PART 2 — The Price of Kindness

The room remained frozen after the lawyer finished speaking.

Mauricio’s chair scraped violently against the polished marble floor as he stood up.

“This is illegal,” he snapped. “My father was sick. He was manipulated. I want every document reviewed again.”

Attorney Héctor Salinas didn’t react. He calmly closed the folder.

“Everything was verified over six months. Medical evaluations. Psychological capacity tests. Multiple witnesses.”

Valeria stood near the glass wall, still in her restaurant uniform, feeling as if the floor beneath her had disappeared. Her voice finally broke through.

“I don’t understand… I only served him coffee.”

Mauricio laughed coldly.

“That’s exactly the problem. You think kindness is enough to inherit millions?”

His wife leaned forward, eyes sharp.

“Tell us the truth,” she said. “How long did you plan this? Did you know who he was?”

Valeria shook her head quickly. “I didn’t. He was just… Don Alejandro.”

The attorney raised a hand, stopping the tension before it escalated further.

“There is one condition attached to the inheritance,” he said.

The room went silent again.

Mauricio narrowed his eyes. “Of course there is.”

Héctor opened the final page.

“Valeria Ortiz must continue operating the restaurant for one full year without selling it, modifying ownership structure, or transferring control. If she fails, everything reverts to the Garza family estate.”

A long pause.

Then Mauricio smiled for the first time.

“So she’s a caretaker,” he said. “Not an owner.”

But Héctor’s next words erased that confidence instantly.

“And,” he added, “any interference, intimidation, or attempt to force her resignation will trigger immediate legal review of the entire Garza corporate structure.”

Mauricio slowly sat back down.

For the first time, uncertainty entered his eyes.
