CHAPTER 6 THE NIGHT THE MANSION BECAME A FORTRESS

The emergency alarms screamed without mercy.

Red lights pulsed across the ballroom, bathing priceless paintings and crystal chandeliers in the color of fresh blood.

Smoke drifted through the broken windows.

Outside...

Rain hammered against the estate.

Lightning split the sky, briefly illuminating a dozen masked figures advancing across the front lawn with military precision.

They weren't panicking.

They weren't rushing.

They were hunting.

Alexander didn't waste a second.

"Lockdown Protocol Black."

His voice cut through the chaos.

The command stunned the security team.

Protocol Black.

It had never been used.

Not once.

Hayes immediately pressed a code into his radio.

"All units. Protocol Black is active. Seal every interior corridor. Move civilians to the underground shelter. Authorization: Blackwood Alpha."

The estate came alive.

Heavy steel doors hidden inside the walls slammed shut one after another.

Massive reinforced barriers descended over the shattered windows.

The elegant mansion transformed before the guests' eyes.

It had never been just a mansion.

It was a fortress disguised as one.

Panic erupted.

"What's happening?"

"They're locking us in!"

"We need to leave!"

A senator grabbed Alexander's arm.

"My security team is outside!"

Alexander calmly pulled away.

"If they're still outside..."

"They're already dead."

The senator went pale.

Emily stood frozen.

Only minutes ago she had been a housemaid humiliated before hundreds of people.

Now she was trapped inside a billionaire's fortress while armed men surrounded the property.

It felt unreal.

Alexander walked toward her.

"Stay close to me."

She looked up.

"Why?"

His answer was immediate.

"Because tonight..."

"They aren't here for me."

Emily frowned.

"They're here for you."

Before she could ask another question...

A burst of automatic gunfire echoed outside.

Bullets hammered against the reinforced shutters.

The guests screamed.

Several dropped to the floor.

Children cried.

Glass continued raining from the ceiling.

Hayes spoke into his earpiece.

"Perimeter Team Two is down."

A pause.

"Team Four has lost contact."

Another pause.

"They're cutting communications."

Alexander's expression remained unreadable.

But inside...

He knew exactly what that meant.

These weren't ordinary assassins.

They were professionals.

Former military.

Disciplined.

Expensive.

Richard Sterling suddenly laughed.

Softly at first.

Then louder.

The sound made everyone's skin crawl.

Victoria stared at him.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Richard looked at Alexander.

"You finally understand."

Alexander said nothing.

Richard continued.

"You spent months chasing shadows."

"You thought I was your enemy."

He smiled bitterly.

"I was only an employee."

Emily looked between them.

"What is he talking about?"

Richard ignored her.

"You still don't know who you're fighting."

Alexander answered quietly,

"I know enough."

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"You know almost nothing."

"You've spent six years looking for the wrong people."

Alexander took one deliberate step closer.

"Then tell me."

Richard smiled.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because..."

Richard looked toward the broken windows.

"...he's already here."

BOOM!

The massive front doors exploded inward.

Splintered oak flew across the ballroom.

Guests screamed and ducked for cover.

Smoke poured into the entrance hall.

From within the haze...

One man walked forward.

Alone.

No mask.

No weapon visible.

Perfectly tailored charcoal overcoat.

Black leather gloves.

Silver hair.

Perhaps sixty years old.

He moved with the quiet confidence of someone who had never been told "no."

The masked gunmen behind him lowered their rifles.

Not toward the guests.

Toward the floor.

As though acknowledging their commander.

Richard lowered his head.

Victoria unconsciously stepped backward.

Even Alexander's eyes narrowed.

The newcomer smiled politely.

"Good evening."

His voice was warm.

Cultured.

Almost grandfatherly.

He removed one glove.

"Alexander."

"It's been too long."

Alexander stared at him.

"I don't know you."

The man chuckled.

"No."

"You wouldn't."

"But your father did."

A ripple of confusion spread through the ballroom.

Alexander's father had been dead for twelve years.

The stranger glanced around the room as if admiring the decorations.

"What a shame."

"So many important people."

"So many witnesses."

He sighed dramatically.

"And now..."

"They all have to disappear."

Several guests gasped.

Hayes immediately raised his pistol.

"Don't move!"

The stranger didn't even look at him.

Instead...

He looked at Emily.

For the first time...

His smile became genuine.

"There you are."

Emily felt her blood run cold.

"...Do I know you?"

"No."

"But I've been looking for you..."

"...for twenty-six years."

The ballroom fell silent.

Twenty-six years?

Emily was twenty-six.

Alexander stepped in front of her.

"What do you want?"

The old man smiled.

"I want what has always belonged to me."

He pointed directly at Emily.

"Bring me the girl."

Hayes shouted,

"Take him!"

Four armed security officers rushed forward.

The old man didn't move.

He simply snapped his fingers.

Four suppressed gunshots echoed almost simultaneously.

Pop.

Pop.

Pop.

Pop.

The security officers collapsed before taking three steps.

Hidden snipers.

Alexander's pupils contracted.

The shots had come from outside.

The attackers had positioned snipers around the estate long before the explosion.

The old man spoke almost apologetically.

"I dislike unnecessary violence."

"But your men insisted."

Guests began sobbing openly.

No one doubted him anymore.

This wasn't a kidnapping.

It was an execution.

Alexander's voice remained steady.

"Who are you?"

The old man smiled.

"You've been reading my name all evening."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

The stranger looked at Richard Sterling.

"Tell him."

Richard's shoulders trembled.

He whispered,

"...Chairman."

The word hit Alexander like a hammer.

Chairman?

Richard slowly looked up.

Terror filled his eyes.

"He..."

"...is the real Chairman of the organization."

The old man bowed slightly.

"A pleasure."

"My name..."

He paused deliberately, watching Alexander's expression.

"...is Jonathan Graves."

The name meant nothing to the guests.

But Alexander froze.

Because he had seen that name before.

Hidden deep inside classified financial records.

A name that appeared for decades without a single photograph.

A ghost.

A myth.

The invisible investor behind shell companies that had quietly acquired pieces of global corporations for thirty years.

No government had ever proven he existed.

No journalist had ever interviewed him.

Many believed "Jonathan Graves" was merely a code name used by multiple people.

Yet now...

The ghost stood inside Blackwood Manor.

Alive.

Smiling.

And pointing at Emily.

Jonathan's eyes settled on Alexander one last time.

"You've spent six years searching for your wife."

"You should have spent them asking a different question."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"What question?"

Jonathan's smile widened.

"Who was she..."

"...before she married you?"

Emily felt her heart stop.

Jonathan took one slow step forward.

"Because Charlotte Monroe..."

May you like

"...was never her real name."

End of Chapter 6.
