Chapter 8 - WHAT MY SON REMEMBEREDCaleb was asleep.

Or so I thought.

He sat on the edge of the bed holding the phone.

His face had changed.

He looked older.

Not physically.

In the way children sometimes do when they suddenly understand something adults have been hiding.

“What do you remember?”

He looked at me.

“The room.”

“The white room?”

He nodded.

“There was a window.”

“What did you see?”

“Trees.”

“Anything else?”

“A red door.”

I exchanged a look with Rachel.

Ethan pulled out a map.

“The old Cross estate had a red service door.”

“Where?”

“Behind the greenhouse.”

Caleb spoke again.

“There was a woman.”

Rachel moved closer.

“What woman?”

“She had blood on her dress.”

Rachel froze.

“Did you see her face?”

Caleb nodded.

“Mom.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

“That wasn't me.”

“Yes, it was.”

“No.”

“You were younger.”

Rachel's eyes filled.

She crouched.

“Caleb, tell me what happened.”

He took a breath.

“You were crying.”

“What did you say?”

“You said, ‘Run.’”

Rachel broke.

“I told you to run?”

Caleb nodded.

“Then Dad came.”

“Julian?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He hit the wall.”

Caleb pointed.

“There was a hidden door.”

My skin prickled.

“What happened next?”

“He put something in the wall.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

Then he looked directly at me.

“But I remember where it is.”

We left immediately.

The old Cross estate had been abandoned for years.

The greenhouse was collapsing.

The red door still existed.

Behind it was a narrow corridor.

Caleb walked ahead.

No hesitation.

He stopped at a brick wall.

“Here.”

Ethan touched the bricks.

One moved.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small black box.

Daniel stared.

“This is it.”

“What is it?”

“A recorder.”

I pressed the button.

Julian's voice filled the corridor.

“If you're hearing this, Caleb is old enough.”

The recording continued.

“You were never supposed to know the truth.”

Rachel began to shake.

Julian said,

“Your mother did not abandon you.”

Silence.

Then:

“She was taken because she discovered what I built.”

I stared at the box.

“What did you build?”

The recording answered.

“A network.”

Names followed.

Hundreds.

Payments.

Dates.

Meetings.

Judges.

Police officials.

Corporate executives.

Politicians.

The scale was enormous.

This was not a family scandal.

It was a machine.

Then Julian said something that made my blood freeze.

“Thomas Hale was selected because his family already owned the legal infrastructure needed to protect the ledger.”

I stared at Daniel.

He looked sick.

Julian continued.

“Thomas does not know.”

Then another voice appeared.

My father's.

I hadn't heard it in twenty years.

“You're certain the boy will remain with Thomas?”

Julian answered,

“As long as Claire follows instructions.”

Claire started crying.

My father said,

“And the mother?”

Julian replied,

“She disappears.”

Rachel covered her face.

Then the recording changed.

A child began crying.

Caleb's voice.

Ten years younger.

Julian spoke softly.

“Tell me where the key is.”

The child cried.

“I don't know.”

“Where is the ledger?”

“I don't know.”

Then Claire's voice.

“Julian, stop.”

A slap.

The recording ended.

Caleb stared at the box.

“He made me forget.”

Rachel hugged him.

I let her.

Then the warehouse lights outside flickered.

Ethan looked through the broken window.

Cars.

Five.

No headlights.

“They found us.”

Daniel grabbed the ledger.

“We need to move.”

I looked at Caleb.

“Can you remember the rest?”

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“The vault isn't under our house.”

“Then where?”

He pointed toward the hill.

“Under the church.”

Rachel went pale.

“What church?”

May you like

Caleb whispered,

“The one where Dad buried the key.”
