Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE WATCHERI couldn't breathe.

Someone had been watching my home.

For how long?

The police searched my apartment.

Nothing had been stolen.

That somehow made it worse.

Whoever had entered wasn't looking for valuables.

They were sending a message.

My neighbor had seen a black SUV parked outside earlier that day.

The vehicle was gone by the time police arrived.

I barely slept.

At 4:17 a.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Silence.

Then a woman's voice.

“Dr. Jenkins?”

“Yes.”

“Don't trust the police.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the screen.

Twenty minutes later, one of the officers from the hospital called.

They had found Emily.

She was not far away.

But she wasn't alone.

She had been found inside an abandoned clinic owned by a company tied to Daniel Harris.

She was unconscious again.

And someone had injected her with something.

When I reached the clinic, police had already surrounded it.

Emily was alive.

Barely.

She had a fresh bruise around her neck.

But there was something else.

A small metal key tied around her wrist.

I recognized the number engraved on it.

We brought her back to the hospital.

This time, she stayed under constant guard.

When she woke, she asked for me.

I sat beside her.

“Emily.”

She looked at me.

“You found the key.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I stole it.”

“From whom?”

“Daniel.”

“Why?”

“To prove he wasn't working alone.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Michael Carter isn't the leader.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then who is?”

Emily swallowed.

“The person above him.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Your hospital administrator.”

I froze.

“Dr. Richard Vale?”

She nodded.

“No.”

She stopped.

Then shook her head harder.

“Not Richard.”

“Who?”

“The board.”

I didn't understand.

“The hospital board?”

She nodded.

“They control everything.”

“Why would they do this?”

Emily stared at the ceiling.

“Because it isn't about hurting women.”

“Then what is it about?”

“Money.”

She began crying.

“They use the women to hide something.”

“What?”

Emily looked at me.

“Organ trafficking.”

The words hit like a punch.

Before I could ask more, the door opened.

Dr. Richard Vale entered.

He closed the door behind him.

“Sarah, we need to talk.”

I stood.

“About Emily?”

“About your investigation.”

He looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“You need to stop.”

I stared at him.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I'm warning you.”

Then he leaned toward me and whispered:

“Because the next cast won't be on Emily.”

May you like

His eyes met mine.

“It will be on someone you love.”
