Chapter 8 - The Heir Nobody Mentioned

The Secret Buried Before I Was Born
The silence that followed felt endless.
“Another heir?”
Victor's voice returned.
“Your family has always been very good at hiding inconvenient people.”
“Who?”
“You.”
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“You were not your grandfather's only beneficiary.”
Tyler looked at me.
“That's impossible.”
Victor laughed.
“You don't know the half of it.”
A monitor above the steel door turned on.
A nursery appeared.
A young woman sat beside a crib.
I stared.
I didn't recognize her.
Victor spoke again.
“Her name is Elena.”
The woman looked toward the camera.
“She was born twelve years before you.”
My stomach tightened.
“She is your grandfather's daughter.”
I couldn't speak.
Tyler whispered, “Morgan.”
Victor continued.
“She was erased from the family records.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandmother couldn't accept her.”
“That doesn't explain anything.”
“It explains everything.”
He showed another image.
A birth certificate.
Mother: unknown.
Father: Daniel Hayes.
My grandfather.
I stared.
My grandfather had another daughter.
And she had a child.
The baby in the crib.
My blood relative.
Victor had been hiding them.
“Why?”
“Because Elena inherited nothing.”
I frowned.
“What does she have to do with the trust?”
“Everything.”
He displayed a legal document.
An amendment.
A handwritten note.
The original trust recognized two beneficiaries.
Morgan Hayes.
Elena Hayes.
My grandfather's final amendment removed Elena.
I felt sick.
“Who removed her?”
Victor smiled.
“Your father.”
My mother appeared on another screen.
She looked exhausted.
“Morgan, come home.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“You knew.”
She looked away.
“You knew about Elena.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Tyler was working with Dad.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I knew some of it.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Dad?”
“Of everyone.”
I shook my head.
“You let me believe I was worthless.”
She flinched.
“You were never worthless.”
“You made sure I thought I was.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
I walked toward the screen.
“You told everyone I was lucky to have a small job.”
Her voice broke.
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“My husband.”
I froze.
She whispered:
“Your father has killed before.”
Tyler closed his eyes.
The screen went black.
A door opened.
Victor's security officer appeared.
“You have ten minutes.”
I looked at Tyler.
“What did she mean?”
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“I know your father arranged things.”
“Things like what?”
“Disappearances.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“People who got close to the truth.”
We moved through the tunnel.
Tyler found a hidden access panel.
“Here.”
We opened it.
Inside was a narrow stairway.
It led downward.
Far below the city.
At the bottom was a vault.
Steel.
Ancient.
My grandfather's initials were engraved into the lock.
D.H.
Jenna whispered, “This is real.”
I touched the metal.
A keypad appeared.
I entered my grandfather's birthday.
Wrong.
Elena's?
Wrong.
My mother's?
Wrong.
Tyler looked at me.
“Maybe it's not a date.”
“What then?”
“Something he told you.”
I remembered the stories.
Every building had two values.
The price someone paid.
The price it would become when someone understood it.
I typed:
VALUE.
The lock opened.
Inside were shelves of documents.
Thousands.
Property deeds.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Contracts.
And one sealed envelope.
Morgan.
Open this last.
I opened everything else first.
The documents showed the scale.
My grandfather hadn't built a real estate company.
He had built a network.
And Falcon Ridge had been born inside it.
My father had spent years trying to control it.
Victor had spent years trying to destroy the evidence.
Tyler had been caught between them.
I opened the final envelope.
A letter.
Morgan,
You will eventually discover Elena.
When you do, understand this.
She is not your enemy.
Your father convinced the family that there could be only one heir.
He was wrong.
I left the controlling rights divided equally.
But I created a condition.
The shares could only be activated by both beneficiaries.
I stared at the page.
Both.
Morgan.
Elena.
That explained everything.
Without Elena, they could never fully control the network.
So they needed me.
And somehow, they needed her too.
The vault lights suddenly went out.
Jenna grabbed my arm.
Someone whispered from the darkness.
“Morgan?”
I knew the voice.
Claire.
I turned.
My sister stepped into the dim emergency light.
Her face was bruised.
May you like
But she was holding a gun.
And it was aimed directly at me.
