Chapter 9 - THE STORAGE UNITThe storage facility sat on the edge of the city.

Old.

Half empty.

Rows of identical metal doors.

Unit 17 was at the very end.

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Old accounting books.

And one metal filing cabinet.

Bella whispered:

“This looks like a crime scene.”

Elena nodded.

“Your father prepared this before he died.”

We started searching.

The first box contained business records.

The second contained property deeds.

The third contained photographs.

One photo showed Dad.

Mom.

David Mercer.

And a baby.

Josh.

I stared at it.

On the back, Dad had written:

THE TRUTH ALWAYS SURVIVES THE LIE.

I opened the next box.

Hospital records.

DNA tests.

Court papers.

Then a police report.

DAVID MERCER — DECEASED

Date:

Six years ago.

Cause of death:

Vehicle accident.

But the report had been amended.

Twice.

The original report was missing several pages.

Elena's face hardened.

“This is it.”

She pointed at a page.

A witness had reported seeing David arguing with Mom the night he died.

Another witness had identified Josh's car nearby.

I looked at her.

“Josh killed him?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She shook her head.

“We don't know.”

I found a photograph.

David's car.

Crushed against a barrier.

The brakes had failed.

I turned the photo over.

A handwritten note.

BRAKE LINE CUT.

Bella swallowed.

“Someone sabotaged the car.”

I looked at Elena.

“Who had access?”

“Your family.”

Then something in the cabinet caught my eye.

A small cassette recorder.

Old-fashioned.

I pressed play.

Static.

Then my father's voice.

“If you're hearing this, I wasn't wrong.”

I froze.

His voice continued.

“David knew about the company.”

Pause.

“He threatened to take Josh.”

Another pause.

“Your mother panicked.”

I stared at the recorder.

Dad took a breath.

“She met David the night he died.”

Bella looked horrified.

I leaned closer.

“What happened?”

Dad's voice cracked.

“I arrived too late.”

Silence.

Then:

“He was already dead.”

The tape stopped.

I rewound it.

Played it again.

The same words.

“She met David the night he died.”

Not:

She killed David.

Not:

Mom killed David.

But close enough to make my stomach turn.

I looked through the remaining boxes.

Another tape.

Another recording.

This one was longer.

Mom's voice.

She sounded younger.

Angrier.

“You think you can take my son from me?”

David replied:

“He isn't your son.”

Mom:

“He is mine.”

David:

“He belongs with his father.”

Mom:

“You don't deserve him.”

Then Dad's voice appeared.

“Stop.”

Silence.

Then a crash.

A scream.

The recording ended.

Bella stepped back.

“Luke…”

I couldn't breathe.

There was one final file in the cabinet.

A sealed envelope.

On it:

OPEN ONLY WHEN LUKE KNOWS THE TRUTH ABOUT JOSH.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Dad standing beside David's car.

And underneath it:

The brakes were repaired two days before the accident.

I looked up.

“That's impossible.”

Elena grabbed the paper.

“What?”

“The car had no mechanical failure.”

“So?”

“So if the brakes were repaired…”

I finished the sentence.

“…someone sabotaged them afterward.”

Then we heard footsteps.

Outside the unit.

Multiple people.

Elena whispered:

“Turn off the lights.”

We did.

Footsteps stopped.

A man's voice echoed through the corridor.

“Unit 17.”

Josh.

I looked at Elena.

“How did he find us?”

She whispered:

“Someone followed us.”

The door handle moved.

Then Josh said:

“Luke.”

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Come out.”

I didn't move.

Then he said:

“I know what Dad wrote in that letter.”

And that was when I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Josh wasn't here for the documents.

He was here because he already knew what was inside.
