Chapter 14 - The Blackwoods had been erased from history. That was the only explanation.

My mother spent six hours telling investigators everything.

The original Sterling empire hadn't belonged entirely to my family.

Half had belonged to the Blackwoods.

A business partnership turned into betrayal.

The Blackwoods lost ships.

Land.

Bank accounts.

Political influence.

Then people.

My grandfather had rewritten records.

Buried lawsuits.

Bought officials.

Changed ownership structures.

And the final Blackwood heir vanished.

Or so everyone believed.

My mother looked at my daughter.

“She was the last heir.”

I stared.

“My daughter?”

“Yes.”

“How could she be?”

“Because your grandmother had another child.”

My father had never told me.

My grandfather had never told anyone.

The child had been raised under another surname.

Blackwood.

Then married into the Vale family.

And eventually, through my mother, the bloodline came back to me.

I looked at my baby.

“So she inherits everything.”

My mother nodded.

“Everything that was stolen.”

“That means Sterling…”

“May not belong to us anymore.”

The next morning, the board held an emergency meeting.

My father appeared by video from federal custody.

His lawyers advised him not to speak.

He ignored them.

“I resign.”

Silence.

The board members stared.

“My family built Sterling,” he said.

Then he looked toward the camera.

“My family also destroyed lives to keep it.”

No one moved.

He signed the resignation papers.

All corporate authority transferred into an independent court trust.

My mother surrendered her claim.

Holloway was arrested at the airport.

Brenna was captured two days later trying to cross the border.

Diego confessed.

Not everything.

But enough.

He admitted the documents.

The manipulation.

The financial transfers.

The coordination with Holloway.

He also admitted one thing that surprised everyone.

He had known about Matteo.

He had helped hide him.

But he had never known Matteo was behind the attack.

That detail mattered.

Because the final target was no longer Diego.

It was Matteo.

He was charged with kidnapping.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Attempted murder.

Identity theft.

And the attempted seizure of an unborn child's inheritance.

The trial would last months.

But the real shock came three weeks later.

I received a letter.

No return address.

No fingerprint.

Only six words.

Your father never told you everything.

Inside was a photograph.

My grandfather.

My mother.

Matteo.

Vanessa.

And one more person.

A man I'd never met.

Standing behind them.

My father looked at the photograph.

Then went completely white.

“You know him?”

He nodded.

“Who?”

My father whispered:

“Blackwood.”

I stared.

“But you said the Blackwood family was gone.”

“They were.”

“Then who is this?”

He closed his eyes.

“His name is Julian Blackwood.”

“And?”

“He was your grandfather's partner.”

I looked at my daughter.

“Is he alive?”

My father didn't answer.

That frightened me.

The next day, an attorney arrived at my house.

He placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“Your daughter is the sole beneficiary of the Blackwood recovery trust.”

I signed nothing.

“What does the trust control?”

He opened a file.

Ships.

Ports.

Banks.

Hotels.

Energy companies.

Property.

Technology patents.

A fortune far larger than Sterling.

I stared.

“How much?”

He gave me the number.

I couldn't speak.

My daughter had just inherited an empire larger than the one my family had fought over for decades.

But there was one condition.

“What condition?”

The lawyer pointed to the final page.

“Your daughter cannot access the trust until she turns twenty-five.”

“That makes sense.”

“There is one exception.”

“What?”

“A maternal trustee may access emergency funds.”

“Who is the trustee?”

He looked at me.

“You.”

I froze.

Then I remembered the last message.

Your father never told you everything.

Maybe he hadn't.

Maybe none of them had.

The lawyer closed the folder.

“Mrs. Calder…”

“Yes?”

“There is also a letter from the Blackwood heir.”

“Where?”

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

I know who ordered the real attack.

My blood froze.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at my father's empty chair.

Because Diego had attacked me.

Matteo had manipulated the system.

My mother had returned for revenge.

My father had hidden the truth.

But someone had ordered all of it.

Someone who had never stepped into the light.

May you like

And whoever that person was…

Had just told me they were still watching.
