Chapter 15: The Hospital Siege

Claire stared at the message.

A live location.

St. Catherine's Medical Center.

Below it, the same chilling warning:

They're going to finish Michael before he wakes up.

The timestamp read:

Sent: 8 seconds ago.

Hayes immediately took the phone.

"Can we trace it?"

Officer Grant shook her head.

"Not yet."

"But whoever sent this knew Claire's number."

Daniel was already heading for the door.

"We're wasting time."

Hayes looked at Arthur.

"Could Victor have sent it?"

Arthur thought for a moment.

"No."

"He never warns."

"He only distracts."

Claire frowned.

"Then who?"

Arthur answered quietly.

"Someone inside the organization."

St. Catherine's Medical Center

At the same moment...

Michael Bennett lay unconscious in the intensive care unit.

Nurse Elena Morris checked his IV for the third time in ten minutes.

Everything appeared normal.

Blood pressure stable.

Heart rate improving.

She smiled slightly.

"You picked a good day to fight."

She turned toward the medication cabinet.

A man wearing surgical scrubs entered.

Face mask.

Protective glasses.

Hospital ID.

"Morning."

Elena nodded politely.

"I wasn't told anyone was coming."

"Neurology consult."

His answer came smoothly.

Too smoothly.

He approached Michael's bedside.

Clipboard in hand.

Elena noticed something strange.

The hospital ID badge looked authentic.

But the color stripe was wrong.

Neurology used blue.

His badge carried green.

She frowned.

"Excuse me..."

The man didn't answer.

Instead...

He quietly unlocked the brake on Michael's hospital bed.

Elena's pulse quickened.

"What are you doing?"

The man smiled beneath his mask.

Then pushed the bed toward the door.

Elena reacted instantly.

"Security!"

The man grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

The clipboard fell.

A syringe rolled across the floor.

Filled with a clear liquid.

Elena kicked it beneath the bed before he could retrieve it.

The stranger shoved her into the wall.

Her emergency alarm button activated.

Red lights began flashing through the ICU.

The man didn't hesitate.

He sprinted into the hallway.

Without Michael.

Ten Minutes Later

Hayes' convoy arrived at the hospital.

Police vehicles screeched to a halt beneath the emergency entrance.

Doctors and nurses rushed in every direction.

Security officers sealed every floor.

Hayes found Elena giving her statement.

She still trembled.

"What happened?"

"He wasn't a doctor."

"What did he want?"

"I don't know."

She pointed toward the syringe now sealed inside an evidence bag.

"He brought that."

A toxicologist hurried over.

"We've identified it."

Hayes looked up.

"What is it?"

"Not poison."

Everyone frowned.

"It's a paralytic."

Daniel looked confused.

"He was trying to kill Michael."

The toxicologist shook his head.

"No."

"He was trying to wake him."

Silence.

Claire blinked.

"What?"

The toxicologist continued.

"In the wrong dosage..."

"...this drug would temporarily reverse sedation."

"But without respiratory support..."

"He would regain consciousness for less than a minute."

"And then suffocate."

Hayes understood immediately.

"They didn't want him dead."

"They wanted information."

Arthur nodded grimly.

"They still don't know where the list is."

ICU Room 714

Michael remained unconscious.

Hayes entered alone.

The room was quiet.

Machines beeped steadily.

Sunlight filtered through partially opened blinds.

He stood beside the bed.

"You've caused quite a storm."

No response.

Hayes looked around the room.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

His eyes stopped on a small object hanging from the IV stand.

A folded paper crane.

Made from plain white notebook paper.

He frowned.

It hadn't been mentioned in any report.

He carefully unfolded it.

Inside...

Only four handwritten words.

Trust the violinist.

Hayes stared.

"The violinist?"

Claire entered moments later.

"What is it?"

Hayes handed her the note.

She read it twice.

Then her expression changed.

"The wedding."

"What about it?"

"The string quartet."

Hayes nodded slowly.

"The violinist."

Claire closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"The lead violinist..."

"He never stopped watching Noah."

Daniel frowned.

"You noticed that?"

"I teach children."

"I notice adults who watch children."

She looked back at Hayes.

"He wasn't watching the bride."

"He wasn't watching the guests."

"He watched Noah almost the entire ceremony."

Officer Romero rushed into the room.

"Detective!"

"What now?"

"We identified every musician from the quartet."

"And?"

"Three of them were legitimate professionals."

"The violinist wasn't."

Hayes straightened.

"Who is he?"

Romero handed over a photograph.

A younger man.

Dark hair.

Blue eyes.

Hayes recognized him immediately.

The same face appeared in one of the personnel files from Project Pegasus.

Name:

Dr. Ethan Vale

Occupation:

Behavioral Development Specialist.

Status:

Missing for 18 years.

Claire whispered,

"He was there..."

"He was watching Noah."

Arthur looked at the photograph.

A rare smile crossed his face.

"Ethan."

Hayes looked at him.

"You know him."

Arthur nodded.

"He was the last person I trusted."

Before Hayes could ask another question...

The television mounted in the corner switched on by itself.

Static.

Then a live broadcast.

Every news channel had interrupted regular programming.

A reporter stood outside Bennett Manor.

Behind her...

Smoke poured from the roof.

Firefighters rushed toward the entrance.

The caption read:

BREAKING NEWS
BENNETT MANOR ENGULFED IN FLAMES

Daniel stared in disbelief.

"No..."

Arthur slowly closed his eyes.

"The archive."

Claire reached for the remote.

The reporter continued.

"Authorities believe the fire began simultaneously in multiple locations, suggesting deliberate arson."

Hayes' phone rang.

Officer Grant.

He answered immediately.

"Talk to me."

Her voice came fast.

"We just received satellite images."

"Of what?"

"The fire."

"And?"

"It wasn't started to destroy the house."

Hayes frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Grant took a slow breath.

"Thermal imaging shows a massive underground structure."

Hayes looked toward Arthur.

Grant continued.

"The fire is forcing everyone to focus on the mansion..."

"...while something beneath it is moving."

Arthur's face turned ashen.

"No..."

Daniel turned sharply.

"What?"

Arthur whispered,

"The lower vault."

Hayes narrowed his eyes.

"I thought we'd already found it."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"What you found..."

"...was only the archive."

Claire felt her heartbeat quicken.

"Then what's below the archive?"

Arthur looked at each of them in turn.

When he finally spoke...

His voice carried more fear than anyone had yet heard.

"The people who funded Project Pegasus..."

"...never stored their secrets underground."

He looked toward the television where Bennett Manor continued to burn.

"They stored themselves."

Silence.

Hayes slowly lowered the phone.

Arthur finished the sentence.

"There are survivors still living beneath that house."

And at that exact moment...

Every monitor in Michael's ICU room went dark.

One by one.

The heart monitor.

The ventilator display.

The infusion pumps.

The hospital's backup generator had just failed.

Someone had cut the power.
