Chapter 12 - We arrived at the house just before dawn. The police surrounded the property.

My father wanted me nowhere near it.
I refused.
“This is my mother.”
“It may also be a trap.”
“It already is.”
He stared at me.
Then nodded.
The front door opened by itself.
No one touched it.
Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.
Photographs covered the walls.
My childhood.
My mother holding me.
My father smiling beside us.
A life that had existed before someone destroyed it.
Then I saw a photograph that stopped me.
My mother.
Diego.
Matteo.
Brenna.
Holloway.
All together.
At a dinner table.
The date was twenty-four years earlier.
I looked at my father.
“You knew.”
He stared at the photograph.
“I knew some of them.”
“No.”
I pointed.
“All of them.”
He looked devastated.
“We were young.”
“You were adults.”
“We believed we could control the consequences.”
“You ruined everything.”
A voice came from upstairs.
“Your father always did.”
My mother.
I ran toward the stairs.
My father grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
She stepped into the hallway.
For the first time, I saw her in person.
She looked older.
But undeniably mine.
Same eyes.
Same hands.
Same smile.
I started crying.
She did too.
“Hello, Elena.”
“Why did you leave me?”
She shook her head.
“I didn't.”
“My father said…”
“He lied.”
I looked at my father.
“You took me.”
He didn't deny it.
My mother came down the stairs.
“He told you I was dangerous.”
“Were you?”
She looked at me.
“Yes.”
That answer surprised me.
“Then why?”
“Because I was fighting people more dangerous than me.”
She glanced at the walls.
“Your grandfather built an empire on stolen money.”
My father protested.
“That isn't true.”
“He laundered funds through shipping routes.”
“Prove it.”
She smiled.
“I did.”
She opened a hidden compartment.
Inside were ledgers.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Dates.
Bribes.
Payments.
Everything.
My father's face went pale.
“These are originals.”
“Yes.”
My mother looked at me.
“You want to know why everyone wants your daughter?”
I nodded.
“She is the first heir born after the trust's final amendment.”
“What does that mean?”
“She inherits the assets your grandfather tried to hide.”
My father whispered,
“I never told her.”
“You were afraid she would hate you.”
I looked at him.
“I already do.”
He lowered his eyes.
My mother continued.
“The child isn't just wealthy.”
“What is she?”
“The legal bridge between two family trusts.”
“Sterling and Vale?”
“Yes.”
“That means…”
“Whoever controls her trust controls both.”
The truth hit me.
My daughter was the merger.
Not just of money.
Of two rival families.
Two bloodlines.
Two empires.
Then a gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
Police shouted.
Chaos exploded.
I felt a hand grab my arm.
Matteo.
He had appeared behind me.
“You're coming with me.”
I screamed.
My father fired.
Matteo dragged me through a side door.
We ran into the woods.
Branches tore at my clothes.
My pregnancy made every movement painful.
“Let me go!”
“You don't understand.”
“Neither did Diego.”
Matteo stopped.
“You think Diego was the worst person in this story?”
He looked at me.
“No.”
“Your father is.”
I stared.
“What did he do?”
“He killed my father.”
My breath stopped.
“Your father died in prison.”
“Because Alvin Sterling framed him.”
I didn't know what to believe.
Matteo pulled out a phone.
A recording played.
My father's voice.
Twenty-three years earlier.
“Put him in prison.”
Another voice asked,
“And the wife?”
My father's voice:
“Disappear her.”
I froze.
My mother.
She had been hunted.
My father had ordered it.
Then Matteo whispered,
“Your father created the monster.”
Suddenly another voice came through the phone.
My mother.
“Enough.”
She stood behind us.
Her gun was raised.
She looked at Matteo.
“Let her go.”
Matteo smiled.
“You still protect her.”
“She is my daughter.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“She is the key.”
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small detonator.
My mother froze.
“What did you do?”
“Put charges around the house.”
My heart stopped.
He smiled.
“Now we find out which parent loves Elena more.”
His thumb moved toward the button.
Then my father's voice came from behind him.
“Do it.”
Everyone froze.
My father stepped into view.
He wasn't afraid.
He looked directly at Matteo.
“You want the truth?”
Matteo lowered the detonator slightly.
“My entire company.”
“Not enough.”
“My estate.”
“Not enough.”
“My life.”
Matteo smiled.
“There.”
My father nodded.
“Take mine.”
My mother stared at him.
“Alvin…”
He looked at her.
“I should have told you the truth twenty-three years ago.”
Then he looked at me.
“And I should have told our daughter.”
Matteo raised the detonator.
“Then confess.”
My father inhaled.
And spoke the first sentence of the confession that could destroy Sterling forever.
“I ordered the attack that made Isabella Vale disappear.”
My mother's eyes widened.
Then Matteo's thumb stopped.
Because none of them had noticed one thing.
May you like
Detective Harris was standing behind them.
Recording everything.
