Chapter 8: The First Bullet

The first gunshot echoed through the hidden passage like thunder trapped inside stone.

The second came only seconds later.

Then...

Silence.

Detective Samuel Hayes raised one clenched fist.

Everyone froze.

No one spoke.

The only sound was Eli's uneven breathing as he instinctively backed toward Claire.

Without thinking, Noah stepped in front of him.

The two boys looked at one another for the first time.

They had the same dark hair.

The same blue eyes.

The same cautious expression.

But there was something different.

Noah looked like a child who had grown up surrounded by people.

Eli looked like a child who had learned to survive by staying invisible.

Neither of them said a word.

Instead...

Noah quietly held out the small wooden horse he had carried since the wedding.

Eli stared at it.

Then slowly reached into his sweater pocket.

He pulled out another.

The horses fit together perfectly.

The two wooden carvings locked into each other with a soft click, forming a single figure.

Hidden inside was a folded strip of paper.

Hayes unfolded it carefully.

Only one sentence had been written.

"When the horses become one, trust neither blood nor name."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

No one answered.

Another shot.

Closer this time.

Officer Romero moved toward the tunnel entrance.

"I'll check the stairs."

Hayes grabbed his arm.

"Nobody goes alone."

Grant joined him.

The three officers advanced slowly, flashlights cutting through the darkness.

Ten meters.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Nothing.

The tunnel was empty.

Then Romero's light landed on something lying across the stone floor.

A police radio.

Smashed.

Covered in fresh blood.

Grant's voice became tense.

"That belonged to Officer Mills."

Hayes looked around.

"Mills!"

No answer.

Only the distant drip of water echoing through the tunnel.

Back inside the hidden apartment...

Claire wrapped a blanket around Eli's shoulders.

The boy couldn't stop looking at Noah.

Finally he whispered,

"You came."

Noah nodded.

"I tried."

Claire looked between them.

"You know each other?"

Eli answered.

"We met once."

Daniel frowned.

"When?"

"Last year."

"Where?"

"The garden."

"What garden?"

Eli looked confused.

"The one upstairs."

Silence.

Hayes turned sharply.

"There isn't a garden above the apartment."

Eli blinked.

"There is."

He looked at Noah.

"We played hide-and-seek."

Noah nodded.

"Dad brought me."

Daniel felt the room tilt.

Michael had secretly introduced the boys.

Without telling anyone.

Suddenly...

Officer Grant called from the tunnel.

"Detective!"

Everyone hurried toward her.

She was kneeling beside a patch of dried mud on the floor.

Footprints.

Several sets.

One belonged to heavy police boots.

Another...

Bare feet.

Much larger than Eli's.

Hayes measured them with his flashlight.

"Adult male."

Romero followed the trail.

"They're fresh."

Grant pointed farther ahead.

"They don't lead outside."

Hayes frowned.

"They disappear."

Romero crouched lower.

"No..."

He brushed away loose dirt.

"They go through the wall."

The stone wall looked solid.

Centuries old.

Until Romero noticed tiny scrape marks around one edge.

A concealed door.

Again.

Hayes sighed.

"How many hidden passages did this family build?"

Daniel answered quietly,

"I don't think even my father knew."

Romero pushed.

Nothing happened.

Eli stepped forward.

"You have to knock."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

"Three times."

He demonstrated.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

A hidden latch released.

The stone door slowly swung inward.

Cold air rushed out.

Beyond it stretched another corridor.

Unlike the first one...

This tunnel had electric lights.

Security cameras.

Fresh concrete.

Someone had modernized it recently.

Hayes immediately understood.

"This wasn't built decades ago."

"It was upgraded."

Someone had been using it.

Often.

Meanwhile...

At St. Catherine's Hospital...

Michael Bennett regained consciousness for exactly forty-three seconds.

This time the doctors were ready.

They removed the ventilator just long enough for him to speak.

Hayes answered the emergency call through video link.

"Michael."

The detective leaned close to the screen.

"Who attacked you?"

Michael struggled to breathe.

"...Andrew..."

Hayes glanced toward Daniel.

"Where is Andrew?"

Michael shook his head weakly.

"...not..."

He coughed violently.

"...not enemy..."

The doctors urged him not to speak.

He ignored them.

"...find..."

Another breath.

"...Eleanor..."

Hayes frowned.

"We found her apartment."

Michael's eyes widened.

"No..."

He forced out the words.

"...too late..."

His monitor screamed.

Doctors pushed everyone away.

The connection ended.

Back beneath Bennett Manor...

The new tunnel descended deeper.

The walls changed from stone to reinforced concrete.

Someone had spent millions building this place.

Security doors.

Motion sensors.

Ventilation systems.

It looked less like a secret passage...

And more like a hidden bunker.

Officer Romero stopped suddenly.

"Movement."

Everyone raised their flashlights.

A figure stumbled out of the darkness.

Officer Mills.

Alive.

Barely.

Blood covered the side of his head.

Hayes caught him before he collapsed.

"What happened?"

Mills struggled to focus.

"There..."

He pointed weakly behind him.

"...masked..."

"How many?"

"I only saw..."

He swallowed.

"...one."

"What did he look like?"

"Black coat..."

"...silver cane..."

Daniel's heart skipped.

"The old man."

Claire looked at him.

"What old man?"

Daniel whispered,

"The man who worked for my grandfather."

"No..."

He shook his head.

"...that can't be."

"He died twenty years ago."

Before Hayes could ask another question...

A deep mechanical rumble echoed through the bunker.

The concrete floor vibrated.

Red emergency lights flashed on.

A computerized voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Security protocol activated."

"Vault opening."

Everyone looked toward the end of the corridor.

A massive steel door...

Nearly two feet thick...

Slowly began to rise.

Behind it...

Rows of shelves stretched into darkness.

Thousands of numbered files.

Dozens of locked cases.

Paintings.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

Boxes sealed with wax.

An entire hidden archive.

Daniel whispered,

"My God..."

Hayes took one step forward.

"This..."

"...is what someone has been killing to protect."

Then, from somewhere inside the vast archive, a calm elderly voice echoed through the darkness.

"I was wondering..."

"...how long it would take my grandsons to find me."

The voice was unmistakably male.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

He had heard it only in old home movies.

Only as a child.

Impossible.

Because according to every official record...

Arthur Bennett...

May you like

The patriarch of the Bennett family...

Had been buried eighteen years ago.
