Chapter 13 - The Escape MapThe lake house was surrounded by police before dawn.

They entered through three sides.

The basement tunnel was exactly where Claire remembered.

A narrow passage carved through concrete.

At the end was a steel door.

Beyond it:

An underground garage.

Empty.

Except for tire marks.

Fresh.

Hale crouched beside them.

"How long?"

One officer checked.

"Maybe an hour."

Ava looked around.

On the wall was a large map.

Cities.

Airports.

Highways.

Ports.

Red lines connected them.

Claire stared at it.

"That's not an escape map."

"What is it?"

"It's a distribution map."

Hale looked closer.

The lines weren't routes.

They connected people.

Names were written beside them.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Executives.

Police.

Politicians.

Journalists.

Daniel had built an entire network.

And at the center was one name.

Ava Mercer.

Hale's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

Claire stepped closer.

"He wasn't trying to run."

"Then what?"

"Move the pressure."

Ava stared at the map.

Every path eventually connected back to her.

"This was always about me."

Claire looked at her.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Hale found a hidden drawer in the desk.

Inside was a file.

A.M. / FINAL

Ava's hands shook.

Hale opened it.

It contained medical records.

School records.

Psychological evaluations.

Statements from teachers.

Even childhood photographs.

All collected over years.

Every weakness.

Every fear.

Every mistake.

And at the end was a draft petition requesting that Ava be declared psychologically unstable.

Elena stared at the papers.

"He was preparing to have her committed."

Hale nodded.

Ava felt dizzy.

"He wanted people to think I couldn't be trusted."

Claire whispered:

"Because if you ever told the truth, nobody would believe you."

A sound echoed through the tunnel.

Metal.

A door closing.

The team turned.

Someone was escaping through the far end.

Hale ran.

Ava followed before anyone could stop her.

They emerged onto a forest road.

A black SUV accelerated away.

Hale shouted.

An officer fired a flare toward the road.

The vehicle disappeared into the trees.

But someone had left something behind.

A phone.

Ava picked it up.

Hale took it from her.

The screen was unlocked.

One message.

Sent thirty seconds ago.

YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

Hale frowned.

Another message appeared.

LOOK AT THE WOMAN WHO ALWAYS COMES HOME AT 6.

Ava stared at the screen.

Her mother whispered:

"What does that mean?"

Ava looked at her.

Then slowly understood.

The message wasn't about Elena.

It was about someone else.

Someone whose schedule Daniel had tracked for years.

Someone who always arrived at the apartment after 6 p.m.

The neighbor.

Mrs. Dalton.

The woman who had always smiled at Ava.

The woman who had brought her soup when she was sick.

The woman who had once told Elena:

"I hear everything through those walls."

Hale immediately made a call.

"Locate Mrs. Dalton."

May you like

The response came thirty seconds later.

"She's missing."
