CHAPTER 1 THE GLASS THAT STARTED A WAR

The crystal shattered long before it ever touched the marble.

Not because someone had thrown it.

Because the silence inside Blackwood Manor had become too heavy to hold anything together.

Every guest in the grand ballroom froze.

A violinist stopped in the middle of a note.

Champagne glasses remained suspended halfway to smiling lips.

Nobody dared breathe.

In the center of the polished marble floor knelt a young woman wearing a simple cream-colored dress.

Dark red wine dripped from her hair.

It rolled down her cheeks like blood.

It stained her collar.

Her trembling hands instinctively tried to wipe away the liquid, only spreading the crimson across the fabric until it resembled an open wound.

She lowered her head.

Not because she was guilty.

Because humiliation weighed more than the soaked cloth clinging to her skin.

Standing over her was Victoria Ashford.

Perfect posture.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

The future Mrs. Blackwood.

The woman every magazine called the Queen of New York's elite.

She slowly placed the empty crystal glass behind her back.

No one noticed.

Or rather...

No one wanted to notice.

"You should know your place," Victoria said softly enough that only those closest could hear.

"Servants shouldn't stand beside royalty."

Several guests chuckled.

One woman covered her mouth to hide her laughter.

Another whispered,

"She's lucky Victoria only used wine."

"The girl should apologize."

"Imagine embarrassing the hostess like that."

The kneeling woman remained silent.

Her name was Emily Carter.

Officially...

She was nothing more than Blackwood Manor's newest housemaid.

Unofficially...

Very few people knew why Alexander Blackwood had personally hired her only three months earlier.

Emily swallowed.

She refused to cry.

Not here.

Not in front of hundreds of strangers waiting to watch her break.

Victoria leaned closer.

"So?"

"No apology?"

Emily finally looked up.

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

"I didn't touch you."

Victoria's eyes flashed for only a fraction of a second.

Then came the performance.

"What?"

"I... I don't understand..."

Her lower lip trembled.

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

She stumbled backward exactly two steps.

Just enough.

Perfectly rehearsed.

"I was only trying to help you..."

Several women rushed toward Victoria.

"My dear..."

"Don't upset yourself."

"She's obviously lying."

One elderly businessman frowned.

"I've never seen such an ungrateful servant."

Another nodded.

"Fire her immediately."

Victoria lowered her face into her hands.

"I don't want anyone punished..."

Her voice cracked beautifully.

"I only wanted tonight to be perfect..."

Applause of sympathy quietly spread through the room.

Emily stared.

It was astonishing.

Every tear.

Every shaky breath.

Every broken sentence.

Nothing felt spontaneous.

Everything had rhythm.

Like an actress delivering the role of her lifetime.

Then...

The front doors opened.

The sound echoed across the ballroom.

Every servant immediately stepped aside.

Every guest straightened their posture.

Alexander Blackwood had arrived.

The billionaire rarely attended charity galas hosted in his own mansion.

Yet when he appeared...

Entire conversations died instantly.

His tailored black suit looked untouched by the rain outside.

His expression remained unreadable.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerously calm.

Victoria's heart raced.

Perfect timing.

She hurried toward him before anyone else could speak.

"Alexander..."

Fresh tears rolled effortlessly down her cheeks.

"I tried to welcome the new maid..."

"But she became aggressive..."

"I don't know what I did wrong..."

She gently reached for his arm.

He didn't move.

Didn't comfort her.

Didn't even blink.

His eyes had already drifted past her.

Toward Emily.

Still kneeling.

Still soaked.

Still silently trying to preserve what little dignity remained.

For several endless seconds...

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Alexander slowly walked across the ballroom.

His polished shoes clicked against the marble.

Each step sounded louder than the last.

Victoria smiled to herself.

She knew exactly what came next.

The maid would be dismissed.

Perhaps arrested.

Maybe even blacklisted from every wealthy household in Manhattan.

Nobody crossed Victoria Ashford.

Nobody.

Alexander stopped.

Emily kept her head lowered.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I ruined your event."

The room collectively exhaled.

There it was.

An admission.

Victoria almost smiled.

Then...

A sharp crack exploded through the ballroom.

Several guests screamed.

Someone dropped a champagne bottle.

Victoria staggered sideways.

One crimson handprint bloomed across her flawless face.

She stared at Alexander in disbelief.

"You..."

Her voice failed.

He had slapped her.

Not hard enough to injure.

Hard enough to destroy the illusion.

The ballroom became utterly silent.

Alexander's voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Who gave you permission?"

Victoria blinked.

"What?"

"To touch someone under my protection."

Every word landed like ice.

Her pulse thundered.

Protection?

Emily?

No.

Impossible.

She forced another tear.

"Alexander... she attacked me..."

He looked at the wine dripping from Emily's sleeves.

Then at Victoria's perfectly clean gown.

Finally...

He asked one question.

"Is that your final version?"

Victoria nodded immediately.

"Yes."

Alexander simply replied,

"Interesting."

Nothing more.

He turned toward his chief of security.

"Lock every exit."

Confusion swept through the guests.

"What?"

"No one leaves."

The guards immediately obeyed.

Heavy doors sealed shut.

Metal locks clicked into place.

People exchanged nervous glances.

Victoria forced a laugh.

"This seems unnecessary..."

Alexander ignored her.

Instead...

He looked toward the ceiling.

Specifically...

Toward an antique chandelier.

Hidden among hundreds of glittering crystals...

A tiny black lens reflected the ballroom lights.

Almost invisible.

Unless someone knew exactly where to look.

Victoria's blood froze.

Her smile disappeared.

For the first time that evening...

Real fear entered her eyes.

Alexander spoke only seven words.

"Play the security footage for everyone."

The technician reached for the remote.

The giant LED screen behind the orchestra flickered to life.

Victoria's knees nearly gave out.

Because fifteen seconds...

Only fifteen seconds...

Had the power to erase everything she had spent ten years building.

And as the first frame appeared...

Someone in the crowd whispered,

May you like

"My God..."

End of Chapter 1.
