Chapter 10 - THE SIGNATURE“Daniel.”

He would not look at me.
“Who signed my adoption?”
“Thomas…”
“Who?”
Rachel stared at him.
Ethan swore.
Julian laughed through the speaker.
“You should have asked that years ago.”
I pressed the intercom.
“Tell me.”
Daniel finally lifted his eyes.
“It wasn't you.”
“What?”
“You didn't legally adopt Caleb.”
The words hit like a punch.
“Then who did?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father.”
I shook my head.
“My father had been dead for years.”
“Exactly.”
I looked at Caleb.
He was terrified.
“Then whose name is on the record?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Your father's legal identity.”
“What does that mean?”
“Forgery.”
I stared at him.
“So my marriage…”
“Was manipulated.”
“The adoption?”
“Manipulated.”
“The trust?”
“Manipulated.”
“My entire life?”
Julian's voice returned.
“Not entirely.”
I hated the sound of him.
“Then what was real?”
He answered.
“Your love for the boy.”
Silence.
Then the vault lights turned red.
A countdown appeared.
00:09:58
Daniel shouted,
“Thomas!”
Julian said,
“Ten minutes.”
“For what?”
“To decide whether Caleb leaves with you.”
I looked at my son.
His face was wet with tears.
“Daddy, don't leave me.”
I pulled him close.
“I won't.”
Julian's voice softened.
“You cannot save everyone.”
I answered,
“Watch me.”
The timer continued.
Rachel appeared on the screen.
She was in a room somewhere underground.
Claire sat beside her.
Both were bound.
Julian stood between them.
“You have a choice.”
He held up two photographs.
“One is your wife.”
“One is your son's mother.”
“Only one leaves.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Julian continued.
“Choose.”
Rachel shook her head.
“Don't listen to him.”
Claire screamed,
“Thomas, take Caleb and go!”
I looked at Daniel.
“There has to be another way.”
“There is.”
“What?”
Daniel handed me a USB drive.
“Your father built a failsafe.”
“What kind?”
“If the trust is compromised, the entire ledger gets sent to federal authorities.”
“Why didn't we use it?”
“Because it requires one thing.”
“What?”
“Your consent.”
I looked at the screen.
Julian smiled.
“You will destroy everything.”
“If I activate the failsafe.”
“Yes.”
“Your money.”
“Gone.”
“Your network.”
“Destroyed.”
“The people you own.”
“Exposed.”
“And my family?”
Julian paused.
“Uncertain.”
I looked at the timer.
Seven minutes.
Then I remembered the empty plate.
Caleb standing alone.
Claire saying, I cook for my own children.
I knew what she had been doing.
She had been trying to make him feel disposable.
Because if Caleb believed he did not belong, he would never fight for what was his.
I inserted the USB.
The system asked:
AUTHORIZE RELEASE?
I pressed YES.
Julian's smile disappeared.
“You have no idea what you are doing.”
I smiled.
“For the first time in ten years, I do.”
May you like
The screen went black.
Then every bank alarm in the building began to scream.
