Chapter 11 - Phase ThreeThe envelope contained recordings of judges, lawyers, police officers, businessmen, journalists and politicians.

Some were embarrassing.
Some were compromising.
Some appeared criminal.
Daniel had been collecting leverage for years.
The strategy became obvious.
If anyone tried to prosecute him, he would retaliate.
Not by attacking them.
By exposing them.
It was a shield made of secrets.
Hale called it catastrophic.
Elena called it evil.
Ava just felt tired.
"So that's why nobody stopped him."
Claire nodded.
"He made everyone afraid of what he knew."
"And me?"
Claire looked at her.
"You were different."
"How?"
"You were the only person he couldn't buy."
Ava laughed bitterly.
"I was fourteen."
"Exactly."
Meanwhile, the district attorney's office began receiving anonymous packages.
Documents.
Photographs.
Audio files.
Everything connected to Daniel.
But some of the files appeared altered.
Edited.
Manufactured.
The public couldn't tell which evidence was real.
The media exploded.
Half the city believed Ava.
Half believed Daniel.
Online commentators dissected every word she had ever said.
Old school photos appeared.
Old social media posts.
Ava's private journal was leaked.
The worst pages.
The pages she had never shown anyone.
She stared at them on a television screen.
Her mother turned it off.
Ava began crying.
"They're using my own words against me."
Elena knelt beside her.
"We know the truth."
"But everyone else doesn't."
Claire entered the room.
"Then we make them know."
Ava looked at her.
"How?"
Claire placed something on the table.
A USB drive.
"Victor gave me this."
Hale immediately looked up.
"What is it?"
"Insurance."
Claire handed it over.
"He said that if Daniel ever activated Phase Three, this should be released."
Hale plugged it into an isolated computer.
A single folder appeared.
ORIGINALS
Inside were recordings.
Unedited.
Raw.
Hundreds.
Names.
Dates.
Conversations.
There was one file labeled:
THE NIGHT CLAIRE LEFT.
Hale opened it.
Daniel's voice.
Another man's voice.
Then Claire.
The recording was incomplete.
But one sentence came through clearly.
Daniel said:
"Once Ava turns eighteen, we finish this."
Ava's stomach dropped.
Claire closed her eyes.
Hale paused the recording.
Then asked:
"What does 'finish this' mean?"
Nobody knew.
They searched the files.
Another recording.
A different conversation.
Daniel speaking again.
"Her mother will be blamed."
Another voice.
"And the girl?"
Daniel answered:
"Nobody believes girls who change their stories."
Elena froze.
"That was planned."
Hale nodded.
"Years in advance."
Then the final file opened automatically.
No title.
No date.
Just a timestamp.
The video showed Daniel standing alone in a dark room.
He looked directly into the camera.
And spoke as if he knew someone would eventually watch it.
"If you're seeing this..."
He smiled.
"...then Ava finally told her mother."
May you like
He paused.
"And that means the last part of the plan has already started."
