Chapter 13: The Choice Above Ground

Marcus burst through the shattered stairwell just as another explosion ripped through the front of the bakery.
Smoke rolled across the floor.
Broken bricks and splintered wood rained from the ceiling.
Outside...
Chaos.
Police sirens screamed from every direction.
Black SUVs blocked both ends of the street.
Three helicopters hovered overhead, their searchlights cutting through the dust like giant white blades.
Marcus barely noticed any of it.
His eyes found only one person.
Leo.
His seven-year-old son stood in the middle of the empty street, clutching the worn stuffed fox against his chest.
"Daddy?"
Leo's small voice carried across the smoke.
Marcus ran.
A rifle cracked.
The bullet shattered the pavement less than a foot from Marcus's shoe.
Another shot followed immediately.
Detective Reeves burst through the bakery entrance behind him.
"SNIPER!"
He tackled Marcus sideways.
A third round punched through the bakery window exactly where Marcus had been standing.
Glass exploded everywhere.
Marcus looked toward the rooftops.
Tiny flashes.
Three separate sniper positions.
Professionals.
Leo froze.
He looked terrified.
"Daddy..."
Marcus pushed himself back to his feet.
"I'M COMING!"
Another shot.
Another miss.
Someone wasn't trying to kill him.
They were slowing him down.
Arthur emerged from the bakery carrying a battered rifle.
He looked toward the rooftops only once.
"Military-grade optics."
"They're herding you."
Marcus frowned.
"Herding?"
Arthur nodded.
"They want you alive."
The First Chair's voice suddenly echoed across the street.
Not through hidden speakers this time.
A black limousine slowly rolled to a stop fifty yards away.
Its rear window lowered.
A woman in her late sixties sat inside.
Elegant gray suit.
Silver hair.
Calm smile.
She looked more like a retired university professor than the leader of a criminal empire.
"So..."
She said softly.
"Michael Beaumont."
Marcus stepped in front of Leo.
"Stay behind me."
Leo obeyed immediately.
Still clutching the stuffed fox.
The woman looked almost amused.
"You look exactly like your father."
Marcus didn't answer.
She continued.
"My name is Evelyn Mercer."
"The newspapers will never print it."
"But you deserve to know."
Arthur's expression darkened.
"Evelyn."
She nodded politely.
"Arthur."
"It has been a long time."
Marcus looked between them.
"You two know each other."
Arthur gave a bitter laugh.
"We founded the Council together."
Silence.
Marcus stared.
"What?"
Evelyn smiled.
"He finally told you."
Arthur lowered his rifle.
"I left."
"You betrayed us."
"I saved what was left of my conscience."
Evelyn looked toward Marcus.
"Your biological father believed knowledge should belong to everyone."
She smiled faintly.
"I believed power belongs to those capable of protecting it."
Marcus answered quietly.
"So you murdered people."
"No."
She corrected him.
"I allowed difficult decisions."
Marcus felt anger rising again.
"You stole children."
"I relocated assets."
Marcus clenched his fists.
"They were babies."
For the first time...
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
"They were variables."
Marcus realized something terrifying.
She truly believed what she was saying.
There was no cruelty in her expression.
Only absolute conviction.
Leo tugged gently on Marcus's jacket.
"Daddy..."
Marcus looked down.
Leo held up the stuffed fox.
"It keeps vibrating."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
He took the toy.
From inside...
A faint electronic hum.
The biometric chip had activated.
Arthur's eyes widened.
"It detected both of you."
Evelyn saw it too.
"There it is."
Every sniper laser immediately shifted.
No longer aimed at Marcus.
All of them focused on the stuffed fox.
Marcus understood instantly.
"They don't need me."
"They need that."
Arthur nodded.
"The cipher key."
Reeves shouted into his radio.
"Cover the child!"
Police officers rushed forward, using armored vehicles as shields.
The street erupted into gunfire.
Sniper rounds shattered windshields.
Officers returned fire.
Civilians had long since been evacuated.
The neighborhood became a battlefield.
Marcus dropped behind a concrete planter with Leo.
Sarah finally reached them.
She threw her arms around Leo.
"I've got you."
Marcus looked at Arthur.
"What now?"
Arthur answered without hesitation.
"We destroy the key."
Evelyn laughed from inside the limousine.
"You can't."
Marcus frowned.
"Why not?"
Arthur looked at the stuffed fox.
"Because the key isn't stored there anymore."
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"What?"
Arthur smiled sadly.
"It already transferred."
Marcus looked confused.
"Transferred where?"
Arthur slowly pointed toward Leo.
"The biometric sequence activated."
"The final authentication..."
"...is now inside his neural implant."
Silence.
Marcus stared.
"My son has an implant?"
Victoria whispered from behind them.
"When he was born."
Marcus turned.
"You knew?"
She nodded through tears.
"Our mother insisted."
Marcus could barely process the words.
"My son..."
"...has been carrying the last piece of the cipher his entire life?"
Arthur quietly replied,
"Yes."
Before Marcus could speak...
Leo looked up innocently.
"Daddy..."
"My head hurts."
Marcus's blood ran cold.
Leo winced and placed a tiny hand against his temple.
The stuffed fox suddenly fell from his arms.
Its seams split open.
The hidden biometric chip slid across the pavement.
Dark.
Burned out.
Its job was finished.
Across the street...
Evelyn Mercer smiled.
Then she said the one sentence Marcus had feared most.
"It no longer matters who possesses the key."
She looked directly at Leo.
"The key..."
May you like
"...has become your son."
