Chapter 5: The Underground Truth

The second explosion sent a shower of concrete crashing down the staircase.

Marcus instinctively pulled Benjamin Hart behind one of the steel filing cabinets.

A deafening rumble echoed through the underground chamber.

When the dust finally settled...

The only staircase leading back to the bakery had disappeared beneath tons of broken concrete.

They were trapped.

Hart closed his eyes.

"They found us."

Marcus tightened his grip on the iron pipe.

"Who?"

The old lawyer hesitated.

Then another sound answered the question.

Footsteps.

Not one pair.

Several.

Somewhere deeper inside the underground archive.

Marcus frowned.

"There isn't another entrance."

Hart looked toward the darkness.

"There is."

Marcus turned sharply.

"You said this room only had one staircase."

"I lied."

A heavy steel door slowly swung open at the far end of the chamber.

Cold air rushed through the passage behind it.

Someone had opened it from the opposite side.

One...

Two...

Three armed men stepped into the archive.

All wore black tactical clothing.

No badges.

No identifying marks.

Only identical silver rings engraved with a serpent swallowing its own tail.

Marcus had never seen the symbol before.

The man in front lowered his flashlight.

"Benjamin Hart."

His voice echoed through the room.

"You've been hiding longer than expected."

Hart quietly whispered,

"They found the tunnel..."

Marcus glanced at him.

"You know them."

"I wish I didn't."

The leader looked toward Marcus.

"So..."

"This is the boy."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"I'm not a boy."

The stranger smiled.

"Not anymore."

"But thirty-one years ago..."

"...you were."

Marcus's heartbeat skipped.

Thirty-one years.

Exactly Marcus's age.

The man knew who he was.

That wasn't random.

The leader removed a leather glove.

Across the back of his hand was a deep burn scar stretching from wrist to knuckles.

He extended his hand politely.

"My name is Adrian Cole."

Marcus didn't move.

Cole smiled.

"I wasn't expecting manners."

One of the other men began opening filing cabinets.

Another photographed documents with a handheld scanner.

They weren't searching randomly.

They knew exactly what they wanted.

Marcus looked toward Hart.

"What are they after?"

Hart answered quietly.

"Everything."

Cole wandered slowly through the room.

His fingers brushed across old shelves.

"You know..."

"...your father was much more intelligent than people realized."

Marcus remained silent.

"He hid evidence everywhere."

Cole chuckled softly.

"But eventually..."

"Every secret gets hungry."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means secrets always find someone to feed on."

Marcus suddenly remembered Leo.

"Where is my son?"

Cole looked genuinely surprised.

"Your son?"

He glanced at the others.

"No one told him?"

Marcus's stomach tightened.

"Told me what?"

Cole laughed.

"We don't have your son."

Marcus froze.

Sarah's scream.

The broken window.

The black SUV.

Victoria's phone call.

Everything pointed to her.

Cole shook his head.

"Victoria kidnapped Leo."

"We had nothing to do with it."

Marcus stared.

He couldn't tell whether the man was lying.

Cole seemed amused by his uncertainty.

"You've spent your whole life chasing the wrong monster."

Hart suddenly spoke.

"Don't believe him."

Cole smiled again.

"I've never lied to Marcus."

He looked directly into Marcus's eyes.

"But Victoria certainly has."

One of Cole's men called out.

"Found it."

He held up a thin black notebook.

Hart's face lost all color.

"No..."

Cole accepted the notebook carefully.

"There you are."

He flipped through several pages.

Then smiled.

"I've been searching for this for twenty years."

Marcus stepped forward.

"What is it?"

Cole answered without looking up.

"A client list."

Marcus frowned.

"For what?"

Cole finally met his gaze.

"For children."

Silence.

Marcus felt his blood turn cold.

Hart whispered,

"Oh God..."

Cole closed the notebook.

"Thirty-two illegal adoptions."

Marcus couldn't breathe.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

Cole continued calmly.

"Children sold."

"Names changed."

"Birth certificates altered."

Marcus's voice barely emerged.

"I was one of them?"

Cole nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus staggered backward.

"No..."

"My parents adopted me legally."

"They thought they did."

Cole's words struck like hammers.

"They paid an agency."

"The agency paid us."

Marcus looked toward Hart.

The old lawyer shook violently.

"It's true."

Marcus felt sick.

"My parents..."

"They never knew."

Hart nodded.

"They believed every document was genuine."

Marcus remembered the photograph.

The day we became whole.

His parents hadn't bought him.

They had rescued him.

Without knowing someone else had profited.

Tears blurred his vision.

"They loved me."

Cole's expression softened.

"That much is obvious."

Another explosion echoed somewhere above.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Cole looked at his watch.

"We're running out of time."

Marcus frowned.

"Time for what?"

"The police."

"They're finally entering the building."

Cole slipped the notebook into his coat.

Marcus stepped in front of him.

"You're not leaving."

Cole sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't do this."

Marcus raised the iron pipe.

"I don't care."

Cole nodded once.

Three men immediately surrounded Marcus.

Professional.

Silent.

Hart shouted,

"Marcus!"

Before Marcus could react...

A fourth voice echoed from the hidden tunnel.

"Nobody move."

Everyone turned.

Detective Daniel Reeves stepped from the darkness.

His pistol aimed directly at Adrian Cole.

Marcus blinked.

"How did you get here?"

Reeves answered without taking his eyes off Cole.

"There was another entrance exactly where your father marked on an old city utility map."

Hart looked shocked.

"You found it?"

Reeves smiled faintly.

"Your father trusted the city engineers more than lawyers."

Cole laughed.

"I always liked him."

For several seconds...

Nobody moved.

Weapons remained raised.

The archive was silent except for falling dust.

Then Cole spoke.

"Detective."

"You have no idea what's happening."

Reeves answered,

"I know enough."

"You trafficed children."

Cole shook his head.

"No."

"We supplied paperwork."

Marcus stared at him.

"What's the difference?"

Cole smiled sadly.

"The people who actually stole children..."

"...still haven't appeared."

The sentence hung in the air.

Even Reeves hesitated.

Cole continued,

"You've uncovered one layer."

"There are several more beneath it."

Suddenly...

A single gunshot echoed through the chamber.

Everyone froze.

Cole looked down.

A dark stain spread across his white shirt.

For a moment...

Nobody understood.

Then a second shot rang out.

One of Cole's men collapsed instantly.

The bullets hadn't come from Reeves.

Or Marcus.

They had come from the tunnel behind Cole.

A shadow stepped into the light.

A woman.

Holding a suppressed pistol.

Victoria.

She lowered the weapon with frightening calm.

Cole smiled weakly despite the blood spreading across his chest.

"I wondered..."

"...how long it would take."

Victoria's face showed no emotion.

"You talk too much."

Marcus stared at his sister in disbelief.

"You shot them."

Victoria looked at him.

"No."

"I silenced them."

Then she pointed the pistol directly at Marcus.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

"But if you leave this room alive..."

May you like

"...everyone we love dies."
