Chapter 17 - The Mercer FamilyThe Mercer family secret went back thirty years.

Daniel's father had operated a private intelligence company.

Officially, it provided risk management.

Unofficially, it collected information.

Blackmail.

Leverage.

Political favors.

Daniel had inherited the system.

Then expanded it.

Victor had been recruited young.

He helped build the surveillance network.

Claire had discovered it.

That was why she had been targeted.

Not because Daniel hated her.

Because she knew what the family really was.

Ava struggled to understand.

"My father didn't start this."

"No," Hale said.

"He inherited it."

Elena stared at the evidence.

"Then why me?"

Claire looked at her.

"Because you were never supposed to know."

Ava frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Claire hesitated.

"Your mother accidentally saw something years ago."

Elena searched her memory.

"I don't remember."

"You were looking for tax documents."

Elena suddenly stopped.

The memory returned.

A locked office.

A folder.

A list of names.

Daniel had walked in.

He had taken the folder.

He had told her it was business.

She had believed him.

"Those weren't tax documents."

"No."

"What were they?"

"Names of people Daniel controlled."

Elena's face went pale.

"He married me because of that?"

Claire didn't answer.

The silence did.

Ava felt sick.

"Did he ever love Mom?"

Claire looked at her.

"I don't know."

That answer hurt.

Then Hale discovered something.

A family trust.

Created before Ava was born.

Ava was the beneficiary.

Not Elena.

Ava.

The trust contained millions.

But there was a condition.

If Ava ever accused Daniel publicly before the age of twenty-one, control of the trust transferred to a third party.

That third party was named.

Victor Lane.

Ava stared.

"Victor."

Hale nodded.

"He wanted you alive."

Claire whispered:

"That's why Daniel feared him."

Ava suddenly understood.

Victor hadn't just been helping Claire.

He had been protecting Ava.

But why fake his death?

To disappear from Daniel's system.

Then Hale opened another file.

A recent transaction.

The trust had been moved.

Three days ago.

To a new account.

Ava's name.

No co-signer.

No restriction.

Someone had unlocked it.

Claire looked confused.

"Victor."

Ava whispered:

"He knew I'd speak."

Hale nodded.

"And he wanted you to have the means to survive."

Elena's eyes filled.

Then the detective's phone rang.

This time, the call was from the courthouse.

Daniel had filed an emergency motion.

He claimed Ava had been psychologically manipulated.

He requested temporary guardianship over her.

At nineteen.

Impossible under normal circumstances.

But Daniel had powerful allies.

Hale stared at the paperwork.

"They're trying to reverse the case."

Ava's breathing became shallow.

"Can they?"

"Not easily."

"But?"

Hale looked at her.

"They don't need to prove Daniel is innocent."

He paused.

"They only need to create enough doubt."

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Daniel standing outside the courthouse.

Alive.

Smiling.

And beside him stood Martin Shaw.

Ava stared.

Her mother whispered:

"Martin wasn't kidnapped."

Hale's face hardened.

"No."

"He switched sides."

Ava looked at the screen.

Daniel's smile was almost peaceful.

Then another message appeared.
