Chapter 11: The Night Everything Burned

The archive fell into absolute silence.

Marcus stared at the black envelope in the Director's hand.

His heartbeat pounded so loudly he barely heard himself speak.

"You were there..."

"...when my father died?"

The Director nodded once.

"Yes."

Marcus took one slow step forward.

"Did you kill him?"

The Director looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

Marcus didn't believe him.

"You expect me to trust anything you say?"

"I don't."

The Director's voice remained calm.

"I expect you to verify it."

He held up the sealed envelope.

"That's why your father wrote this."

Marcus looked toward Benjamin Hart.

The elderly lawyer slowly nodded.

"The handwriting..."

"It looks authentic."

Victoria's eyes never left the envelope.

"I've searched for that letter for twenty years."

The Director smiled faintly.

"I know."

Marcus extended his hand.

"Give it to me."

The Director made no movement.

"First..."

"...I want you to hear the truth."

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"The truth from the man who destroyed countless lives?"

The Director sighed.

"Truth doesn't become false simply because the speaker is hated."

Detective Reeves stepped beside Marcus.

"Talk."

"But if this is another game..."

The Director interrupted.

"It isn't."

He slowly placed the envelope on a nearby desk.

Then stepped back.

"I won't touch it again."

Marcus hesitated.

The envelope was only a few feet away.

No tricks.

No sudden movement.

He picked it up.

The paper was yellow with age.

The seal remained unbroken.

Across the front, elegant blue ink read:

For Michael. If he survives.

Marcus's fingers trembled.

He carefully broke the seal.

Inside...

Three folded pages.

And a photograph.

He unfolded the photograph first.

His breath caught.

It showed a young man standing beside a woman holding newborn twins.

The man looked strikingly familiar.

Not because Marcus remembered him.

Because Marcus had spent his entire life seeing that face in the mirror.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same jawline.

His biological father.

Behind the photograph, written in neat handwriting:

Daniel, Anna, Michael, Emma.

Marcus whispered,

"My family..."

He unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was precise.

Steady.

As though the writer refused to let fear affect his pen.

My son,

If this letter reaches you, then I have failed.

Marcus swallowed hard.

The first sentence already felt painfully familiar.

Both fathers had written to him expecting they might die before he knew the truth.

He continued reading aloud.

Never blame the people who raised you.

Richard and Eleanor Ashford saved your life.

Marcus looked toward Victoria.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

The next paragraph stunned everyone.

I asked Richard to take you.

Marcus stopped.

The room became silent.

"What?"

Benjamin Hart looked shocked.

The Director simply nodded.

Marcus continued.

The attack on our home had already begun.

Emma and I escaped through the study.

Your mother carried you.

Richard arrived exactly when I hoped he would.

Marcus looked up.

"My father knew Richard?"

The Director answered quietly.

"They were university roommates."

Marcus blinked.

"What?"

"They built the first prototype of the Beaumont Cipher together."

Marcus looked back at the letter.

Richard wanted to stay and fight.

I refused.

One family had to survive.

Marcus's hands began shaking.

I gave him you.

Marcus couldn't continue for several seconds.

Sarah quietly rested her hand against his back.

Eventually...

He forced himself onward.

If you are reading this...

Richard kept his promise.

Marcus smiled through tears.

"He did."

The next paragraph changed everything.

The people attacking us weren't led by the Director.

Marcus slowly lowered the page.

The Director remained silent.

Marcus continued reading.

He arrived too late.

Detective Reeves frowned.

Marcus read aloud.

He tried to stop them.

Silence.

Marcus looked toward the silver-haired man.

"No..."

The Director finally spoke.

"I told you."

"I wasn't hunting your family."

Marcus continued.

Daniel Beaumont and Arthur Hale argued for nearly ten minutes before the shooting began.

Marcus froze.

"Arthur..."

The Director quietly nodded.

"My real name."

Arthur Hale.

Not "Director."

A man.

Not merely a title.

Benjamin Hart whispered,

"I've never heard that name."

Arthur gave a tired smile.

"Very few have."

Marcus continued reading.

Arthur still believed the cipher should never exist.

Everyone looked toward Arthur.

He spoke softly.

"I warned Daniel."

"For years."

Marcus frowned.

"You opposed him?"

Arthur nodded.

"The cipher was too dangerous."

Marcus looked confused.

"Then why chase it afterward?"

Arthur answered before Marcus returned to the letter.

"Because someone else wanted it even more."

Marcus read the final page.

If Arthur survives...

Listen to him before judging him.

Marcus stopped again.

His biological father had trusted Arthur.

At least enough to write those words.

Then came the final sentence.

The real enemy isn't the man called Director.

It's the people who gave him that title.

Marcus slowly lowered the letter.

No one spoke.

For nearly a full minute.

Finally...

Detective Reeves broke the silence.

"Who gave you the title?"

Arthur looked toward the ceiling.

As though seeing ghosts.

"A council."

Marcus frowned.

"How many?"

Arthur answered quietly.

"Twelve."

Victoria whispered,

"They're still alive."

Arthur nodded.

"Eleven."

Marcus caught the number immediately.

"Eleven?"

Arthur looked at him.

"I've spent thirty years removing the others."

The room stared.

"You've been killing them?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"One by one."

Suddenly...

Every phone in the room buzzed simultaneously.

Reeves checked his screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"What is it?" Marcus asked.

Reeves slowly turned the phone around.

A live news broadcast filled the display.

Across the bottom of the screen flashed a breaking headline:

INTERNATIONAL ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR ELEVEN UNKNOWN INDIVIDUALS AFTER MASSIVE DATA LEAK

Emma had done it.

The files were public.

The hunt had begun.

Arthur looked at the headline.

Then smiled for the first time.

A genuine smile.

"It finally started."

Before anyone could respond...

A distant rumble echoed through the tunnels.

Not an explosion.

Engines.

Heavy engines.

Several vehicles.

Approaching from above.

Reeves moved toward the entrance.

He listened carefully.

Then turned back.

"They're here."

Marcus frowned.

"Who?"

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"The remaining eleven."

He looked directly at Marcus.

"They're not coming for me anymore."

"They're coming..."

May you like

"...for the last Beaumont."
