PART 2 — THE QUEEN'S FINAL SECRET The cathedral stood frozen as the old nun placed the worn leather diary upon the altar. "I promised the queen," she said softly. "Only open this... after the mask came off." King Aldric's face turned pale. Richard opened the diary. Inside was a letter. Written in the queen's own hand. "My dearest Eleanor... If you are reading this... Your father has already failed." The king closed his eyes. The queen's words continued. "There was no curse. But there was a prophecy." The guests leaned closer. "It said your beauty would unite kingdoms... Or destroy one built upon lies." She wrote, "Your father believed hiding you would change destiny." "He never understood..." "Fear creates the future it tries to escape." Then came the final revelation. "I was dying." "The physicians gave me only months." "So I made your father promise to remove the mask when you became a woman." "But after I died..." "He broke that promise." Eleanor slowly looked toward the king. "You kept me hidden..." "...not because Mother asked." "...because you couldn't let go." The king collapsed to his knees. "I couldn't lose you too." His voice cracked. "Your mother died." "The kingdom wanted your hand." "I was terrified someone would take you away." Richard stepped beside Eleanor. He gently took her trembling hand. "You were never cursed." "You were never the kingdom's property." "You were simply a daughter." Tears filled every eye. But before anyone could speak... The cathedral bells began ringing wildly. Messengers rushed inside. "The eastern army has crossed the border!" "The neighboring king demands Princess Eleanor immediately..." "...or he declares war." The prophecy had begun. / Chapter 1 / 2 6
