Chapter 13 - The Empire Under the City

Why They All Needed Me Alive
Elias did not raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
Power had its own volume.
“Hello, Morgan.”
I stepped in front of Elena.
“You know who I am.”
“Of course.”
“How?”
“Your grandfather talked about you constantly.”
“You knew him.”
“He was my brother.”
“So you admit it.”
He smiled.
“There's nothing to admit.”
Samantha stepped forward.
“You killed Daniel.”
Elias looked at her.
“No.”
“You ordered Richard to.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Elias smiled.
“Your obsession with murder has distracted you from the real crime.”
“What crime?”
“Ownership.”
He walked closer.
“Your grandfather built a system designed to survive every one of us.”
He pointed toward the ledger.
“You think that book is dangerous because it exposes fraud.”
“Isn't it?”
“It exposes something far more important.”
“What?”
“Who actually owns the city.”
I stared at him.
He explained.
“Your grandfather created layered ownership structures decades ago.”
“Why?”
“To prevent hostile takeovers.”
“And?”
“Over time, those structures accumulated properties.”
Thousands.
Commercial districts.
Industrial land.
Residential towers.
Development rights.
Transit corridors.
Utility easements.
The city kept growing.
So did the network.
“And the trust?”
He smiled.
“The trust controls the central entity.”
I understood.
“The city doesn't know.”
“No.”
“And Falcon Ridge?”
“Was created to manage it.”
“And Victor?”
“Was impatient.”
“My father?”
“Greedy.”
“Tyler?”
“Useful.”
I glanced at Elena.
“And us?”
He smiled.
“Necessary.”
I hated how calm he was.
“Why didn't you just take it?”
“Because your grandfather designed a lock.”
“The two-beneficiary rule.”
“Yes.”
“Then kill Elena and force me?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“That would destroy the structure.”
“Then what?”
“Convince you.”
I stared.
“You've spent years trying to scare me.”
“I spent years trying to make you desperate enough to agree.”
“And now?”
“Now you have seen what your family becomes without control.”
I laughed.
“Your plan failed.”
Elias looked almost amused.
“Did it?”
My phone buzzed.
A notification.
Falcon Ridge emergency announcement.
The board had voted to suspend me.
I stared at the screen.
Then another.
SEC investigation expanded.
Then:
Sterling Heights financing revoked.
I looked at Elias.
“You planned this.”
“Of course.”
“You're collapsing Falcon Ridge.”
“No.”
He corrected me.
“I'm collapsing the parts you can see.”
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
“The underground network has already transferred control.”
“To whom?”
He smiled.
“Me.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You said we were necessary.”
“You are.”
“For what?”
“Validation.”
He placed two papers on the table.
“Sign.”
I laughed.
“Again?”
“These are not transfer documents.”
I read them.
They were beneficiary declarations.
Legal recognition.
If I signed, Elena would be recognized.
If Elena signed, I would be recognized.
Together, the system would become fully activated.
But the final beneficiary was not me.
Not Elena.
Elias.
I looked at the final clause.
Control reverted to the founding family.
The founding family.
Elias.
“You built a trap.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Your grandfather did.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Read the original charter.”
Samantha moved beside me.
“He's lying.”
“Am I?”
Elias looked at her.
“Your father never wanted you to know that Daniel agreed to the contingency.”
“What contingency?”
Elias looked at me.
“If both heirs rejected the trust, control reverted to the founding family.”
I read the clause.
It was real.
But there was a second sentence.
Unless either beneficiary activates the independent control provision.
I looked up.
“And what is that?”
Elias's smile disappeared.
He knew.
I turned toward Elena.
“Do you trust me?”
She looked at me.
“Yes.”
I held out the ledger.
“Then we're going to burn the whole system down.”
Elias took one step back.
“You wouldn't.”
“I would.”
“You'd destroy your own inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“But your grandfather built it for you.”
“He built it so I could choose.”
I reached for my phone.
Samantha understood first.
“You’re going public.”
“Everything.”
Elias's face hardened.
“No.”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
I opened the encrypted disclosure protocol.
One button.
All records.
All names.
All accounts.
All ownership chains.
The screen asked:
FINAL RELEASE?
I pressed YES.
Elias lunged.
A gunshot rang out.
Elena screamed.
I looked down.
Blood stained my shirt.
For one terrible second, I thought it was mine.
Then I realized the blood was on my sleeve.
The bullet had struck Samantha.
She collapsed.
Elias stared at her.
Not with anger.
With fear.
Because the disclosure had already begun.
And the final message appeared on my phone.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Then another notification.
Millions of files sent.
But the last line was the one that made my blood freeze.
SOURCE OF ORIGINAL FUNDS:
UNKNOWN.
Elias looked at me.
May you like
For the first time, he looked terrified.
“You have no idea what you've just exposed.”
