Chapter 9 - My Sister's Gun

The Person I Couldn't Bear to Shoot

“Claire?”

Her hands were shaking.

“Morgan, I'm sorry.”

“Put the gun down.”

“I can't.”

“You can.”

She shook her head.

“They have my son.”

“I know.”

“They have Elena.”

I froze.

“You know where she is?”

Claire nodded.

“They moved her tonight.”

“Where?”

“They’re bringing her here.”

“Why?”

“To force the trust activation.”

I stared at her.

“Who has control?”

Claire swallowed.

“Dad.”

Tyler stepped forward.

“Claire, listen to me.”

She aimed at him.

“You stay back.”

“You don't want to do this.”

“I know.”

“Then put it down.”

“I can't.”

I looked at my sister.

“You're scared.”

“Yes.”

“Not angry.”

“No.”

“Then you're being controlled.”

Tears ran down her face.

“They said if I fail, my son dies.”

I took one step closer.

“I won't let that happen.”

“You can't promise that.”

“I can promise I'll fight.”

She lowered the gun slightly.

A sound echoed through the vault.

Footsteps.

More than one person.

Claire looked toward the door.

“Too late.”

The door opened.

My father entered.

Victor stood behind him.

Two armed men followed.

My father looked at me.

“You always were stubborn.”

I stared at him.

“You threatened your grandson.”

“I protected my family.”

“You kidnapped an innocent child.”

“He's leverage.”

“You're sick.”

He smiled sadly.

“You have no idea what your grandfather did to this family.”

“What did he do?”

“He chose you.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He believed you were better than us.”

My father looked at Claire.

“He was wrong.”

Claire cried.

My father continued.

“You have no idea how many times I begged him to include me.”

“And?”

“He gave you control instead.”

“So you destroyed everything to take it.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

The honesty stunned me.

Victor stepped forward.

“Open the trust.”

“No.”

“You have the documents.”

“Yes.”

“Then activate them.”

“No.”

Victor sighed.

“You've misunderstood the situation.”

“Again?”

He smiled.

“Elena is already here.”

A side door opened.

A woman was dragged into the room.

She was pale, exhausted.

She looked at me.

Our eyes met.

I knew immediately.

Family.

Not because of resemblance.

Because of something in her expression.

Recognition.

She had spent years waiting to see me.

“Morgan?”

I stepped forward.

“Elena.”

My father looked irritated.

“Enough.”

Elena's eyes never left mine.

“You have my father's eyes.”

I whispered.

“So do you.”

Victor placed two documents on the table.

“Sign.”

I looked at Elena.

“What happens if I don't?”

“They both disappear.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Victor pointed at a monitor.

The screen showed my nephew.

Another showed Elena's daughter.

The baby.

Both alive.

Both terrified.

I closed my eyes.

Then opened them.

I smiled.

Victor frowned.

“What?”

“You made one mistake.”

He looked at the USB in my hand.

“What mistake?”

“You thought the files were the leverage.”

I held it up.

“The files are insurance.”

Victor moved toward me.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

I looked at Elena.

“Can you activate your side of the trust?”

Her eyes widened.

“I don't have access.”

I smiled.

“You do.”

I pulled out my grandfather's letter.

He had written another line.

Hidden in the margins.

The beneficiary is not given control.

The beneficiary is recognized.

Elena stared.

“What does that mean?”

“Your identity.”

Victor moved forward.

“Stop.”

I ignored him.

“Say your full legal name.”

Elena swallowed.

“Elena Grace Hayes.”

The vault lights turned blue.

A hidden system came alive.

My father stepped back.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

“I found the second key.”

The computer displayed:

BENEFICIARY TWO VERIFIED.

Then:

BENEFICIARY ONE REQUIRED.

I touched the screen.

“Morgan Elizabeth Hayes.”

The system asked:

ACTIVATE CONTROL?

I looked at Elena.

She nodded.

I pressed YES.

Every monitor in the vault changed.

Files began unlocking.

Victor's face went white.

My father whispered:

“No.”

A red warning appeared.

UNAUTHORIZED TRANSFER DETECTED.

Then another line.

AUTOMATIC DISCLOSURE PROTOCOL INITIATED.

Victor lunged.

Tyler tackled him.

The room exploded into chaos.

Claire dropped the gun.

Security rushed in through the side corridor.

And somewhere above us, dozens of phones began ringing at the exact same time.

Because my grandfather had built one final safeguard.

When the trust was activated by both heirs, every hidden transaction would be sent to every regulator, lender, shareholder, and journalist connected to the network.

My father looked at me with pure hatred.

“You've destroyed us.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

I looked at the screen.

“You did.”

Then the final file opened.

It contained one sentence.

FRAUD ORIGINATOR: VICTOR LANG.

But beneath it was another name.

SECONDARY ARCHITECT: RICHARD HAYES.

My father closed his eyes.

And I realized the worst was still coming.

May you like

Because Victor had not been the mastermind.

My father had.
