CHAPTER 8 THE LETTER HER MOTHER NEVER GOT TO READ ALOUD

No one moved.

The only sound inside Blackwood Manor was the steady rhythm of rain striking the reinforced windows.

Dozens of men and women wearing the silver phoenix crest stood silently in the grand ballroom.

They did not bow to Alexander Blackwood.

They did not acknowledge the politicians, billionaires, or celebrities gathered around them.

Their eyes rested on only one person.

Emily.

Or...

As Jonathan Graves had called her...

Evelyn.

Emily instinctively stepped back.

"You've made a mistake."

Jonathan shook his head.

"I've made many mistakes."

"This is not one of them."

Alexander glanced at the unopened envelope in his hand.

The wax seal remained unbroken.

Charlotte's handwriting stared back at him.

For my daughter, Evelyn.

He slowly looked at Emily.

"I think..."

"This belongs to you."

Emily's hands trembled as she accepted it.

"I don't even know if that's my name."

Alexander answered quietly,

"Then perhaps the letter does."

The ballroom watched in complete silence.

Emily hesitated.

For twenty-two years she had imagined what it might feel like to receive something from her mother.

A birthday card.

A photograph.

Anything.

Now...

The answer to her entire life rested between her fingers.

She carefully broke the ancient wax seal.

Inside was a single folded sheet of cream-colored paper.

Nothing more.

No legal documents.

No fortune.

Just a letter.

The handwriting was elegant.

Gentle.

Every stroke looked deliberate.

Emily swallowed hard.

Then she began to read.

My dearest Evelyn,

Her voice nearly failed on the first line.

If you are reading this, then I was unable to keep my promise to come back for you.

Several guests quietly lowered their heads.

Even Jonathan's expression softened, if only for a heartbeat.

Emily continued.

You will probably grow up believing you were abandoned.

You were not.

Tears blurred the words.

She wiped her eyes and forced herself onward.

The day you were born, I stopped being the daughter of a powerful family.

I became your mother.

Alexander closed his eyes.

He could hear Charlotte's voice in every sentence.

Power can be rebuilt.

Money can be earned again.

But a child only gets one chance to survive.

Emily's breathing became uneven.

Her hands shook so violently the paper rustled through the silent ballroom.

If I disappear, it means I chose your life over my own.

Never hate the people who hid you.

They carried a burden I asked them to carry.

Emily looked instinctively toward Catherine.

Catherine was crying openly now.

One day you will learn your real name.

When that day comes...

Remember this above everything else.

Emily paused.

Her voice broke.

"What?"

Alexander whispered.

She nodded.

Do not inherit our enemies.

Choose your own future.

A long silence followed.

Then the final paragraph.

Emily's tears fell freely onto the page.

Whether you become a queen or a waitress...

Whether the world remembers you or forgets you...

You will always be the greatest thing I ever created.

Love always,

Mom.

The letter slipped from Emily's hands.

Alexander caught it before it touched the floor.

No one in the ballroom spoke.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Jonathan Graves finally broke the silence.

"Charlotte was always sentimental."

Alexander's eyes became ice.

"You don't get to speak about her."

Jonathan smiled faintly.

"I knew her long before you did."

Emily looked up sharply.

"You knew my mother?"

"I trained her."

The room froze.

"You what?"

Jonathan folded his hands.

"The Phoenix Consortium prepares every heir from childhood."

"Economics."

"Politics."

"Languages."

"Negotiation."

"Psychology."

"They are educated to lead."

He looked toward the letter.

"Charlotte was my finest student."

Emily frowned.

"Then why did she run?"

Jonathan answered without hesitation.

"Because she fell in love."

His gaze shifted to Alexander.

"With the one man she was forbidden to marry."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"So your organization tried to kill her."

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

"No."

"We tried to bring her home."

Richard Sterling suddenly laughed bitterly.

"Tell the whole truth."

Jonathan looked at him.

Richard continued.

"When she refused..."

"...you ordered her eliminated."

The ballroom exploded into whispers again.

Jonathan remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Alexander slowly stepped forward.

"For six years..."

"I believed fate took her."

He looked directly into Jonathan's eyes.

"But it was you."

Jonathan sighed.

"Alexander..."

"You still misunderstand."

"I gave no such order."

Richard looked up in disbelief.

"What?"

Jonathan turned calmly toward him.

"I ordered Charlotte returned alive."

Richard's face drained of color.

"No..."

Jonathan's eyes hardened.

"You decided dead was more convenient."

Every guest turned toward Richard.

His lips trembled.

"I..."

"You exceeded your authority."

Jonathan's voice became colder than anyone had yet heard.

"You attempted to murder Charlotte Monroe."

"You kidnapped her child."

"You stole consortium assets."

"You manipulated Blackwood Global."

"And then..."

"You lied to me."

Richard staggered backward.

"You knew?"

"I know everything."

Jonathan raised one finger.

Two masked men immediately stepped forward.

They seized Richard without resistance.

"No!"

Richard struggled.

"Jonathan!"

"I served you for twenty years!"

Jonathan didn't even look at him.

"You served yourself."

The masked men dragged Richard toward the ballroom exit.

His desperate screams echoed through the mansion.

No one followed.

No one objected.

A minute later...

Silence.

Jonathan finally spoke.

"Justice has begun."

Emily stared in disbelief.

"You just..."

"You just sentenced him."

Jonathan answered simply,

"No."

"I relieved him of his position."

"What happens next..."

"...is no longer my decision."

Emily suddenly realized something.

She looked around the room.

Every member of the Phoenix families.

Every elder.

Every executive.

Every influential figure.

All of them...

Were looking at her.

Not Jonathan.

Her.

Jonathan smiled.

"According to the Charter..."

"The acting Chair cannot judge crimes committed against the bloodline."

Emily frowned.

"Then who can?"

Jonathan bowed his head.

"The heir."

Her heartbeat stopped.

"I don't..."

"I can't..."

Jonathan finished the sentence for her.

"You must."

At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened once more.

A masked guard hurried inside, his composure finally broken.

He dropped to one knee before Jonathan.

"Chairman..."

"We've searched the east grounds."

Jonathan nodded.

"And?"

The guard swallowed hard.

"We found another vehicle."

Alexander's instincts flared.

"What vehicle?"

The guard looked first at Jonathan...

Then at Emily.

Finally, he spoke the words that made every person in the room turn toward the entrance.

"There was a woman inside."

"Alive."

Alexander's breath caught.

The guard continued.

"She refuses to give her name."

"But..."

He hesitated.

"When we showed her a photograph of Charlotte Monroe..."

May you like

"...she started crying."

End of Chapter 8.
