boy grabbed his father’s hand.

And Victor looked down.

His son.

The reason he had changed.

The reason he could not become the monster everyone expected.

Victor finally understood.

This was never about power.

It was about choice.

And for the first time in his life…

May you like

Victor Blackwood had to decide who he truly was.
