Chapter 11: Project Pegasus

The underground chamber fell into absolute silence.
Claire couldn't take her eyes off the brass plaque.
CLAIRE MONROE.
Her own name.
Engraved years before she had ever met Daniel Bennett.
Her knees felt weak.
"That's impossible..."
she whispered.
"I've never even heard of this place."
Detective Hayes stepped in front of her instinctively.
"No one touches anything."
Officer Grant photographed every chamber.
Every plaque.
Every numbered file.
Every inch of the room.
This was no longer a family investigation.
It had become something far larger.
Victor Soren's laughter echoed from somewhere below.
"You still believe this story began at the wedding."
"It didn't."
"It began thirty-one years ago."
Hayes raised his flashlight toward the darkness.
"Come out."
"No."
Victor's voice bounced through the underground complex.
"I've spent years staying invisible."
"I'm not ruining that now."
Arthur Bennett slowly descended onto an old wooden chair.
For the first time since anyone had met him...
He looked exhausted.
Eleanor knelt beside him.
"It's over."
Arthur shook his head.
"No."
"It never ended."
Daniel looked from one to the other.
"I want answers."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"You deserve them."
"The Bennett Foundation..."
Arthur began quietly,
"...was never just a charity."
Hayes listened without interrupting.
"It financed orphanages."
"Scholarship programs."
"Children's hospitals."
"Publicly."
Arthur looked toward the endless rows of glass chambers.
"Privately..."
"...it financed genetic research."
Claire frowned.
"What kind of research?"
Arthur hesitated.
"The kind governments officially prohibited."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"My father was involved."
Arthur nodded.
"Edward believed the future belonged to carefully selected bloodlines."
"He called it..."
Arthur's voice grew bitter.
"...Project Pegasus."
Hayes wrote the words into his notebook.
"What was the objective?"
Arthur looked toward Noah and Eli.
"To create children with extraordinary cognitive abilities."
Claire stared at him.
"You're talking about genetic engineering."
Arthur nodded once.
"Not cloning."
"Selection."
"Manipulation."
"Embryonic modification."
Hayes frowned.
"And Noah?"
Arthur looked away.
"Noah wasn't supposed to exist."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"What does that mean?"
"Edward approved one final experimental sequence."
"It failed."
"So he ordered everything destroyed."
Arthur looked toward Eli.
"But Michael..."
"...couldn't do it."
Daniel slowly turned toward his nephew.
Michael had always adored Noah.
Almost protectively.
As if he had been guarding something much more important than a son.
Arthur continued.
"Michael secretly removed two embryos."
Silence.
"He hid them."
"He arranged two pregnancies."
Claire felt the room spinning.
"No..."
Arthur nodded.
"Noah."
"Eli."
"They were never experiments to Michael."
"They were children."
"He chose to save them."
Noah looked confused.
"Am I adopted?"
Claire immediately knelt beside him.
She gently held both of his shoulders.
"No."
"You are loved."
The answer wasn't complete.
But it was the only truth she could honestly promise.
Eli quietly asked,
"Did Dad save me?"
Arthur smiled sadly.
"Every single day."
Hayes looked around the chamber.
"What about the other names?"
Arthur's expression darkened.
"There were dozens."
"Most never survived."
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
"You mean..."
Arthur nodded.
"The project ended long ago."
"But its records remained."
Officer Romero called from another row of chambers.
"Detective."
Hayes hurried over.
"What did you find?"
Romero pointed toward a steel cabinet built into the wall.
Unlike everything else...
It wasn't dusty.
Someone had opened it recently.
Inside rested a laptop connected to its charger.
Still running.
The screen saver faded.
A login page appeared.
One username.
ADMIN
No password prompt.
Instead...
The screen displayed a facial recognition request.
Hayes frowned.
"Whose face?"
Arthur looked once.
His expression changed instantly.
"No."
He stepped backward.
"Don't activate it."
"Why?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"Because whoever built this system..."
"...expected Claire."
Every eye turned toward her.
Claire stared at the screen.
"What?"
Hayes looked again.
The software instructions read:
AUTHORIZED SUBJECT: CLAIRE MONROE
Before anyone could process it...
The laptop activated by itself.
A camera extended from the top of the screen.
A green scanning light swept across Claire's face.
Identity confirmed.
Everyone froze.
Claire hadn't moved.
She hadn't touched anything.
The computer spoke in a calm synthetic voice.
"Welcome back..."
A pause.
"...Dr. Claire Monroe."
Silence.
Claire's heart stopped.
"No."
She shook her head violently.
"That's not possible."
"I've never..."
She looked helplessly at Daniel.
"...I'm a kindergarten teacher."
The voice continued.
"Access level Omega."
"Primary authorization accepted."
The laptop unlocked.
Hundreds of classified folders appeared.
Hayes stared.
"Claire..."
She whispered,
"I don't understand."
Neither did anyone else.
Arthur slowly lowered his head.
"So..."
he murmured.
"They finally found her."
Daniel looked at him sharply.
"What are you talking about?"
Arthur looked at Claire with deep sorrow.
"The Claire Monroe standing here today..."
"...is not the first Claire Monroe."
No one breathed.
Arthur continued.
"There was another."
"A scientist."
"The original Dr. Claire Monroe."
Claire shook her head.
"My parents..."
Arthur interrupted gently.
"...adopted you."
Her world seemed to fracture.
"I have photographs."
"You have memories."
Arthur nodded.
"Real memories."
"But they begin..."
"...after the fire."
Claire's hands began trembling.
"What fire?"
Arthur closed his eyes.
"The laboratory fire."
Hayes slowly looked back toward the laptop.
A new folder had opened automatically.
Its title read:
SUBJECT C-17
Below it...
A photograph filled the screen.
A woman wearing a white laboratory coat.
She looked no older than thirty.
She smiled confidently into the camera.
She had the same green eyes.
The same smile.
The same face.
As Claire.
Not similar.
Identical.
The caption beneath the photograph read:
Dr. Claire Monroe
Lead Geneticist
Project Pegasus
Status: Deceased
Claire felt the room vanish beneath her.
Her breathing became shallow.
Daniel caught her before she collapsed.
"No..."
she whispered through tears.
"Who am I?"
No one answered.
Because before anyone could...
The lights throughout the underground complex suddenly shut off.
Every monitor went black.
Every emergency light died.
The only remaining illumination came from one enormous screen at the far end of the chamber.
It flickered to life.
A prerecorded video began playing.
A man in a dark suit appeared.
Edward Bennett.
Dead for twelve years.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then smiled.
"If you're watching this..."
he said calmly,
"...then Project Pegasus has entered its final phase."

The recording timestamp appeared in the corner.
Recorded... three days ago.
