Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

My Father's Final Enemy
The timer read 8:32.
I grabbed the ledger.
Elena searched the wall.
“There has to be another exit.”
“There is.”
“How do you know?”
“My grandfather didn't build a vault without one.”
We found the second door behind the shelving.
Locked.
I held the brass key.
It fit.
The door opened.
We stumbled into a narrow tunnel.
The vault sealed behind us.
Smoke poured through the vents.
We ran.
At the end of the tunnel was an old maintenance chamber.
A woman stood there.
Gray coat.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
Elena stopped.
“Mom?”
The woman looked at her.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Elena ran.
They embraced.
I watched.
Samantha Vale was alive.
My father's most dangerous secret had just walked into the room.
“How?”
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather helped me disappear.”
“Why?”
“To survive.”
“What happened?”
She looked at Elena.
“Your father found out I had discovered the ledger.”
“You worked with my grandfather.”
“Yes.”
“What did you discover?”
“Your father wasn't the architect.”
I froze.
“You said earlier…”
“I said he wasn't alone.”
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out another file.
Inside was a series of bank documents.
Foreign accounts.
Political donations.
Private security contracts.
Weapons purchases.
My stomach turned.
“This isn't just real estate fraud.”
“No.”
“What is it?”
“Money laundering.”
“For whom?”
She looked at me.
“People powerful enough to make investigations disappear.”
I felt cold.
“Victor?”
“Victor was a broker.”
“My father?”
“A collector.”
“Then who was the architect?”
Samantha looked toward Elena.
“Your grandfather's brother.”
I stared.
“What?”
“Daniel Hayes had an older brother.”
I remembered the family stories.
There had never been an older brother.
“He died before your grandfather built his first company.”
“He didn't.”
Samantha shook her head.
“He disappeared.”
“Where is he?”
“He changed his name.”
“To what?”
She said it.
I knew the name.
Everyone knew the name.
Elias Vale.
Founder of Vale Capital.
One of the largest private investment firms in the region.
I felt sick.
“My grandfather's brother owns Vale Capital?”
“He does.”
“And Falcon Ridge?”
“Partially.”
“How much?”
Samantha smiled grimly.
“Enough.”
I realized the true scale.
Falcon Ridge.
Hayes Legacy.
Sterling Heights.
Northstar.
Vale Capital.
They weren't separate.
They were one network.
A machine.
And my family had been fighting over control of it for decades.
I asked the question I feared.
“Why did my grandfather leave it to me?”
“Because he knew Elias wanted it.”
“Why couldn't he stop him?”
“He was dying.”
“And my father?”
“Your father made a deal.”
“With Elias?”
“Yes.”
“What deal?”
“Your father promised to transfer your trust.”
I stared at the file.
“But he couldn't.”
“Not without you.”
“Which is why they needed me.”
Samantha nodded.
“There was one more problem.”
“Elena.”
“Yes.”
I looked at my sister.
She was still holding her mother's hand.
“Both beneficiaries had to agree.”
“Correct.”
“Then Victor's plan was never about killing us.”
Samantha's face hardened.
“It was about forcing you to sign willingly.”
“Because then the trust would transfer legally.”
“Yes.”
I thought about my mother's message.
You won't be joining us this New Year.
The rejection had been deliberate.
They wanted me isolated.
They wanted me angry.
They wanted me to react emotionally.
Then Tyler showed up at Falcon Ridge.
He was supposed to trigger something.
Fear.
Humiliation.
Perhaps a confrontation.
But he had accidentally exposed himself.
And that had accelerated the plan.
I looked at Samantha.
“What happens next?”
She gave me a look I didn't like.
“Elias knows you have the ledger.”
“How?”
“Because I told him.”
I froze.
“What?”
She smiled faintly.
“I wanted him to come.”
“You set me up?”
“No.”
She looked toward the tunnel.
“I set him up.”
A sound echoed from somewhere underground.
Footsteps.
Several.
Samantha handed me a small key.
“Take Elena.”
“Where?”
“Back to Falcon Ridge.”
“And you?”
“I'll handle Elias.”
“No.”
She stared at me.
“You're my family.”
Her expression softened.
“That's exactly why I need you to leave.”
The tunnel lights went out.
A man’s voice echoed.
“Samantha.”
She whispered:
“He's here.”
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Elias Vale.
He smiled.
Then looked directly at me.
May you like
“So,” he said.
“The girl inherited the empire.”
