Chapter 15 - THE LAST FILEThe man walked into Room Nineteen.

He was old.
Maybe seventy.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
He looked at me.
âYou finally remembered.â
I recognized him.
Not from the photographs.
From my childhood.
He had been the doctor who treated me after the accident.
The same doctor who had rewritten my identity.
The same doctor who had trained me.
Dr. Adrian Black.
The founder of Blackwood.
âYou're alive,â I whispered.
âOf course.â
He smiled.
âYou children always think institutions disappear when the buildings do.â
Ariana stepped forward.
âYou ruined our lives.â
âNo.â
He looked at her.
âI gave your lives purpose.â
Emily spat:
âYou tortured us.â
âI studied human survival.â
âYou killed people.â
âI selected necessary losses.â
His calmness was almost worse than rage.
The computer continued counting down.
He reached for it.
I blocked him.
He raised a gun.
Ariana stepped in front of me.
Then someone tackled him.
Daniel.
He was alive.
He slammed Black to the floor.
The gun skidded away.
Police stormed the basement.
Black was arrested.
But the countdown continued.
The screen went black.
Then every file exploded across the internet.
Thousands of names.
Thousands of documents.
Decades of crimes.
The world finally saw everything.
Hospitals denied involvement.
Governments launched investigations.
Victims came forward.
People who had been silent for years finally spoke.
The network collapsed.
Not overnight.
But enough.
Months later, Emily underwent another surgery.
Her hand survived.
The infection was gone.
The scars remained.
So did the memories.
Ariana started working with investigators.
She became one of the most important witnesses in the case.
Daniel pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
He would spend decades in prison.
Carter received a reduced sentence in exchange for his testimony.
And me?
I kept practicing medicine.
But I changed.
Now, when a patient says everything is fine, I don't just listen to the person standing beside them.
I listen to the silence between their words.
One evening, Emily visited me.
She sat across from my desk.
âYou saved me.â
I shook my head.
âYou saved yourself.â
She smiled.
Then she placed an envelope on my desk.
âWhat is that?â
âSomething they missed.â
My heart tightened.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Three girls.
Me.
Emily.
And Ariana.
Standing together outside Blackwood.
But there was something strange.
The date on the photograph was after the day Ariana was supposedly taken.
I looked at Emily.
âWhat is this?â
She didn't answer.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten sentence.
My handwriting.
IF YOU FOUND THIS, THE FIRST STORY WAS ONLY A DISTRACTION.
My skin went cold.
I looked at Emily.
âWhere did you get this?â
Her smile disappeared.
âA room they never found.â
I stared at her.
âWhat room?â
She leaned forward.
âRoom twenty.â
My blood turned to ice.
âThe hospital only had nineteen.â
Emily shook her head.
âNo.â
She whispered:
âThat is what they wanted everyone to believe.â
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a child's voice whispered:
âDoctor JenkinsâŠâ
I froze.
âWho is this?â
The voice replied:
âYou forgot me.â
The line went dead.
Emily looked at me.
I looked at the photograph again.
Three girls.
Three shadows.
And behind us, barely visible through the glass door of Blackwood, stood a fourth child.
A little girl.
Watching.
Waiting.
Someone who had never appeared in any file.
Someone the network had erased from history.
And beneath the photograph, in my handwriting, were six final words:
SHE IS STILL INSIDE ROOM TWENTY.
I stood.
For the first time in my life, I understood something terrifying.
May you like
We hadn't destroyed the nightmare.
We had only opened the door.
