Chapter 7: The Boy Beneath the House

No one lowered their flashlight.

No one lowered their weapon.

The small figure standing in the doorway blinked against the harsh white beams.

He couldn't have been older than seven.

His dark hair was tangled.

His oversized sweater hung loosely over his thin frame.

There was dirt beneath his fingernails and a fading bruise along one wrist.

Yet what stopped everyone cold wasn't his appearance.

It was his face.

He looked exactly like Michael Bennett.

Not Noah.

Michael.

The same blue eyes.

The same jawline.

The same slight dimple on the left cheek.

If someone had shown Hayes a childhood photograph of Michael Bennett, he would have believed he was looking at the same boy.

Claire slowly stepped forward.

She remembered exactly how Noah had run into her arms.

She made the same choice now.

She didn't reach for Eli.

She simply knelt.

"My name is Claire."

The boy studied her carefully.

After several long seconds, he looked at the silver star necklace around her neck.

His expression changed.

"...You're the star."

Claire felt a chill spread through her chest.

"You know this necklace?"

Eli nodded.

"Dad said..."

His voice remained barely above a whisper.

"...if the stars ever came, it meant the secret was broken."

Hayes exchanged a quick glance with Daniel.

Michael had prepared both boys.

Long before the wedding.

Daniel slowly approached.

"Eli..."

The boy immediately took one step backward.

His breathing became uneven.

"Don't come closer."

Daniel stopped.

"You know my name?"

Eli nodded.

"I know everybody."

"What do you mean?"

"I've seen your pictures."

He pointed toward the hundreds of family photographs covering the walls.

"I just wasn't allowed to meet you."

Daniel looked around the hidden apartment.

"You've lived here?"

"My whole life."

"With who?"

Eli lowered his eyes.

"...Grandma."

Silence.

No one spoke.

Hayes asked carefully,

"Which grandma?"

Eli looked confused by the question.

"My grandma."

"What's her name?"

The boy answered without hesitation.

"Eleanor Bennett."

Daniel's face turned white.

"My mother."

Claire felt her pulse quicken.

"Where is she now?"

Eli looked toward the tunnel.

"She left."

"When?"

"This morning."

"Did she say where she was going?"

He shook his head.

"She said..."

His voice trembled.

"...the horses were waking up."

The phrase again.

The horses.

Every clue seemed to circle back to the same strange words.

Hayes crouched beside the child's desk.

"Eli."

"I need to ask you something."

The boy nodded cautiously.

"Were you in Michael's office tonight?"

"Yes."

"Were you hurt?"

"No."

"Whose blood was on the floor?"

Eli looked away.

"My dad's."

"And whose else?"

Silence.

Then...

"...Andrew's."

Every officer looked at Daniel.

Daniel whispered,

"There really was an Andrew."

Hayes remained perfectly calm.

"Who is Andrew?"

Eli frowned.

"You don't know?"

"No."

The boy looked genuinely surprised.

"He's my uncle."

Daniel stared at him.

"My uncle?"

Eli nodded.

"He comes every Thursday."

Claire's mind raced.

If Eli had lived underground his entire life...

His sense of time depended completely on the routines around him.

Every Thursday.

Regular visits.

Whoever Andrew was...

He wasn't dead.

He wasn't missing.

He had been part of Eli's life for years.

Officer Grant searched another bookshelf.

A leather photo album slipped free.

She opened it.

Inside were recent photographs.

Very recent.

Christmas.

Birthdays.

A picnic.

Eli smiling beside an elderly woman.

Michael standing behind them.

Another adult male stood to one side.

His face wasn't hidden.

It hadn't been cut away.

Grant stared.

"Detective..."

Hayes looked over.

The photograph showed a man in his early fifties.

Dark blond hair streaked with gray.

Sharp blue eyes.

The resemblance to Michael and Daniel was unmistakable.

Same nose.

Same smile.

Same Bennett features.

On the back of the picture:

Andrew, Eleanor, Michael, and Eli.

Dated...

Last Christmas.

Daniel's knees nearly buckled.

"My mother..."

He struggled to breathe.

"...has been alive for sixteen years."

Suddenly...

A loud beep echoed from Officer Romero's equipment.

His portable signal detector.

He frowned.

"We've got an electronic device."

Hayes turned.

"Where?"

Romero followed the signal.

Stronger.

Stronger.

He stopped in front of the child's bed.

The detector screamed.

They lifted the mattress.

Nothing.

They removed the wooden bed frame.

Still nothing.

Finally Romero tapped the concrete floor.

Hollow.

"There."

Within minutes they pried open another hidden compartment.

Inside rested a waterproof metal case.

Hayes carefully opened it.

Not money.

Not weapons.

Video tapes.

Hard drives.

USB drives.

Every one carefully labeled.

1998

2001

2007

2014

Wedding Night

The room fell silent.

Claire whispered,

"Michael recorded everything."

Hayes nodded slowly.

"No."

He held up one of the drives.

"Someone did."

Back at the hospital...

Michael's heart rate suddenly accelerated.

Nurse Elena hurried inside.

His eyes fluttered open.

Only halfway.

He couldn't move.

Couldn't speak.

But he saw the television mounted on the wall.

Breaking news.

A live helicopter shot of Bennett Manor.

Police everywhere.

Michael struggled desperately against the ventilator.

The monitor alarms exploded.

Doctors rushed in.

His right hand clawed weakly toward the television.

Again.

Again.

As if trying to reach it.

The surgeon leaned close.

"Michael."

"Can you hear me?"

A single tear rolled down Michael's face.

He forced one word past the breathing tube.

Barely audible.

"...late..."

Underground...

Officer Grant connected one of the USB drives to a secure forensic laptop.

The screen flickered.

A video file automatically opened.

The recording date appeared.

August 14, 2018

Six years earlier.

The camera showed the hidden apartment.

Michael Bennett sat across from an elderly woman.

Daniel gasped.

His mother.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

she said calmly,

"...then one of us has already failed."

She glanced toward someone standing off camera.

"Michael."

"I know you promised never to tell Daniel."

A pause.

"But promises don't matter anymore."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"There is something your father buried."

Another pause.

"Not money."

"Not power."

She looked straight into the lens.

"He buried a child."

The room froze.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Eleanor Bennett continued,

"And unless Daniel learns the truth..."

she whispered,

"...the Bennett family will lose another son."

The video suddenly cut to black.

At that exact moment...

A gunshot echoed somewhere above the hidden apartment.

One shot.

Then another.

Hayes looked toward the tunnel.

"They found us."

He grabbed his weapon.

"Everyone move!"

May you like

Outside, somewhere inside Bennett Manor...

Someone had just opened fire.
