Chapter 14 - THE DOCTORI couldn't move.

My name filled the screen.

My signature appeared beneath hundreds of medical approvals.

Patient transfers.

Sedation orders.

Surgery authorizations.

I had supposedly signed them years ago.

Except I didn't remember them.

Ariana approached.

“They rebuilt you.”

“Why?”

“Because you were the best subject.”

I stared at her.

“You're saying I became a doctor because of them?”

“Yes.”

“They trained you to help them.”

“No.”

She pointed at the screen.

“They trained you to find victims.”

My blood ran cold.

Every patient I had ever treated.

Every case I had investigated.

Every time I thought I was uncovering abuse.

They had been watching me.

Using me.

I had unknowingly walked through their network for years.

But there was one thing they hadn't expected.

Emily.

Emily remembered.

And now Ariana remembered.

That was why they were afraid.

We escaped Blackwood as federal agents stormed the facility.

Dozens of arrests followed.

Hospitals were raided.

Accounts were frozen.

Politicians resigned.

The story became international news.

But something still bothered me.

My own file.

The signature.

The missing years.

I underwent neurological testing.

Then we found one final recording.

It was me.

Older by perhaps ten years.

Sitting in a room.

Talking to a camera.

I watched myself say:

“If I ever see this recording, then the memory block has failed.”

I stared at the screen.

My recorded self continued.

“I knew they would eventually come for me.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Sarah, you are not their weapon.”

A pause.

“You are their insurance policy.”

Then she explained.

I had secretly built a failsafe.

If the network tried to erase me permanently, all information would automatically release.

Every file.

Every name.

Every bank account.

Everything.

The system was already activated.

But there was one final step.

A physical server hidden beneath the hospital.

Room Nineteen.

The place where it all began.

We returned.

The basement was flooded.

The walls were being demolished.

We searched Room Nineteen.

Behind the operating table was a hidden compartment.

Inside was one old computer.

No network connection.

No screen.

Only a single button.

Ariana looked at me.

“You have to press it.”

“What happens?”

She shook her head.

“Everything becomes public.”

I hesitated.

Emily stepped beside me.

“We've already lost everything.”

She looked at me.

“Let's make sure it meant something.”

I pressed the button.

The machine came alive.

Every light in the basement turned red.

Then the screen displayed one final message.

SYSTEM RESET INITIATED.

A countdown began.

Then the basement door opened.

A man stood there.

Someone we hadn't seen before.

He smiled.

May you like

And said:

“You really thought your father was the man in charge?”
