Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING FROM THE NIGHT CALEB WAS BORNI wanted to burn the photograph.

Instead, I put it in a plastic evidence sleeve.

Daniel watched me.

“You're thinking like a lawyer now.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I'm thinking like a father.”

Rachel stepped toward me.

“You cannot take Caleb to him.”

“He has Claire.”

“He took her.”

“She helped him.”

Rachel shook her head.

“That doesn't mean she deserves to die.”

I did not answer.

Because she was right.

And because I still hated myself for admitting it.

Ethan opened another folder.

“There is one thing Julian is afraid of.”

“What?”

“Proof that Rachel never abandoned Caleb.”

“That should already be enough.”

“It isn't.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian had every official record altered.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“That is why the court accepted the abandonment claim.”

“What proof do we need?”

Ethan took out a small memory card.

“This.”

We watched the video on Daniel's laptop.

A hospital room.

A younger Rachel.

Newborn Caleb.

A nurse.

Then Julian entered.

He stood beside the bed.

“You won't see him again.”

Rachel cried.

“He is my son.”

“He is an asset.”

The video froze.

The timestamp read ten years ago.

I stared.

“Where did you get this?”

“The nurse gave it to me before she disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

Ethan nodded.

“Everyone who knew the truth vanished.”

Then the video continued.

Rachel handed the baby to the nurse.

Julian leaned in.

“Claire will raise him.”

A younger Claire appeared in the doorway.

She looked horrified.

Julian handed her a folder.

“You know what happens if you refuse.”

Claire whispered,

“What about Rachel?”

Julian looked at the nurse.

“Make it look like she died.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire's voice came from the doorway.

“I never killed her.”

We turned.

She stood there.

Bruised.

Blood on her sleeve.

Alive.

Ethan rushed toward her.

“Where is Julian?”

She shook her head.

“I escaped.”

“From where?”

She looked at me.

“The vault.”

My pulse stopped.

“What's inside?”

“A recording.”

“What kind?”

“The one thing Julian cannot destroy.”

“What is it?”

Claire looked at Caleb.

“His original birth record.”

“That's all?”

“No.”

She walked closer.

“Julian kept one secret from everyone.”

Rachel stepped forward.

“What secret?”

Claire looked at her.

“He never intended to give Caleb the trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because the trust isn't really a trust.”

“What is it?”

Claire's voice dropped.

“It's a ledger.”

I looked at her.

“A financial ledger?”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“Names.”

“What names?”

“Politicians. Judges. Police chiefs. Bankers. CEOs.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Evidence?”

Claire nodded.

“Bribes.”

The room went silent.

Rachel looked at Caleb.

“Why would Julian put that in his son's trust?”

“Because he knew that once Caleb turned twenty-one, nobody could legally control it.”

I understood.

“The boy isn't the inheritance.”

Claire shook her head.

“He is the lock.”

“And Julian?”

She looked toward the basement.

“He has been using Caleb's identity to keep the ledger hidden.”

I stared at my wife.

“Why did he choose me?”

She hesitated.

“Because you are the only man Julian believed would love Caleb.”

That sentence broke something in me.

She continued.

“And because you have never understood how much money your family actually controls.”

I frowned.

“My family?”

She nodded.

“Your father wasn't just a businessman.”

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Thomas…”

I turned.

He had another document in his hand.

A corporate registration.

The name at the top made me stop.

HALE FAMILY TRUST.

Beneficiary:

Thomas Hale.

Trust holder:

Caleb Cross Hale.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?”

He lowered his voice.

“Your father and Julian Cross were partners.”

I stared at him.

“They were enemies.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They built the system together.”

Then a phone buzzed.

Caleb's.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.
