Chapter 9 - THE KEY BENEATH THE CHURCHThe church had been closed for eleven years.

Its windows were boarded.
Its stone walls were cracked.
There was no reason for a ten-year-old boy to know what was buried underneath it.
Yet Caleb walked through the old graveyard without hesitation.
He stopped beside a weathered stone.
There was no name.
Only a cross.
He knelt.
His fingers traced the bottom edge.
“Here.”
I dug with my hands.
Nothing.
Then Rachel found a loose stone.
Under it was a metal box.
Inside was another key.
Different from the brass one.
Longer.
Silver.
Engraved with the same cross.
Daniel stared.
“This is a bank vault key.”
“What bank?”
He turned it over.
A number was stamped on the back.
He recognized it immediately.
“Private reserve facility.”
I frowned.
“Where?”
“Manhattan.”
“Can we open it?”
“Not without Caleb.”
We left before dawn.
At the bank, an elderly manager met us in a private room.
He took one look at the key.
Then at Caleb.
His hands began to shake.
“You shouldn't have brought him.”
“Why?”
“He is the account holder.”
I stared.
“His name is on the account?”
The manager nodded.
“Since birth.”
He brought out an old ledger.
The account balance made no sense.
Sixty-two million.
Plus another account.
One hundred and twelve million.
A third.
Four hundred million.
Daniel stared.
“These aren't trust accounts.”
“No.”
“What are they?”
The manager lowered his voice.
“Escrow accounts.”
“For what?”
“To hold money until the ledger is released.”
“Released to whom?”
He looked at Caleb.
“To whoever controls the information.”
I felt sick.
“Julian was laundering money.”
“No.”
The manager shook his head.
“He was hiding it.”
“That distinction doesn't help.”
He handed Caleb a biometric scanner.
“Finger.”
Caleb looked at me.
I nodded.
He touched the scanner.
The safe opened.
Inside was a single envelope.
Not a ledger.
A letter.
From Julian.
Caleb's name was written on it.
I opened it.
Caleb,
By the time you read this, you will have learned that your mother did not abandon you. You will also hate the man who raised you. You should not.
I stopped.
Thomas Hale.
I kept reading.
Your father made enemies. Your grandfather made laws for them. Your stepfather was chosen because he was innocent enough to survive.
My hands went cold.
The truth is simple. You are the only witness left who cannot be bought.
Then the final paragraph.
When the time comes, choose between blood and the man who raised you.
I looked up.
Rachel was crying.
Daniel was pale.
Ethan stared toward the security camera.
Then it went dark.
Every monitor in the bank shut off.
The manager stepped backward.
“They cut the power.”
A second later, the vault doors slammed shut.
Caleb was inside with me.
Rachel screamed from outside.
“Thomas!”
I grabbed Caleb.
The vault was sealing.
Then Julian's voice came through the intercom.
“Hello, Thomas.”
I stared at the speaker.
“You're alive.”
“I have always been alive.”
“You took my wife.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She knows where the final piece is.”
“What piece?”
Julian laughed.
“The one thing your attorney has never seen.”
I looked at Daniel through the glass.
Julian continued.
“Ask him who really signed your adoption.”
I turned.
May you like
Daniel closed his eyes.
And I realized he already knew the answer.
