Chapter 6: The Woman Who Chose the Monster

Marcus didn't move.
The barrel of Victoria's suppressed pistol remained fixed on his chest.
The underground archive was silent except for Adrian Cole's ragged breathing.
Blood spread across the concrete beneath him.
Detective Reeves slowly adjusted his aim toward Victoria.
"Drop the weapon."
Victoria didn't even look at him.
"If you fire..."
"...he dies first."
Her finger rested lightly on the trigger.
Steady.
Controlled.
Marcus realized something unsettling.
She wasn't panicking.
She had rehearsed this moment.
Sarah.
Leo.
The thought hit Marcus like a bolt of lightning.
"Where's my family?"
Victoria finally looked into his eyes.
"They're alive."
Marcus searched her face for deception.
She looked exhausted.
Not triumphant.
Not cruel.
Simply... tired.
"You swear?"
"I swear."
Marcus believed she meant it.
But he no longer knew whether her promises were worth anything.
Behind Victoria, Adrian Cole laughed weakly.
A wet cough interrupted him.
"You still protect him..."
Victoria turned sharply.
"Shut up."
Cole smiled despite the blood on his lips.
"Thirty years..."
"...and you still can't tell him."
Victoria's jaw tightened.
"One more word..."
"I'll finish it."
Cole nodded.
"I know."
"You always do."
Marcus frowned.
"What is he talking about?"
Neither of them answered.
The silence felt heavier than the gun.
Detective Reeves spoke calmly.
"Victoria."
"This is over."
She smiled without humor.
"No."
"It ended years ago."
"You people are only reading the final chapter."
Marcus's heartbeat quickened.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria's eyes never left his.
"You think I'm the villain."
Marcus answered quietly.
"You forged Mom's will."
"Yes."
"You drugged her."
A painful pause.
"...Yes."
"You stole the inheritance."
"...Yes."
"You kidnapped Leo."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"...Yes."
Marcus's voice cracked.
"Then how can you stand there pretending you're not the villain?"
For the first time...
She looked like she might break.
Adrian Cole suddenly coughed violently.
Dark blood splattered across the floor.
He looked at Marcus.
"Ask her..."
"...what happened the night you were born."
Marcus frowned.
"I was adopted."
Cole smiled faintly.
"Were you?"
Victoria screamed.
"ENOUGH!"
The sound echoed through the underground chamber.
Everyone froze.
She was shaking now.
Not with fear.
With rage.
Marcus stared at her.
"What happened?"
Victoria lowered the pistol a fraction.
Then raised it again.
"You don't want the answer."
"I do."
"No."
"I deserve it."
She laughed bitterly.
"Nobody deserves that story."
Cole whispered,
"He deserves the truth."
Victoria spun toward him.
Without hesitation...
She fired.
The suppressed shot sounded like a sharp cough.
The bullet struck Cole's shoulder.
He collapsed sideways.
Marcus instinctively stepped forward.
Victoria immediately aimed back at him.
"Don't."
Marcus stopped.
Hart knelt beside Cole.
Trying desperately to stop the bleeding.
Cole grabbed the old lawyer's wrist.
"No..."
"...save your strength."
Hart ignored him.
"You aren't dying here."
Cole smiled sadly.
"I've earned worse."
Marcus couldn't take it anymore.
He looked directly at Victoria.
"You said everyone dies if I leave."
"Who?"
She hesitated.
Then quietly answered.
"The people above Cole."
Marcus frowned.
"There are more?"
Victoria laughed.
"So many more."
She slowly reached into her coat with her free hand.
Reeves immediately shouted,
"Don't!"
Victoria ignored him.
Instead of another weapon...
She removed a small black remote.
One red light blinked on its surface.
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
"No..."
She held it up.
"There are explosives throughout this building."
Every officer in the room stiffened.
Reeves narrowed his eyes.
"Dead man's switch?"
Victoria nodded.
"If I release this button..."
"...everything above us disappears."
Marcus looked upward.
The bakery.
Police officers.
Evidence.
Everyone.
Gone.
Reeves lowered his weapon slightly.
"What do you want?"
Victoria answered immediately.
"Marcus."
Marcus frowned.
"What about me?"
"You come with me."
"Alone."
"And everyone lives."
Marcus laughed once.
A hollow sound.
"You kidnapped my son."
"Yes."
"You stole our mother's life."
"...Yes."
"You destroyed this family."
Victoria whispered,
"I know."
"And now you expect me to trust you?"
Tears rolled down her face.
"I don't."
"I expect you to love Leo."
Marcus's anger faltered.
She continued.
"If you stay here..."
"...they'll never stop."
"They'll kill Sarah."
"They'll kill Leo."
"They'll kill you."
She looked toward the dying Adrian Cole.
"And then they'll erase every piece of evidence you've found."
Cole nodded weakly.
"She's telling the truth."
Marcus stared.
"You expect me to believe him?"
Cole managed a painful smile.
"No."
"I expect you to believe history."
Benjamin Hart suddenly stood.
"I've hidden for twenty years."
Everyone looked at him.
"I've watched witnesses disappear."
"Judges retire overnight."
"Police investigations vanish."
"Entire court files burn in accidental fires."
He looked directly at Marcus.
"I thought Victoria was protecting herself."
A tear rolled down his weathered face.
"I was wrong."
Marcus whispered,
"Then who was she protecting?"
Hart answered with one sentence.
"You."
The room fell silent.
Marcus slowly turned toward his sister.
She couldn't meet his eyes.
Marcus remembered every strange thing over the past five years.
Victoria refusing to let him travel.
Insisting he stay at the estate.
Watching him constantly.
Controlling his finances.
Never letting him investigate old family records.
At the time...
It had felt like imprisonment.
Now...
Another possibility emerged.
What if she had been keeping him somewhere people couldn't find him?
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"You still forged everything."
Victoria nodded.
"I did."
"You still poisoned Mom."
"I stole medication."
"But I never intended to kill her."
Marcus's voice hardened.
"Intent doesn't change the outcome."
"I know."
She closed her eyes.
"I've lived with that every day."
Suddenly...
A phone rang.
Not Marcus's.
Not Reeves'.
Victoria slowly removed another phone from her pocket.
The screen displayed only one word.
DIRECTOR
Her face turned white.
Marcus watched her answer.
She didn't speak.
She only listened.
Whoever was on the other end talked for nearly twenty seconds.
Then the call ended.
Victoria lowered the phone.
Her hand trembled for the first time.
Marcus stepped forward.
"What happened?"
She looked at him with empty eyes.
"They found the safe-deposit box."
Marcus's breath caught.
The brass key.
First National Bank.
Someone else had reached it first.
Victoria whispered,
"We're too late."
Before anyone could react...
Every light in the underground archive suddenly went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the room.
A second later...
Emergency red lights flickered on.
Somewhere deep inside the tunnel, a mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Containment protocol initiated."
Then another voice followed.
Cold.
Calm.
Unfamiliar.
"Victoria Ashford... thank you for leading us to Marcus."
Victoria's face drained of all color.
She whispered only two words.
"They're here."
At that exact moment, heavy steel doors began sliding shut at both ends of the underground chamber.
The sound of locking bolts echoed like thunder.
They weren't being rescued.
They weren't escaping.
May you like
They had all just become prisoners.
