CHAPTER 2 FIFTEEN SECONDS OF TRUTH

"My God..."
The whisper spread through the ballroom like a spark racing across dry grass.
Hundreds of eyes snapped toward the massive LED screen suspended above the orchestra stage.
No one spoke.
No one even remembered the half-finished conversations, the expensive champagne, or the charity gala that had brought them there.
Everything narrowed to a single image.
Victoria Ashford.
Frozen on screen.
Perfect.
Elegant.
Smiling.
For one heartbeat, she exhaled.
Maybe...
Maybe the camera had no audio.
Maybe the angle was wrong.
Maybe...
The video began to play.
The footage was crystal clear.
Emily stood quietly beside a serving table, arranging glasses with careful hands.
She wasn't looking at Victoria.
She wasn't speaking to anyone.
She was simply doing her job.
Victoria appeared from the edge of the frame.
Her smile was dazzling.
Warm.
Friendly.
Exactly the smile that had earned millions of followers on magazine covers and charity campaigns.
She even picked up a wine glass with graceful fingers.
Several guests nodded.
"See?"
"I told you."
Then...
The angle shifted slightly.
The hidden camera revealed something no guest had seen.
Victoria glanced over both shoulders.
Once.
Twice.
Making sure Alexander hadn't arrived.
Making sure no security guard stood close enough to intervene.
Her smile vanished.
Completely.
The warmth disappeared from her face as though someone had switched off a light.
What remained was something colder.
Crueler.
She stepped directly toward Emily.
The footage had no music.
No dramatic narration.
Only the unmistakable sound of Victoria's voice.
"You'll never belong here."
Emily looked confused.
"I... excuse me?"
"You heard me."
Victoria tilted the wine glass.
Dark crimson liquid poured slowly over Emily's head.
Not by accident.
Not from clumsiness.
Deliberately.
The wine soaked her hair.
Ran across her face.
Splashed onto the marble.
Emily instinctively stepped backward.
"I didn't do anything..."
Victoria leaned close enough that the hidden microphone caught every word.
"You existed."
Then...
She smiled.
A smile no one in the ballroom had ever seen before.
Cold.
Satisfied.
Predatory.
She placed the empty crystal glass behind her back.
Counted silently.
One...
Two...
Three...
The mansion doors opened.
Instantly...
The predator vanished.
Her shoulders began trembling.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Her breathing turned uneven.
She transformed into the frightened victim so quickly it looked supernatural.
The footage ended.
Exactly fifteen seconds.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Silence.
Not polite silence.
Not awkward silence.
This was the kind of silence that exists after an earthquake.
People stared at Victoria as if meeting her for the first time.
The elderly businessman who had demanded Emily be fired slowly lowered his head.
A woman who had comforted Victoria moments earlier quietly stepped away from her.
Someone whispered,
"She rehearsed it."
Another replied,
"No..."
"She perfected it."
The whispers multiplied.
"I can't believe it."
"Did you hear what she said?"
"'You existed.'"
"Who says something like that?"
Victoria felt the room changing around her.
Like a tide pulling away from shore.
Support disappeared.
Sympathy evaporated.
Every admiring gaze became suspicion.
Every smile became judgment.
"No..."
She shook her head violently.
"No!"
"That video..."
"It's edited!"
Alexander didn't answer.
She pointed toward the screen.
"Someone manipulated it!"
"The audio is fake!"
The head of Blackwood Security stepped forward.
"Impossible."
His voice echoed across the ballroom.
"The recording comes directly from the manor's internal archive."
"It has never been altered."
Victoria's breathing quickened.
"Then someone hacked the system!"
Again...
"No."
"The archive is stored offline."
Another crack appeared in the foundation beneath her.
She looked around desperately.
"Someone say something!"
No one did.
Not even her closest friends.
Emily still hadn't moved.
She remained kneeling on the marble floor.
Not because anyone forced her.
Because she still couldn't understand why Alexander had defended her.
She looked toward him.
Their eyes met briefly.
There was no triumph in his expression.
No satisfaction.
Only calculation.
As though tonight wasn't over.
Not even close.
Alexander removed his suit jacket.
Without a word...
He draped it across Emily's shoulders.
The expensive black fabric covered the wine-soaked dress.
For the first time all evening...
Someone treated her like a human being.
Emily whispered,
"Thank you..."
Alexander simply nodded.
Then he turned back toward Victoria.
"This is your final opportunity."
She blinked.
"...For what?"
"To tell the truth."
Victoria swallowed.
"I already have!"
Alexander's expression never changed.
"Very well."
He raised one finger.
The technician hesitated.
"Sir?"
"Continue."
The technician frowned.
"There are... additional recordings."
The ballroom stirred.
Additional?
Victoria's stomach dropped.
"No."
She whispered it so quietly only she could hear.
No.
There shouldn't be more.
The hidden camera had only captured fifteen seconds.
Hadn't it?
The technician clicked another file.
The screen flickered again.
This recording was different.
Different date.
Different room.
A private lounge inside Blackwood Manor.
Victoria's face turned white.
She recognized the room instantly.
Recognized the dress she was wearing.
Recognized the man sitting beside her.
His face remained hidden from the camera.
Only his voice could be heard.
Victoria smiled at him.
"I almost feel sorry for Alexander."
The man's laugh was low.
"You?"
"Sorry?"
She shrugged.
"Only a little."
"What if he finds out?"
"He won't."
"And the maid?"
Victoria laughed.
"A servant?"
"Nobody believes servants."
The unknown man chuckled.
"You really enjoy breaking people."
Her answer froze the ballroom.
"No."
She slowly sipped her wine.
"I enjoy watching them realize no one is coming to save them."
The recording stopped.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
One woman covered her mouth.
Another quietly began crying.
Even those who had spent years admiring Victoria suddenly felt as though they had never known her at all.
But Alexander wasn't looking at the guests.
He was looking at the man standing near the back of the ballroom.
A middle-aged investor.
One of Blackwood Global's board members.
The man's face had gone pale.
His hands trembled.
Alexander spoke calmly.
"Would you like to explain why your voice appears in a private recording with my fiancée?"
The investor didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because every eye in the room had already turned toward him.
And in that single unbearable moment...
He realized the video wasn't exposing just one liar.
May you like
It was exposing the beginning of an entire conspiracy.
End of Chapter 2.
