Chapter 13 - The confession went live twelve minutes later.Detective Harris had streamed it directly to the court.

The board.

The police.

Federal prosecutors.

The entire world.

My father had no idea.

Neither did Matteo.

He had thought he was holding a dead man's secret.

Instead, he had broadcast the confession of the most powerful man in the country.

By sunrise, Sterling was under investigation.

Banks froze accounts.

Government agents arrived.

Every financial record was subpoenaed.

My mother surrendered willingly.

Matteo disappeared.

Diego remained in custody.

Brenna fled.

And I?

I went into labor.

At 4:52 a.m.

The contractions began suddenly.

My daughter was coming early.

I was terrified.

My father was gone.

My mother was in police custody.

Diego was in jail.

And the world outside my hospital room was collapsing.

Then the lights flickered.

I knew immediately.

Matteo.

The power failed.

Security rushed in.

The emergency backup system activated.

The fetal monitor beeped.

My daughter was in distress.

I screamed.

“Get the doctor!”

A nurse ran toward me.

Then every monitor in the room turned on.

Matteo's face appeared.

“Hello, Elena.”

I closed my eyes.

“Not now.”

“You're almost there.”

“Leave me alone.”

“You're carrying the thing I need.”

“You won't get her.”

He smiled.

“Maybe not.”

A pause.

“Maybe I only need you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“The trust recognizes maternal authorization.”

I didn't understand.

“What are you talking about?”

“Your daughter cannot inherit until you authenticate the final transfer.”

My stomach turned.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

He showed me a document.

The same document Diego had tried to make me sign.

But this time, there was a final page.

A page I had never seen.

At the bottom was a biometric signature.

Mine.

My medical bracelet.

He had cloned it.

He could authenticate the transfer without me.

Unless the system required live consent.

It did.

He needed me awake.

Which meant the attack had never really been about killing me.

It had been about getting me to the point where I was vulnerable enough to sign.

The freezing water.

The hospital.

The guardianship.

Every step had led here.

I suddenly understood.

He wanted me alive.

Until the moment I signed.

Then he could kill me.

The baby's heartbeat slowed.

I looked at the screen.

“No.”

I ripped the bracelet from my wrist.

The monitor beeped.

Matteo shouted,

“What are you doing?”

“You're not getting anything.”

He panicked.

“You can't!”

I dropped the bracelet to the floor.

A nurse picked it up.

The device automatically locked.

Matteo lost access.

The screen went black.

For the first time, I heard fear in his voice.

“No.”

Then silence.

The doctors rushed in.

“Push!”

I screamed.

Another contraction.

Then another.

My entire world narrowed to one point.

My daughter.

Minutes later, I heard it.

A cry.

Tiny.

Furious.

Alive.

I started sobbing.

The doctor placed her against my chest.

My daughter opened her eyes.

Dark blue.

Just like mine.

I whispered,

“Hi.”

She moved her fingers.

I kissed them.

Then the door exploded open.

Police rushed inside.

Detective Harris entered.

“We found Matteo.”

I barely looked at her.

“Where?”

“He tried to leave through the old underground tunnel.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Your father?”

“He's in custody.”

“My mother?”

“Also in custody.”

I looked down at my daughter.

Everything was over.

Or so I thought.

Detective Harris hesitated.

“There is one more thing.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“We searched the trust records.”

“And?”

“The final beneficiary isn't your daughter.”

My heart stopped.

“Then who?”

Detective Harris looked at the newborn in my arms.

“It identifies the beneficiary as…”

She stopped.

“Mrs. Calder, your daughter has been registered under another surname.”

“What surname?”

She handed me the document.

I read it.

And froze.

The beneficiary wasn't listed as Calder.

Or Sterling.

Or Vale.

It listed a name I had never heard.

Elena Isabella Blackwood.

I stared.

“Who is Blackwood?”

Detective Harris looked at me.

“We don't know.”

Then my mother appeared in the doorway, escorted by two officers.

She saw the document in my hand.

Her face drained of color.

“No.”

“What?”

She looked at my baby.

Then at me.

“That name…”

“What does it mean?”

May you like

My mother whispered:

“Blackwood is the family your grandfather stole Sterling from.”
