Chapter 19 - The ConfessionMartin's confession was thirty-seven pages.

He admitted helping Daniel manipulate evidence.

He admitted arranging meetings.

He admitted paying investigators.

He admitted creating false narratives about Ava.

And he admitted something else.

Daniel had planned to leave the country.

Not in September.

The real departure date was tomorrow.

He intended to disappear immediately after the hearing.

The courthouse erupted.

Police units were dispatched to Daniel's properties.

The airport was placed on alert.

But Daniel was gone.

His house was empty.

His office was empty.

His cars were abandoned.

His bank accounts had been drained.

The trust account containing Ava's money had also been emptied.

Hale stared at the financial records.

"He moved everything."

"Where?"

"We don't know."

Claire looked at the map.

Then at Ava.

"He has one place left."

"The lake house."

Hale shook his head.

"Already searched."

"Not the tunnel."

"We searched the tunnel."

"Not the end."

Hale frowned.

Claire pointed to the map.

"The private airstrip isn't the end."

"Then what is?"

She looked at Ava.

"The house."

Ava remembered the red door.

The machine.

The crying.

A second door.

She suddenly understood.

"There was another staircase."

Hale looked at her.

"Where?"

"Behind the wall."

They returned to the lake house.

The hidden passage had a false wall.

Behind it was a second staircase.

Down.

Farther than before.

At the bottom was a room.

Inside:

Computers.

Hard drives.

Documents.

And Daniel.

He stood beside a table.

No weapon.

No panic.

Just waiting.

Ava stepped into the room.

Her mother grabbed her arm.

Hale raised his weapon.

"Daniel Mercer."

Daniel smiled.

"You found me."

Ava stared at him.

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why did you do all of it?"

He looked at her.

"Because nobody survives power by trusting people."

"You destroyed your own family."

Daniel's expression barely moved.

"Family is a liability."

Elena cried quietly.

Daniel looked at her.

"I gave you everything."

"You gave me fear."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I gave you protection."

Ava stepped forward.

"From what?"

Daniel looked at her.

"From the world."

Ava almost laughed.

"The world wasn't the one I was afraid of."

Silence.

Daniel's face finally changed.

He looked tired.

Human.

Almost.

Then he said something Ava never expected.

"I know."

She froze.

"What?"

"I knew."

Daniel looked at her.

"I knew you were afraid."

Elena's face hardened.

"Then why?"

He looked at the floor.

"Because fear was the only thing that ever worked."

Hale stepped forward.

"You're under arrest."

Daniel didn't resist.

He raised his hands.

Then looked at Ava.

"You still don't know the whole truth."

Ava felt cold.

"What truth?"

Daniel smiled.

"Ask your mother who your real father is."

Elena went completely still.

Ava looked at her.

"Mom?"

Elena's lips parted.

She couldn't speak.

Daniel was led away.

But Ava couldn't move.

Her mother had tears in her eyes.

And then she whispered:

"Daniel isn't your biological father."
